And things are escalating, reportedly Valve said "we think this novel’s core audience is pedophiles": https://steamcommunity.com/app/710370/discussions/0/1499000547482233373/

“The Key to Home / いえのかぎ” has been deleted from the steam store by valve.

I want to thank you all for your continued support.

It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you all that “The Key to Home”(AppID:710370) has been deleted from the steam store by valve.

Here is basically how everything has transpired so far.

Our game, “The Key to Home” was approved by Valve after passing through their game content reviewing process. Then on Dec 1st, we received an E-mail from Valve asking us to explain the game’s plot and to also specify its intended audience. Wanting to respond to them quickly, we hastily summarized the plot in Japanese and explained to them that the target audience is people concerned with the social problem of children and people who like children in general. We also told them our stance that if there were any questions, we would be ready to answer to them.
However, four days later they responded with a very short E-mail stating simply “We are not interested in shipping this title on Steam”. Shortly after receiving this response, “The Key to Home”’s store page was deleted, and the payment we made to SteamDirect was returned.

After sending them numerous E-mails requesting a direct explanation as to why it was deleted, the response we finally got was essentially “(because)we think this novel’s core audience is pedophiles”.
However, since that is the exact opposite message of this game, it is clear that their decision was based on an ill informed and misinterpreted understanding of its content.

We have continually taken a strong stance AGAINST promoting crimes against children.
This stance of ours may already be obvious to those of you who read these discussion boards, but any users hinting at sexual acts with minors have been swiftly banned and we have also made it very clear to people that this title contains no sexually explicit images whatsoever.

We have continually asked Valve to inform us of any specific issues that they have with us or this title, but as of this moment we have yet to receive any clear response.

While it does have eye catching visuals, “The Key to Home” is a game that offers much more than meets the eye. This is a novel game that aims to raise social awareness of child and school related social issues through a story about four troubled heroines who, under unexpected circumstances, join forces with a young hapless teacher to fight against the evil forces that mean to exploit children.

There are no direct sexual expressions in this game whatsoever.
We make no hesitation in declaring that this game is meant not to make a negative impact on the world, but rather to make a positive impact on it by providing its players with new ideas and perspectives.

Also, this title is already on sale in Japanese stores after having been approved as “appropriate for all ages” and even has a physical disc version that has been available for several months now.

Many people have already played this game and as of this moment, there hasn’t been a single complaint from any one saying that this game is aimed at pedophiles.

We are ready to answer and respond to any and all question related to this title. Also, if any areas are deemed to contain unacceptable content we are prepared to deal with them.
Valve has not yet responded to any of the inquiries we have made over these last few days.
However, we still firmly believe that valve is a company that respects the right to freedom of speech and that they will allow us to reach a conclusion through fair discussion.

At this time, we are open to listening to your ideas and opinions on how we might fully correct this matter and bring this title back onto steam.

I thank you again for your support, and look forward to hearing from you all.

But before all this, this president of the publisher referred this thing "a lolicon novel game":

Meanwhile another "pedophile game" is coming to Steam:

And on the bright side (or dark side, should I say?), new trailer of The 25th Ward: The Silver Case:

So I decided to try VNs out. I guess I wll be dropping whatever I find worthwhile in this topic.

The first one is evening surprise a very lighthearted VN from russians (english translation is available). No sexual context, no violance, no insults and similar stuff. It's very short and can be completed in 10-20 minutes. The ending might really catch off guard, although if pay a lot of attention you can kind of figure it out.

Press switch

A VN about a device that allows it's user to switch bodies with others, alter their minds, change gender and a lot more. Contains a fuckton of text and choices, sadly it's unfinished. You might think that this VN is mainly about sex but it's not. Good portion of choices would lead you to various sex scenes but it's you who makes a decision, right ? Besides that there is also a lot of social aspect ( which appears to me as the main aim of the novel ) and how differently people can behave plenty of it is comical or even tragic and of course it depends on what you are doing. But as I said it's unfinished and a lot of paths/choices are unavailable. If you want to try you should download both 0.3 and 0.4 versions, because 0.4 doesn't allow you to play old content. It has been in development for 4 years and latest update was 2 months ago, I hope author doesn't abandon it because this novel is the most interesting implementation of body/mind alteration I've ever seen.

What's the point of Monobeno without the porn? I mean it has smug lolis but I don't think that is enough.

Alright here comes another pair.

Hitogotchi

Can't even say if it even qualifies as VN but the idea is cool anyway. Author describes it as a reversed tamagotchi, you play as a monster and a girl comes to your house to take care of you how this will happen depends on your choices.

Usotsuki Genius (<-- is VNDB link. Click here to go to the author's website)

Story takes place in a magic kingdom Hollafken where everyone lies to increase their magic power. You play as a girl who is an "Ugly duckling" because she for some reason speaks truth and her power is very low. Everyday a powerful young mage comes to your house to express his feeling towards you or to just hang around but as you might've guessed that means he only tells lies. This VN is fully devoted to their relationship, what comes of it is of course up to the player.

Both of the VNs are very lighthearted. As I see it, it's hard to find a novel that doesn't try to oppress the player with "deep meaning" or something and isn't perverted in some way. So, while the novels above might not be very interesting but they are very cute and easy to take, so I recommend to try them out.

Since everyone talks about Doki Doki and it also happens to be free, I finally decided to give it (and VNs in general) a try and even though I knew some spoilers I enjoyed it VERY much. Decent art, good story, clever gimmicks... It stays with you even after completing it, just like a good book. Could you recommend me something similar?*

With good story, decent art (no deformed shit like clannad) and characters I'll care about.

It's not about hentai, I just don't want any annoying censorship in my games. Both stay night and ataraxia have uncensor patches so there should be one for tsukihime too right?

Jiro Ishii is a game creator, known for 428: Shibuya Scramble, a unique visual novel adventure game using live action sequences. His work extends beyond games as he is also an author and scenario writer, working on both anime, film and theater projects.

Ishii will take us to Cocomaru, a new theater that recently opened in the Kichijoji area, offering a curated selection of films in addition to an event space where Ishii and his friends gather to organize screenings. Long-time resident of the area, we will follow him to the Inokashira Park, where he often wanders looking for new ideas.

Many of Ishii’s projects, in addition to 428, are set in Shibuya, which he sees as an area that is fit for any type of story. We will learn more about his career and his views on creative storytelling while exploring the city.

Out of curiosity, can anyone recommend a fantasy visual novel that isn't just about getting into other people's pants (not that I have a problem with eroge content, it's just that I can download fap material for free, so I feel when that's all it is, I'm not getting my money's worth). I'm already familiar with the Fate series, and I've read Fault, Dies Irie, Tokyo Babel, and Saya no Uta, but I can't really find any useful lists of precisely what I'm looking for.
