Squeenix Why do people hate FF XIII, but love FF X?

Penelo is a character who literally has nothing to do with the story and just decides to tag along. Unless you count fanservice as worthwhile goal.

Goddammit Vaan, sometimes you're so stupid even I'm taken aback!

Fan service you say?

Do you have... some of that fan service?

Oh, it's nothing spectacular. Her ass just seems to magically find ways to be in camera's focus whenever it can. Reason why it stuck out for me with Penelo is because she has nothing to do with the story, even less than Vaan. She's basically just there for ass shots.

I think the main reason was that in FF10 you could empathize somewhat with the protagonist, as he bumbled his way through a world that was new to him, and so he asked a lot of the questions you would. "What's a Yevon," "What's Sin," etc. Whereas in FF13, it's mostly just a sequence of events, that pass by quickly with no chance for real empathy with the characters, because you have NO IDEA what they are doing, or saying. It's like they wrote out the universe, and then decided to make things non-obvious in what they did. And then not explain anything to the players beforehand.

Penelo's panties were visible under her skin-tight bodysuit, which was where her fanservice came in. But yeah, Balthier and Basch were both perfectly great choices for a main character, but executive meddling killed all chances of that.

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is. Shadorwun: Hong Kong Divinity: Original Sin 2 Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Pathfinder: Wrath I'm very into cock and ball torture I helped put crap in Monomyth
One could say the males in final Fantasy games, are also fan service. Why does it always have to be about the female characters?

Japanese games are made for children, so what you are looking for is a generationao gap.
Sometimes this hits harder than you expect it to. I recently tried playing FF8 again, It was my favorite FF game when it came out. It still is a gorgeous game, but I forgot how far you're pushed into the role of a shy, awkward, feminine teenage boy. Sure it's every autistic teenager's dream to feel like a secretly attractive misunderstood ladies man when you're actually just a pussy no one likes, but as a 31 year old man it's just kind of depressing and sad, and I had to stop playing it.

I hated Squall already when I was a teenager :smug:
Me too, but honestly what FF game had a main character that wasn't lame? Cecil was alright, but he was also a war criminal like twice over.
FF male characters always either gay, narcissists or obnoxious meatheads. Maybe it's why I prefer female characters, I don't have to relate to them and they look better.

It's shocking how much rule 34 there is for both of them.

Almost more than Tifa.
If you count them separately for each picture they're in together, maybe.
To be fair, Tifa has been around a lot longer than the other two.

I would say VI - the main character duties are split between Terra and Celes, and they're both pretty good characters.

Squall was the absolute lowpoint. For me personally its Zidane. Bit of a ladiesman, but also a responsible dude when necessary and your typical teenage bro. Being an open person and not going the *awkward interaction* angle was great, especially for a jrpg.

A few of my best friends during my teenager+ years in real life were basically Zidane, so that helped too.

Otherwise I didn't mind Bartz? Actually, yeah. Only two.

But, then again. FF1 and III didn't have a personality and FF VI paid attention equally to a lot of charachters.

I think it'd be great if the main protagonist in (any RPG) was a total incompetent loser with no redeeming qualities. Like interactions would go along:

"Ew you're creepy...."
"Stop staring at me"
"I want to punch your face"
"Why aren't you leveling up?"
"We're having a party but you're not invited"

and you have to pay all your party members to stay in your party because they think you suck and don't want to be around you.

Squall Tidus was the absolute lowpoint.
Fixed. Nothing could ever be worse than that whiny useless idiotic fumbling self-obsessed ignorant retard with daddy issues. The only good part of FFX was the fact that he dies at the end.

I really hesitated with FFVI because I feel like they really spread the writing and screentime waaaay too thin with the abundance of characters. I'd hazard a guess that most fans of FFVI think it was a strongpoint. That said, Terra and Celes didn't offend me or anything when I played the game, but I haven't played the game in I-don't-know-how-many-years.

The first half is pretty good in terms of characters, but after the apocalypse the characters pretty much never say anything outside of their recruitment quests and one-line commentary aboard the airship. The vast majority of stuff your party members say from that point on tends to be generic lines not attributed to anyone that are the same no matter who is in your party.

Also as for the lame main characters thing - Firion was pretty cool, except for almost getting rape-murdered by a Lamia. Cecil was p cool, Terra/Celes were good and Zidane was semi-tolerable. Bartz, Cloud, Squall and Tidus are all ultra lame, although Bartz is at least kinda funny.

FF8 actually had some of the best designed areas and a really nice dark theme which was better than most of the FF games. FF8 would've been one of the better games, if they killed off some of the main characters, and didn't make them all come from the same foster home; that was fucking stupid.
