I have been playing through this incredible game. I love all the modes, I beat them all and it has unlocked a final new mode. Every mission was on its own map!!! And only now do I find that this final mode is a bunch of new maps that I love the most. Very fun maps and I like the more deathmatch focused rounds. The Skyscrapers level has been in my mind for 20 years. I don't know why I waited this long to play it again. I guess because it does feel shallower playing it against bots. The AI is amazing, but I played this against real people back in the day and it was the best thing I'd ever played.

This game is so good from start to end. It keeps getting better the more you play it. It unlocks better and better maps. It also feels amazing to play. I love that you can blast enemies into the sky or across the room with a rocket explosion, kind of like Quake. But in general it is less bouncy and likes accuracy more, rewards headshots a lot. I like how the characters feel attached to the ground, the movement is so good. And yet if you see a character running at full speed they are off the ground like a runner is. I loved Quake but playing this game back in 1999, it felt like the most high tech thing I'd ever experienced. It was so slick. Later games have figured that out too but this was first and it still feels good today. The actual fun of the modes and the maps and the weapons, I don't think any game has ever beaten that yet. There are some fun actiony shooters, but I think this still has the edge. It's so good...

No other game takes me back to being an adolescent as much as UT99!

That bit at 3:26 was the most futuristic sounding shit I'd ever heard in my life back then.

Yeah it's excellent, the best MP shooter ever made. It's not even a contest between UT99 and Q3 honestly.

The multiple fire options for each gun is awesome. And the rocket launcher wooow hold it and you get a spread of rockets. Right click you get grenades instead. Hold both mouse buttons and it fires several rockets in a spiral. Hnnng.

Also at some point, I got to do that down a corridor with a bunch of enemies approaching. MONSTER KILL.

Can you hold two of each weapons if you want, or two different weapons, and if you are very strong you will be able to hold them in a different way that gives you even more attack options? You can do all these things in Dark Souls II.

Just got my ass kicked 1 on 1! I will win now that I know the map. Hell of an AI though.

There's no strength but you can have about a dozen weapons.

ChatGPT make yourself useful:

In Unreal Tournament '99 (UT99), a classic first-person shooter, players have access to a variety of weapons, each with a primary and secondary fire mode. Here’s a list of the main weapons available in the game:

  1. Impact Hammer
    • Primary Fire: Charges up for a powerful melee attack.
    • Secondary Fire: Deflects projectiles and can boost jumps.
  2. Enforcer
    • Primary Fire: Semi-automatic firing.
    • Secondary Fire: Slightly slower, more accurate shots.
    • Note: Players can dual-wield Enforcers if they pick up a second one.
  3. Bio-Rifle
    • Primary Fire: Fires blobs of toxic sludge.
    • Secondary Fire: Charges up to release a large blob that explodes on impact.
  4. Shock Rifle
    • Primary Fire: Fires an instant energy beam.
    • Secondary Fire: Fires a slower-moving energy ball that can be detonated by shooting it with the primary fire, creating a powerful combo explosion.
  5. Pulse Gun
    • Primary Fire: Continuous stream of energy (similar to a laser).
    • Secondary Fire: Fires energy projectiles in a slower, more powerful burst.
  6. Ripper
    • Primary Fire: Fires circular blades that can ricochet off walls.
    • Secondary Fire: Fires non-ricocheting explosive blades.
  7. Minigun
    • Primary Fire: Fast, less accurate bullets.
    • Secondary Fire: Slower, more accurate shots.
  8. Flak Cannon
    • Primary Fire: Fires a spread of shrapnel, like a shotgun.
    • Secondary Fire: Launches a single flak grenade that explodes on impact.
  9. Rocket Launcher
    • Primary Fire: Fires a single rocket.
    • Secondary Fire: Charges up to fire multiple rockets or grenades. Players can also choose to fire the rockets in a spiral or straight pattern.
  10. Sniper Rifle
    • Primary Fire: Single, powerful shot.
    • Secondary Fire: Zooms in for precision aiming.
  11. Redeemer
    • Primary Fire: Launches a slow-moving, controllable nuclear missile that creates a massive explosion.
    • Secondary Fire: Fires a fast-moving, uncontrollable version of the missile.
  12. Translocator
    • Primary Fire: Fires a small disc that can be teleported to.
    • Secondary Fire: Teleports the player to the disc's location.
Each weapon has its own strengths and weaknesses, making the choice of weapon and how it’s used crucial in gameplay.

You can hold two Enforcer pistols and fire them sideways like a jackass if you want to.

I loved UT2004, especially the Onslaught mode. I liked the little fast flying vehicle. Not sure what went wrong with UT3. It was ugly and it was more of the same, it needed to try some new stuff. They seemed more interested in licensing the engine to crappy xbox cover based shooters.

I would agree that its the best game. Definitely my favorite. I love a lot of the mods, mutators and maps too.
AI is great fun, but if you know a map too well, it gets a little predictable.
Instagib on Morpheus is awesome.

UT99 is a cult arena shooter. This game was the main competitor to Quake 3 Arena. We played the shit out of it in LAN dens. It also introduced mutators which are its signature feature.

The big shame is that I think it's not available for legal purchase anywhere.

I liked Q3 as well but I think I played this first and it felt like it was a generation ahead or something. And it wasn't just the amazing tech, it had all of Quake's badass gameplay only arguably better. It really surprised me when I played it, felt like a game from the future. And it's still so much fun to play. The 90s was a hell of a thing...

Any time I feel nostalgic for the 90s I just listen to a 90s radio station and remember it was actually a living hell.

"I KNOW WHO I WANT TO TAKE ME HOME"
"I WANT SOMETHING ELSE TO GET ME THROUGH THIS SEMI-CHARMED KINDA LIFE"
"AND I SAID WHAT ABOUT BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S"
"I'M WIDE AWAKE AND I CAN SEE THE PERFECT SKY IS TORN"

The pain. I also had IBS-D for all of summer 1997 into like February 1998, no idea what the fuck that was about, I was a child but I was dealing with issues that normally affect 80 year old women. UT99 feels more connected to the 2000s to me, didn't it release sometime well into winter? I think we actually bought it sometime in early 2000 and it was still pretty new, that's when we upgraded our computer and internet into something that didn't instantly shit itself in online matches.

I'm more familiar with '03 and '04 but I love both. Q3 is "better" when you're in the zone and doing great, but UT always felt more fun, and less try-hard.

Q3A had the superior sense of speed, perfected after Q1 and Q2, but UT99 had cool weapons and mutators and voice lines.

I wouldn't say "best EVER", but it was definitely up there! Such an amazing game, I still spin up a botmatch every now and then when I wanna unwind for fifteen minutes, it's a permanent fixture on my PC. Played it so much over the years it's... heh... unreal. And yeah, I was in the UT > Q3 camp.

The big shame is that I think it's not available for legal purchase anywhere.
Jesus Christ, I wanted to link you to GOG and it's gone! All of the Unreal games! I still have 'em in my library, but they're no longer up for purchase. Sweeney, you asshole, what the fuck?!

I prefered UT to quake 3, but quake 3 was no slouch. I was lucky to have both games in the early 00's after they dropped in price. I got UT99 GOTY for $7.99 at wal mart probably in 2001 or 2002. I got quake 3 gold for a similarly cheap price shortly after. As well at ut 03/04 again shortly after that.

Real shame what happened to both franchises with quake 4/et quake wars, and unreal 2/ unreal tournament 3.

That's still a million times better than today's crap.
