It feels like a test case for releasing B budget games in the Christmas window. If it flops they won't release PoE2 in this window, if it succeeds they'll consider it. Unfortunately it really, really needs to succeed for the sake of the genre, publishers backing isometric and other niche genres of game is actually a really good thing for consumers, otherwise we're reliant on Kickstartering shit to get the games we actually want, and Derek Smart and Might no9 have sucked the faith outta that platform.

If it flops

We should define what "flops" means before the launch. What kind of sales numbers might Obsidian be expecting here? 100k in the first month? 150k? If those are their targets, I expect they'll underperform.

Did you mean Steam only or GOG combined?

It seams to me that sales on Steam are generally quite lower than couple of years before. Don't know what is affecting it.
Crisis, inflation, brexit, or niche RPG title, more indie titles, no new groundbreaking good games... ?

I'd call a flop sub 400k honestly. 400k-500k I reckon they'll see it as "genre is fine, can consistently pitch at the 600k mark like Pillars of Eternity, just don't fucking release it at Christmas. Isometric games are a good call overall becauyse they pay their development costs and this thing will give us an unbelievable amount of residuals on Steam when we sell the game of the year edition for 20 dollars 15 years down the track and get strong residual sales like Morrowind does"

600k plus will be "huh maybe Christmas isn't such a bad idea,"

I just got an offer for a Tyranny review code in my inbox. Life is full of strange marvels.

I meant only Steam, since sales numbers for GOG titles are still shrouded in mystery. If they get past 150k on Steamspy before December, I'll be surprised; I wish I knew why, but it's hard to deny that non-sequel RPGs have been having a dismal time on the market lately. Masquerada had one of the most horrible releases in history, Dragonspear is barely even remembered anymore, and Mankind Divided was met with a surprising amount of indifference in spite of its massive hype campaign. Maybe the market is just tired out.

any news when the embargo lifts?

posted on the previous page:

- Review embargo is set for 6am Pacific Time / 2pm GMT on Thursday, November 10th.
This embargo holds for any content that is a formal review and includes a rating or score of the game, including articles and videos.

- Let's Play/streaming embargo is set for 6am PT / 2pm GMT on Tuesday, November 8th.

Yes, you can record or stream content ahead of launch! However, for Let's Play videos and streams there are certain conditions:
Once you reach
Vendrien's Well Citadel and finish the battle in Ascension Hall
, you may not stream or publish video content beyond that section. You will know you have reached this point because there will be a rather significant event involving a
pillar of light.

Once the game has launched on November 10th, you may feel free to stream or publish video from any portion of the game.
This is a story driven game; we kindly ask that you post/mention a spoiler warning at the beginning of any video you create or have "Spoilers" listed in the title for your Twitch stream.

Let's play/streaming embargo lifted tomorrow, reviews on thursday. I'll probably post some impressions here tomorrow. Perhaps some screenshots if people want them, but the beginning is better explained with a video.

EDIT:
Actually, nevermind. They've already released a video showing the first hour:

No, it's a conversation between two NPC (according to the tweets that followed that quote).

"Shivershank" is just such a typical Tyranny name.

Fuckwit is slang that dates back to the 1970s at the earliest, so if you're annoyed by that kind of thing in a "bronze age-inspired" setting, well

That's just how people talked in the Bronze Age. Vulgar nicknames are a huge part of the Epic of Gilgamesh, Iliad, Ramayana, etc. Enkidu calls Humbaba "The One Whose Mind Fornicates Like a He-Goat," for example, and then they just laugh it off while fighting off Egyptian chariot-hoplites and singing Nessun Dorma.

Why wouldn't it go to the person who wrote the PoE review the Codex Editorial Staff was finally satisfied with after multiple flawed attempts?

It's so strange to me that they decided to release this on Thursday instead of Tuesday. Almost all major releases come out on Mondays or Tuesday. If I remember correctly, I think they even released Stellaris on a Tuesday. So why prolong it to later in the week?

I guess it's because they're still updating the game.
