Why did Real Time Strategy genre die out?

Impossible Creatures was the peak of the genre and nobody could top it, everyone gave up

All RTS feel very much the same, once you reach a certain level of skill. It's all a matter of balancing the same three elements.

It was killed for the same reason as lots of other genres. It does have various problems though but so do all games.

It didn't die out, there are more RTS now coming out than I can follow. For example this is maybe 1/5 of RTS coming out in next few years:

Rather than die out it's more accurate to say that it's less mainstream than it was before.
By the way, played some of the demos mentioned in the video.

Battlefall: State of Conflict - a very straightforward Tiberium Sun clone, not bad but not much unique stuff compared to all the others.

Annihilate the Spance - just completed the demo, it's really good. There is practically no micro and with some exceptions you don't have an ability to controll your units directly - the game is fully focused on base building and strategy. Plays almost like an auto battler.

Darfall - Warcraft 3 mixed with They Are Billions type of games. Hero abilities are boring but the game itself i found kinda fun. Reminded me of certain mods for Warcraft 3/Starcraft 2.

Space Tales - a very heavily Starcraft 2 inspired game with retro futuristic aesthetics. No multiplayer is planned as far as i know, devs are focusing all their efforts on singleplayer campaign. I liked it.

Relieved for kb+m games, unhappy for TA+supremecomm cloning.

They should give up 3D for some radical fog of war.

Why would you want to download 180 GB game just to be able play few factions i 4K resolution? 3D models are used in RTS for a reason.

(runtime) 3D is garbage for RTS it always was.
Besides 180GB would be some pretty wiiiild shit volume rendering.

Yea and the reason is that they should know better like, you know
you can have 8 players with max unit count in BW without a hitch, and runtime 3D barely has any complexity and shits itself. Like these new games will.

Courtesy of a random anon on /vst/ here's a demonstration of 60,000 units at 60 FPS with 3D graphics.

Edit: oh, I forgot that tritosine2k, being a massive faggot, is ignoring me. So he can live on in blissfully retarded ignorance about what impact 3D actually has on unit limits & performance.

Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth is my current RTS fix. It's not the most complex in the world but it's fast paced enough to be entertaining for a while. Like all RTS I will put it down eventually

Not sure if this was pointed out but IMO rts almost died when consoles dominated gaming. You cant play a classic RTS on a console controller. Turn based survived because of a more grognard audience...

I like it. Great micro (tramples, formation and facing), great faction differentiation, and a good base building system that constrains the field of battle to a good shape for interesting engagements.

I completely ignored it BitD due to it being a licensed EA game, but surprisingly it's well designed and now I recommend it.
