As the title says: What game did you spend the most time on in total? For me, this question is surprisingly hard to answer given the lack of time keeping in older titles. I think it's probably a Blizzard RTS as I spend a lot of time in Warcraft III (including DotA), Starcraft and Starcraft 2. However, Diablo 2 is a strong contender as is Baldur's Gate 2 as multiple play throughs quickly rack up a lot of time.

Hard to say for definite as mine are spread over several systems, some of which don't measure game-play time, but at a guess I'd say my top 5 most played are:
  • X-Com '94
  • Baldur's Gate 2
  • Afterburner 2
  • Phantasy Star 4
  • Star Control
EDIT: Total War: Rome would be in with a shout too

About a thousand hours on all Dark Souls combined.
Then ~300 hours on BG2 playthroughs.

The western road to Erromon.
Guild Wars 1 - About 6000 hours since 2008. (Probably about a third is idling in Kamadan.)
Crusader Kings II - About 2500 hours since 2013.
Conan Exiles - About 1600 hours from 2017 - 2021.
League of Legends - About 3000 hours since 2010.
War Thunder - About 700 hours since 2014.
LotRO - Probably about 1000 hours over the course of five months in 2011-2012.
Halo: Combat Evolved on PC - Unknown. I was an admin in a Racing clan and spent a degenerate amount of time playing from 2005-2009. Xfire used to track the hours, I reckon about 2000 or so.

I just checked and it seems like I have played over 48 days (1152 hours) of Path of Exile, so I would tentatively declare it the winner. Other games I had in mind were:
  • Baldur's Gate 2 - I did several playthroughs and it is a very long game
  • Planescape Torment - also pretty long and my favorite RPG of all time, so I replayed it a lot
  • Warcraft 3 - Played this all the time as a teenager
  • System Shock 2 - I must have replayed this 10 times or more, however it is pretty short compared to the others
  • Darkest Dungeon - This was one of the first games that popped into my mind, however GOG only shows 30 hours played which seems too low, maybe some statistical error
I can't find reliable statistics for most of these games as this simply was not a thing back in the day. Also, time played and how often I played something are very different things. For example, I played Prince of Persia Warrior Within a lot but it is so short, it does not stand a chance against the other titles. On the flipside, two playthroughs of Cyberpunk 2077 already consume 155 hours but I never even considered the game for this list

Around 20.000 hours in Warcraft III's DotA and Dota 2 combined

I think between 5.000 and 6.000 in Guild Wars

As for single player probably Diablo II Lord of Destruction

top 5 would have to be, in no specific order:

Star Wars
- Jedi Knight
- Jedi Academy
- Battlefront (2004, mostly multiplayer)

Civilization 2

Jagged Alliance 2

next 5 for a top 10:
probably Dark Souls 2, Daggerfall, Master of Orion 3, 7.62 High Calibre and for sheer number of replays Temple of Elemental Evil.

no clock at hand, but it must be elite 2. i played it for like 7 years (but during a phase of my life when i was never at home), my pilot was several centuries old, maybe over a millennium.

1. HoMM3 - Loved the game as teenager, and still do now. Still return to it once in a while.
2. Warcraft 3 + fun maps - The only game I ever played online. Stopped playing it around 2010, and thanks to modern Blizzard decisions I'll probably never return to it.
3. Half-Life + mods (CS was still a mod when I was playing it) <- I think I played the single player campaing only a single time, but CS, The Specialist, Day of Defeat, Sven Coop, etc. made it easily the most played LAN party game.
4. BG2 + mods <- At least 6-7 full runs with various mods over the course of time, and it is still my favorite rpg.
5. Age of Wonders III <- I keep returning to this once in a while, and a single map can take multiple hours. That must have added up over ~10 years.

The Long Dark is the longest documented one, but I've also played Stalker and Ghost Recon (the original) almost exclusively for 5+ years each.

Starcraft for sure when I was a kid. There was so many times my parents threatened to cut the power cable of my computer if I didn't do some homework.

More than a thousand hours in Vicky 2, definitely, because I've been playing it every year for nearly a decade now. Definitely less than that for all the others.

ADOM, Civilization 4, Heroes of Might and Magic III, XCOM: Terror from the Deep.
Also, sadly, Magic the Gathering. Thankfully, I haven't gotten into MMORPGS, but I blew many hours on War Thunder.

Rookie numbers compared to some of you, but:

State of Decay 2 - 757
Civ V - 201
Bad Company 2 - 195
Terraria - 176
PoExile - 142

Demon's and Dark Souls are in the 100-200 range, but I don't own those games anymore to check.
Dwarf Fortress might be the second highest after SoD2, but I lack numbers.
Street Fighter Alpha 3 has to be up there, definitely across the 3 Alphas.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Gotta be either Diablo 2 or HoMM3. I haven't played either in years, but I know I eventually will again sometime.

1. Neverwinter MMO (the only MMO I ended up playing extensively for years)

2. Morrowind (still gutted that I can't throw the empire out of Morrowind)

3. Diablo 2 (yes, I'm a degenerate)
