No Adventurefag option -> :decline:

The appeal of great RPGs like Might & Magic II, Grimoire, or Ultima IV, is going on a world-spanning adventure and not knowing where it's going to take you.

When I play a game I expect all systems to be good. If a game is great in certain elements it can overcome being lacking in others.
I'll never understand people who play purely for 'combat' or 'story'.

Good example is Arcanum(shit combat great everything else). Toee(good combat shit everything else).

The biggest killers for me generally are shit encounter design and bad writing.

Good example for shit combat design is the IWD games. Everything else about the game is fine i guess but the entire last third of the game is mostly copy pasted ice troll mobs.

Probably adventurefag. But normally I just like a full package if it’s fun enough and not too tedious. So, like Fallout games.

I'd have voted for Atmosphere, Combat, Exploration, Story, Simulation and kingcomrade but you know, 2 votes.

The way I see it "Systems autist" can mean the overall gameplay and it's design - making this option more important than "Combat Fag"

Then "Explore Fag" imo includes level design, quest design and worldbuilding

Fuck, I'm the only one who voted "simulationfaggot"

I enjoy exploration above all else, but I also felt compelled to vote combat given the number of games I play focused on turn-based tactical combat. After all, exploration and combat are the fundamental components of RPGs, along with the character aspects.

My team has the sexiest and deadliest waifus you can recruit.
Story/Combat for me. Have to have both to get me interested. But I also want some combo of C&C, decent graphics (fuck off retro pixels), atmosphere, and exploration, and tend to be a completionist.

Fuck, I'm the only one who voted "simulationfaggot"

I would have voted that, but it only appeared later.

[Later note: ok, changed my secondary, "graphics whore" to "simulationfaggot" :D I'm still a graphics whore and most of the other things too though :) ]

Atmosfagggotry/ambiancefaggotry has 3 combined components: art style, sound and music. I respectfully disagree with the opinion that narration can match this combo.
You can still achieve ambiance with narration/story to a degree, but we are discussing about games not books.

For games imo, these 3 components are more crucial than any story. Words are the language of humans, music and sound is the language of the universe. We are part of the universe and music is the code.
By creating harmonious sound-vibrations, you can extend and expand the mental horizons of any game.

Go play Age of Decadence muted, it will be half the experience. Imagine Morrowind or PS:T without their unique art direction. You can't have exotic/unique worlds without masterfully created ambiance. If you value interesting settings, you need this shit.

Ambiance also adds to the exploration (well, you also need good level design and quality content, which means multiple factors) but still, it works like a secret ingredient, an exotic spice.

I love immersion, graphics, stories and lore. I also haven't got more than 5 hours into a game with bad combat in years

I'm a completepackagefag. I tend to prefer games that are good but not great at everything vs a game that is amazing at one thing but is shit at everything else, or somehow otherwise fatally flawed. Planescape is an amazing game but I only spent 50% of the game enjoying the wonderful atmosphere and quests and uncovering the story. The other 50% of the game I was dungeon crawling while pondering the most efficient ways to commit suicide. Not to mention Curst which feels like the worst sections of Throne of Bhaal were copy and pasted into the game. Compare this to something like Baldur's Gate 2, it never reaches the heights of Planescape but at least I could enjoy the game from beginning to end.

Of course this can only go so far. Dragon Age: Origins is a complete package, but it's also boring as shit.

Used to be a huge story fag. I played rpgs exclusively for story and liked ocassional romance stuff when it wasn't cringe (a lot of the time it was though). RPGs like BG2, Arcanum and Bloodlines were my favorite games even though i haven't limited myself to only those rpgs and played Gothic, Morrowind, Arx fatalis etc. But with amount of pozz in modern and modern "oldschool" "rpgs" story devolved into a huge mass of shit scribbled by diversity hires and feminists and romances are just box checking and agenda. Hard to expect a good well written story when these types of devs can't even finish the game on time if at all. So story is shit, characters are cringy, world building is shit and lacks any logic, lore is boring and generic as fuck, this is your rpg today. There are no more creativity. And C&C is what now people think dying and starting over in dark souls means i guess.

So i've become more and more explore\combat-fag over the years, i used to dislike games where you create your entire party, now i like them. And i always loved strong atmosphere in games, so i guess im of that fag too. And a bit of autismo\simulation faggotry as well.

I can still enjoy a good story but if you really need story go and playread VN or something. They have better story than rpgs by diversity hires and has beens.

Overwhelmingly CRPG gameplay is combat. Bad combat, bad game. Exploration is nearly as vital to the genre and can compensate for many mistakes if the spirit of adventure is captured. One if the most significant hallmarks of a good game is wanting to find more content.

rpgs that are nothing but combat are as bad as the new gamebooks passing themselves off as rpgs

Gary Gygax said:
As false to the game form as the pre-scripted “story,” is play that has little more in it than seek and destroy missions, vacuous effort where the participants fight and kill some monster so as to gain more power and thus be able to look for yet more potent opponents in a spiral that leads nowhere save eventual boredom. So pure hack and slash play is anathema to me too.

Tactical, and strategic, play is a fine addition to the RPG, and if it is in-character, something I see as desirable, In this category fall such things as exploration, economics, politics, and even intrigue.

sorry, "combatfag" games aren't RPGs :smug:

Combatfaggotry is synonymous with stats/system autism.
Combat is more than stats, it is also good encounter design, enemy choice, weapon or spells variety, clickyness for real time, etc.
It is, and all that is important as well. But without the stats/system autism it more often than not falls flat. There are notable exceptions of course, but combat is almost always more enjoyable if it's accompanied by some nice autism.

Too many options. If you're a storybro you already like lore, atmosphere and such.
