Does it mention platform? I hate reading about cool, new games and then it's available on: "The Only System You DON'T Have 4."

Most likely he doesn't have the system required.

Looking at the concept art released so far for both Cook’s tabletop game and inXile’s Torment: Tides of Numenera, the game will feature rich locations and exotic landmarks. One such place is the Bloom, which McComb describes as "a giant brain coral”.

"The Bloom is also a predator that feeds on intelligence or intelligent life. At the same time, it’s unpredictable. It’s an enormous, city-sized thing. People build their homes in there. The reason why is because this thing extends its tendrils through multiple planes. You can cross one of its tendrils and find yourself in a place of pure light, where all matter is transmuted to consciousness. You can find something there and bring it back, and suddenly it becomes a physical thing in your hand. But the problem is, you don’t know at what point the Bloom is going to turn on you and devour you. So the people who live there are all just a little bit crazy. They’re extraordinarily paranoid. They’re also extraordinarily superstitious, because they all have their own little rituals… It’s like a tiger defense rock. Do you see any tigers? No? Well, it must be working.”

Is numenera really Science Fiction? Planes, giant interplaner-brain-coral-that-creates-portal-to-consciousness-realm. That's clearly fantasy in my book.

I mean they cross it with the consciousness realm : soul, pure light, consciousness... Religious Stuff that are supposed to transcend science, I thought this was exclusive to fantasy?

I mean yeah sure, they can say that everything is actually explainable by a word called ''science''... Except this isn't the same ''science'' as actual rational and real life science. Therefore it could also be called ''shablabla'', ''nsfybgyurgbrgbrg'' ,''potato'' , ''force''.... or just ''magic''

Following this logic I can take whatever fantasy book, replace all instance of the word ''m.a.g.i.c'' by ''s.c.i.e.n.c.e'', and tadam! It's now Science Fiction. If the only difference is 7 meaningless letter...

Just in case : I do find it awesome that they are doing it this way. To escape from reality, that is bound by strict universal laws and rationality, is appeasing.

From the IGN interview:
Intended for PC and Mac currently, McComb sites several guiding principles as pillars to the design from its inception, including the integration of narrative elements, meaningful player decisions before combat, meaningful player decisions during “real-time smart combat”, and quality encounters over quantity. “We don’t just want a bunch of trash monsters running up to you and smacking you.”
Is this fix already? :(

It also has sentient moons, robots or nanobots and likely creatures, etc etc. It's not exactly hard science fiction, but it's science fiction in the same way Dark Sun, Dying Earth or Canticle for Liebowitz are.

Is this fix already? :(
Disregard.

akarnir is stupid, news at eleven.

Combat is... “real-time smart combat”?

But what does this mean then:

In terms of something like the combat system, I would say that the more funding we have, the more free we would be to venture away from the foundation that Wasteland 2 provides.

?

They call it science fantasy.

Why bother with Science? There is science in lord of the ring : architecture, mechanical trebuchet, chemical reactions... Is Lotr called a science fantasy?

Why not just Future Fantasy as opposed to Ancient time Fantasy. That's where the difference lies. Not science.

My point is :

The nomenclature could be changed. Just that.

Phew. Well, other than the phrase "real-time smart combat" I liked what I read. The inspiration drawn from TNO and Sigil is pretty obvious, yet the TToN PC and the brain coral still put a unique spin on it.

It was a dumb thing that fell out of my mouth because I was nervous. We haven't finalized a decision on our combat, and we're going to take advice from our backers when we get to that discussion of gameplay.

why is that? Nomenclature issues are always interesting to raise. Well now people here may not agree. But Science was as prevalent back then then as it is today and as it will be in the future. It's just more or less advanced.

Because science fantasy is a term that had been used for decades and millions of people are familiar with. Sorry it doesn't meet your exact specifications.

Pretty sure that slip of the tongue will prove to be true when most backers ask for RTwP.

guys, all those concepts fall into the science fiction.... ffs...

CMcC

Love the info you released. All of it.

Bloom sounds superb.
The setup for our character is great. I thought we are going to be that guy skipping bodies but this is a nice twist surprise.
Three starting classes are just fine. I prefer playing as jack of all trades anyway. Will be looking at that especially.
Descriptors and focus sound great.

Dialogue... will we be able to perform actions through dialogue too?

I suspect NPCs will be appropriately strange, wacky and subversie as original ones?

Also, can we get that full Bloom wallpaper too?

Would most people here prefer RTwP? Personally i would love to see turned base combat but i doubt they will bother with the amount of work needed to pull it off in a half decent manner.

Our dialogues are going to be very similar to those in Torment. We'll update as necessary, but as Kevin said, we're not looking to build the entire structure anew. So yes, we certainly anticipate being able to perform actions through dialogue.

NPCs should be just as strange.

And I'll check to see if we can get the Bloom as wallpaper. We've got some more images that we might put out as well -- but I can't make any promises right now, because this stuff might be intended for backers only.

I liked the concept from the start. If i cant get Sigil (for now...) Bloom will do just fine.

Ok then, are humans dependant on external technology to be powerful? Or can some rely on an inner source of energy to fight? By inner I just that you use it with your will/knowledge alone.
Call it the force, Jesus or Magic, but something spontaneous that don't require external device (or DNA modification or whatever). Short : Are there ''mage'' or just ''technologist''?
