That's not a problem: You see, you can't just spend the buttons directly. For that you need to buy brofists at 4¢ each which you can use to "press" the buttons to spend them. Each button press uses up a brofist (and the button) but only has a 50% chance at working to make things more exciting.

And if you run out of buttons to press you can trade them with other denizens on the codex marketplace with only a small fee gong to the button creator as well as the administration for each trade.

Hey, it's similar to Steam trading cards.

You could buy ratings, you could trade them (fee to DU), and probably to make you think 'dex is free you could gain limited amount of ratings to use in some way, maybe 5 of each rating free per month.

This would be an interesting and exciting way to scam all of us out of money on worthless pixels!
