Why are you disgusted rusty_shackleford? Before this whole romance degeneracy, oldfag inclined RPGs were crammed with puzzles. This is pure :decline:
OP should dump romancefag into the garbage bin and replace it with puzzlefag. Fuck romances.
Puzzles are stupid. They almost never have anything to do with the game itself and purposely restrict the ways it can be solved to artificial solutions unrelated to your character. Every puzzle is artificial.
RPGs should have problems, not puzzles.
The Gordian knot was a puzzle. Alexander turned it into a problem, and showed why problems are superior when he cut it.

And if you disagree you are required to solve a sokoban before replying.
Technically correct.

unsuprisingly, most codexers are combatfags, that doesnt care about the feel of the game, or the story being told.

JUST WANNEL CLICK BUTTANS PEW PEW PEW, and autistic stats and builds.

Make me care about the game and the story first, then try to introduce fun combat, but without autistic balance
I mean, someone here sounds autistic...

If I want story I read a book. In a game I want other things.

Combatfag dual classed into Larpfag is the best combo.
you're an abomination

You're German
Good that you acknowledge your betters
Beerguts and schnitzel is all I know about that place.
I know that they have friendly foot fetishists and Das Schwarze Auge rpg system. And millions of turkroaches they invited. But other than that, not much more than you.

I'm combat + system fag but i would vote explorefag as well if allowed 3 votes.

I don't believe for a second that there are so few romance fags on the Dex.

Yeah that's what I don't get about people that love games just for stories. Why watch a horribly low quality movie with a hackneyed plot, when there are actual movies made to be watched. I get being engrossed in the setting because you enjoy the gameplay, then wanting to learn more about the story, but if you're just here for a story, why not read a book or watch a movie? Then you don't have to click any buttons or worry about stats or builds.

It's ok if you actually don't like video games.

The "read a book" is the crucial point here. You do. I do. Many others do. But many don't.

Explorfag with a side dish of Stats Autism.
Fucking love looking under every rock, messing with puzzles, and combining mechanics in unexpected ways.

I chose combat and simulation, but exploration is a solid runner up and may actually be more accurate than simulation, depending on my mood.

I'm not really surprised to see C&C do so well here, but I guess that explains why many people seem to only like around 4 titles in the history of gaming. ;)

It's a pretty stupid question to ask. People want some context and a sense of direction. Stories can provide that. And it's always good to have good stories if you need to have a story as a pretext for playing the game in the first place. I mean, who in his right mind would want a shitty story?

To give an example: Majesty is a good game on its own, but the briefings really add a lot of atmosphere to it (despite being relatively simple in concept and execution), because the text was very well written and the voice actor did his job superbly. Even briefings from WarCraft II were adding a lot of strategical and tactical context to simple maps, helping to bring the universe to life, as did briefings from StarCraft I (which were even better). Yes, you could have a game without "stories", but these games would be lesser because of it.

Gameplay aside, the cRPG genre does give the player the ability to direct the flow of the narrative (or at least such is the assumption. In truth many cRPGs fail to pull this particular aspect in the manner it deserves, reducing it to cosmetics). This is something you won't get from reading a book or watching a movie.

If there is the problem then it lies with not putting enough emphasis on player's agency nor having system(s) in place to provide such agency. It is obvious by now that hand-crafting everything is unsustainable approach in designing cRPGs.

Problemfag sounds gay tbh. Puzzles are for monocled gentlemen, problems are for problematic cunts.
Puzzles =/= problems. Problem solving can be anything. Even something like a resource management is problem solving at its core.

Simulation and C&C.

I consider LARPing to be a substitute used in shit simulations. Actual ingame mechanisms should allow you to explore your role and forge your identity. Reactivity is key here. A well simulated world with actually hard-working but beleaguered citizens and a working economy should react with suspicion to murder hobos dressed up like drag queens with a lightshow of sparkling magic items on the side. Maybe even without outright hostility, depending on your power level.

C&C ties in with simulation as well, especially in open world games. Your simulation is weak if the player has very limited choices to make in an entire world or if those choices are ineffectual.

IOW, I'd be a LARPer if I was more autistic, but I actually want the game to present me with choices and mechanics that reflect my character.

Rusty likes romance problems with "companions".

Rusty is obviously a troll. Why would someone concern himself with what he likes or not when he's perfectly capable of saying anything (including contradicting himself), if only it provokes some kind of a reaction from the people?

I'm not any kind of fag. Games are good in specific ways. The Codex has always looked for an RPG that's good at everything, or a RPG that excels at one thing so well that the rest doesn't matter so much.

I'm man enough to say I enjoyed Skyrim for what it was. W3 was better but infuriating because it could have been much better. And I'll always play BG because it's the best RPG ever made.

But if they made a perfect virtual world simulation, or something like Westworld with an RPG rulest; the Codex would be bitching because there wasn't a drone with a neural link to give an isometric view of the battlefield. Or something like that spydrone mod in Deus Ex.

Yeah, you want context and a sense of direction, to inform the gameplay. That means you value the gameplay, with the story as an enhancement to that. Just like I said. If you're just here for the story, why aren't you watching a movie or reading a book? I was responding to people saying the most important thing in a game is the story. If you came for a story, a video game is a bad place to look. If you came for gameplay, video games are the best place to look. Story, aesthetics, lore, graphics, and all those kinds of things can enhance the gameplay.

I agree, the briefings in Warcraft and starcraft made the game better. But if the gameplay sucked, those briefings wouldn't have mattered at all, except maybe to this odd breed of people who come into one medium hoping for another.

So that was a pretty stupid response to a reasonable question. In the future, you should read more so you aren't so bad at it. Also, why are so many people here so gay for Rusty's attention? It's pretty funny how little effort it takes from him to rile you clowns up... "Oh no he isn't 100 percent consistent in his stated opinions, which for some reason I keep track of". He's probably not gonna fuck you guys, and honestly, I doubt he looks anything like his forum picture anyway.

Explore by a good margin.
Lore would be next. The knowledge of the world around me helps with the fun in exploration.

For anyone that chooses story I would love to know which games stories were that good.
After playing all Larian games every story should be great.

The Gordian knot was a puzzle. Alexander turned it into a problem, and showed why problems are superior when he cut it.

And if you disagree you are required to solve a sokoban before replying.

The problem with puzzles is that they skip all abstraction and need to be solved directly by the player. Which makes the game world less believeable. When I find a monster nobody could beat and my hero defeats it easilly it's understandable that the PC is a great fighter. When I door protected by a puzzle/riddle nobody was able to solve for hundreds of years and it's something a 12 years old could solve it makes me think that people populating this world might be slightly retarded.

What about when you, through great effort, unlock various doors and traps and things which have stood for hundreds of years, and then somehow some asshole is already in the treasure room stealing your goddamn treasure?

despite making up only 24% of the population, storyfags makes you believe it's the single most important thing in rpgs
Clearly the poll was made by a combatfag plant who conspired to split the vote three ways to deny his opposition its rightful place in first! The real number is above 46%! Such chicanery cannot go unanswered.
Operation storyfag chaos has been a complete success

It is not either/or kind of situation. We're talking about games that managed to get synergy between their gameplay and story elements. While they were liked for their gameplay, they are remembered more for their story. Look at Planescape: Torment - the eternal Top 1 of the Codex. Legacy of Kain series (Soul Reaver games in particular) is another example of a story that elevates the game.

So that was a pretty stupid response to a reasonable question. In the future, you should read more so you aren't so bad at it.
You're the one who tries to equate video games to books and movies while expressing his surprise why people don't just read books or watch movies instead, not me. You're also the one who doesn't get what makes video games stand out as a medium in comparison.

Also, why are so many people here so gay for Rusty's attention? It's pretty funny how little effort it takes from him to rile you clowns up...
