Something Ive been thinking about lately is whether their first game was also their best...

tis FNV.

tho, since both FNV and KoTOR2 look like expansions built on other studios' work MoTB is the one mostly theirs but that's actually an expansion so it must be Alpha Brotocol :smug:

Funny that their best work's central appeal was Avellone edgy writing + british stage actress voice acting, and not the actual "game" part.
Yeah - it wasn't a great game by any stretch, plus had a horribly unfinished endgame and an overlong tutorial hub. The writing and voice acting from Kreia were great, but I don't think it's Obsidian's best "game".

Exactly

Its a little crazy when u think about it
Without MCA, no one will even care about Obsidian games. Look how quickly they dived in quality once MCA was booted out

Had a better story and better characters than MotB, way less clunky gameplay, but also way easier. It's certainly their best storyfag game, and I prefer it to any of their other games I've played except maybe Storm of Zehir for its gameplay.

MotB is close in the story department but it failed to have a satisfying heel ending. I was left wanting for a good justification to side with Kelemvor and preserve the Wall of the Faithless but the game just never produced.

For us people without cerebral palsy, writing is really unnecessary and overblown cutscenes detract from the experience, making Avellone one of the cardinal decline enablers of this industry.

Fallout: New Vegas is a much more sprawling, competent and complete game. It doesn't completely fall apart in the endgame. So, my vote is on that one.

KOTOR 2 still has better writing (more Avellone spread per square km).
This, although both of them have plenty of cut (/unimplemented) content. I guess the big one in NV, the lack of much of the planned Legion content, just feels less jarring and the overall C&C of the game is better anyway compared to KotOR2.

KotOR2 offers a nice contrast to KotOR in how it portrays a SW universe that feels not only 'darker', but also more barren compared to the one portrayed by its predecessor. So I don't really blame it for not being a sprawling sort of game (compared to an open world Bethesda style game no less). I only wish there were more ways to handle the various key story moments. Biggest annoyance in that regard for me is the Onderon situation. Let me side with Vaklu without having to kill the jedi master since, regardless of LS or DS playthrough, having the conclave happen near the end is a satisfying tying of the knot for that aspect of the game's narrative. And being pro or anti Republic shouldn't be framed as a matter of LS vs DS anyway (as G0-T0 shows). "But muh princess." - then have the LS pro-Vaklu choice be with the princess getting away and the DS pro-Vaklu choice be with the execution of the princess and you having to kill the jedi master as well in the process.

MotB is hindered by its engine.
Any story on top of that garbage can't be good enough.
Same applies for FNV.

So obviously it's KotoR 2.
Everything else they released is hot garbage.

Most of their games if not all except KotOR are dragged down by their engine.

KotoR 2 is worse than MotB, New Vegas, Stick of Truth, and Deadfire. Way too easy, still burdened by consolified party control and controls in general (have fun scrolling through your items/powers/grenades in combat), and last part of the game is rushed as shit. I have soft spot for the characters and story, but those are not enough to salvage rest of the game being quite weak.

I haven't played all of their games (like for example Armored Warfare, Stick of Thuth, Pathfinder Adventures etc.), but from those I had KOTOR2 wasn't the best. The game wasn't even properly finished to begin with. There was a lot of cut content that some fan patches restored. KOTOR2's a mess, I'd say.

1. MotB has the best writing, good story, well-written characters and exploring mature themes.
2. KotOR2 is p. good.
3. F:NV is overrated by the Codex.
This is something I'm always perplexed with while I see Obsidian praised for their writing. MotB has good writing, because... because of what, exactly? It's an epic-level campaign, so obviously it's about deities and planar shit, indeed like souls and reincarnation and whatever. Does it make it good, or just level-appropriate? If we consider what's the basic bitch dynamics of MotB, straying away from the trappings of what's level-specific, it's just a story of going to one town, one forest, one mage academy...

I don't think they've ever made a game above a 7/10 tbh.

KoToR 2, FO:NV and PoE1 are probably their best full games, but none of them were very well rounded, and MoTB is obviously an expansion pack but would take top spot as their best release for me.

A lot of shit they churn out is just fucking boring, at times even the good stuff.
