v080425 - Playing as idiot Gnome

* In Tarant, after you've retrieved Virgil's telegram and Virgil paraphrases the contents of the letter stating that the Elder believes it to be more Important to find out who the group is that is trying to kill you than staying protected in Tarant, the idiot PC has the reply of "(4) You protect me Virgil!" to which Virgil responds with "It is blast it!... (and other comments that don't make sense with what the PC has just said)".

* Tarant's Armorer's won't buy the "Barbarian Clothes" armor piece. However the Shrouded Hill's armorer will. Considering the stats on the piece compared to the stats the other armors the vendors in Tarant sell you'd think that at least the Dwarf armor merchant would buy it.

It's actually a quality smith, real dwarven ones are in Wheel Clan and Caladon, and the smith in Shrouded Hills is a rural one (all 3 use different item lists). Anyway, I'll add both non-magick pieces of barbarian armor to quality smiths' buy list.

The dialogue goes like this:
{2}{I thought that was your job, Virgil...}{}{5}{}{6}{}
{3}{I don't need protection...}{}{5}{}{32}{}
{4}{You protect me, Virgil!}{}{-4}{}{6}{}
{6}{It is, blast it! I'm sorry...I don't mean to get so angry...<omitted>
As you can see, both PC lines 2 and 4 lead to NPC line 6, but line 4 doesn't make any sense in this context. What should I change it to? Any suggestions?

DoH!

Hey Drog maybe you already know but a terra-arcanum member called jfkoski did some interesting things in the past. I might be usefull for you.

Here are a few topic that might be concider as bugs:
http://terra-arcanum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=14165&highlight=

http://terra-arcanum.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=14100&highlight=

There might be more useful topics over TA. Check them out, maybe there is something you can implant in your patch

It seems that as an idiot, lines 2 and 3 don't show (at least in my playthrough). I goes straight from Virgil's paraphrase of the telegram to 4 and then 6.

Oh, sorry for not explaining it properly. Lines 2 and 3 are for characters with at least 5 of IN. Line 4 is only for characters who have 4 or lower IN.

I've had arcanum sitting on my computer for about 2 years now and the first time through, I only got to Tarant and got bored. Your patch has inspired me to retry the game and I'm already farther than I've been before. Anyway, I'm playing a half-orc that gets suspicious reactions from everyone with the 4/20 patch, so far I havn't encountered anything noticeably broken except a few typos and other minor stuff:

1. In the Gentleman's club in Tarant, I can talk to Gurin Rockharrow with "How about a game of dice" followed by "I appreciate your frankness (+5 reaction)" repeatedly until my reaction with him increased to 81

2. When I talk to any Tarant Officer and ask "Where is P. Schuyler and Sons located?", the last response doesn't make sense. I think it should be "Goodbye" or "Thanks", but instead it shows up as "No".

3. Benjamin Gershwin at 24 University Court in Tarant has a line that is "Well, every man his hobbies. I leave you to yours..." It's definitely missing a word between "every man" and "his hobbies", perhaps "every man <has> his hobbies..."?

4. Typo in Aldous T. Buxington's (24 University Court in Tarant) line, "Each of the races had certain gods that they prayed too, and those..."

5. Even after completing the taxes quest for King Praetus and getting the taxes from the mayor of Blackroot, when I talk to the mayor, I can do line [5] (looking for apprentice training), then say "I changed my mind", and line [23] (have you considered giving me the taxes, perhaps) still shows up.

6. When talking to the beggar in Tarant (this may be true of all beggars though), saying [3] (sorry, no coin) results in -2 reaction and triggers for another option to give him wine if you have any, but if you give him the wine, his reaction doesn't change. Just giving him coin to start with doesn't change his reaction either.

7. How come when Magic Robes and Magic Chainmail are both in Virgil's inventory, Virgil chooses to equip the Magic Robes instead of the Chainmail even though the Chainmail provides much better protection? Also, what does the MSR (minimum strength req) of weapons do for followers? For example, Magnus seems to prefer equipping and using the broadsword he shouldn't be able to use over the quality axe that only does slightly less damage but doesn't violate the MSR.

Ah I see, that makes sense now.
If you would be so kind, could you post the all of lines 1 and 6. If we see them in full we can probably come up with a good idiot response that'll match up a lot better.

Yes, of course.

Actually, many dialogues in the game have this kind of asskissing until reaction goes up. I don't think it needs to be "fixed".

You can do nothing to increase his reaction. Again, I think it was meant this way.

Autoequipping system is pretty stupid and nothing can be done about it, I'm afraid. And considering the MSR penalty, falling below the MSR increases the chance of a crit miss as far as I know.

the Amulet of Leadership is missing from the game. Maybe not a bug but worth mentioning?

Oh, well I quess the easiest way to fix that would be to replace 4 with a dumb version of 2. Thus a "Innit ur job, Virgin?" should suffice. Unless someone wants to write something better? :P

EDIT: I've also added a cheat menu to Virgil's dialogue for testing the game. It marks all locations on the map, gives you mastery in any skill, gives you 5 fate points and 51000 XP. Create a "dlg" folder inside your Arcanum\data folder and put the file there. The cheat menu is available from Virgil's questions branch.

Drog, I was checking this out and spotted something.
Line 1013, the fate point results need commas.
Looks good otherwise!

- Fatique DOT of "Boots of the Dark Toll" is too severe.
- Half-ogre bandit in Caladon's sewers is resurrectable.
- Leftmost Advisory Board Member (master persuasion quest) is missing description.
edit:
- Terms of Agreement Advisory Board Chairman holds aren't readable. And yours are missing proper description.
- Khergan's, Thorvald's and Kraka-tur's journals are missing description.

also, repost from drama thread:

I might make a version of my patch with cd check intact or add a patcher program so it will patch any .exe file.
I prefer second option because there's possibility that you will restore cd-check one day.

Given that I'm working from an unpacked hack -
Someone want to test that new Virgil dialog and see if they get five fate points?

Thanks in advance.

What the hell? I said they work and you don't believe me? I test everything before uploading it, you know.

One or two more - sorry if already posted:
This is from the latest release.

You have the option to say you don't think highly of him even if you've never heard of Garrick.

If you don't accept P. Toone's quest first time (I wandered down the why is your mother crying in the mine option - where is your sister path) all either of them say to you is Farewell or hello. There's no way to restore the mine since Stanton doesn't show up until Sarah tells you about him.

Probably intentional but there's a baleful hound south of Payne's house in Blackroot. I thoughI saw a daragon there too but can't find it now.

I only got one fate point and that's what led me to take a closer look.

I'm working from an unpacked hack, which makes it twichy. If it's my hack refusing to work without every comma in place - Great! I know how to correct that.

But I would like to know for certain one way or the other.

Do you use the same version of the game? Seems really strange.

Anyone else having problems with this little mod? It works for me and thus should work for everyone else, really.

There are lots of things like that in the game. For example, you can tell Maximillian that you've been to Cumbria before even if you don't have Dernholm marked on your map.

I'll look into it.

There are all kinds of monsters lurking around Blackroot. They're apparently coming from the portal.

I'm using the American release of Arcanum patched with the 1.0.7.4_EN.
The A:WIP mod sits on top of that.

Well, it must work. I won't believe that the dialogue scripting language is dependent on whether your files are packed or not. Try downloading and testing the file again. You must be mistaken.

OK - Fresh download - test with Tumblebrook and Muck - one fate point. Exit game.
Swap dialog with corrected copy and start again. Test with Tumblebrook and Muck - five fate points.

Drog, this isn't the first time I've had to tweak something to make it work with A:WIP, and I'm positive it won't be the last. So unless someone reports the same thing happening with their stock game - don't worry about.

Maybe just a bit more smarter line, so it blends with Troika's style?

I suspect there's a particular halfling that hangs out between the sundries store and Geoffrey Talrond-Ashe that attacks the party on sight. He attacked me before I'd had a chance to do anything to upset him this time (except for having an ugly char - though the smoking jacket and 2 purity of water spells should have dealt with it.)
Finally found out what's up with that. That specific halfling (and also a half elf woman who lives near the cemetery) are members of Clan Maug, so if you're an enemy of Clan Maug, they will attack you on sight.

I'm not sure if it was meant this way though.

From what I've experienced in Arcanum as playing a dumb character, there are lots of responses from the PC almost exactly like that. Oh well, I can't think of anything "dumb" that would be better/"smarter". Someone else can take a crack at it :P

No, they're not. But they give me 30 reaction, not 50 like other animals. There may be another problem with them, but I'm not sure what it is.
They give me 0 reaction while other animals 15 or 25.
Found out what's up with those cows as well. Actually, there's a problem with the Pervert of Tarant reputation, it was supposed to give -5 reaction to everybody in Arcanum and extra -25 to everybody from origin #21 (Tarant), but it gives -25 to everybody from faction #21 (Monsters Set 3), and those cows belong to that faction. Now I fixed the reputation and the cows are peaceful, but it's damn terrible to be a master pickpocket now.
