because voting for fallout gibs you street cred

If you really want street cred around here, you should be voting for the likes of Wizardry and Ultima. Personally, I've only played part 7 & 8 in both of those classic series, so no street cred for me. :(

The Fallout IP is what it is at this point in time, even if the first two games and the people who made them are not to blame for what came afterwards. It's a Simpsons-like scenario in which the Lady Gaga guest star stuff now outweighs the Hank Scorpio and Stonecutters material.

Fallout 2 was better than 1.

Only if you value amount of content over anything else in games.

Or being able to move characters blocking you in a room, and being able to have a party member hold something for you without the need to buy it back. You could say that stuff got fixed with mods at some point, but you still have to change Fallout to get that fix.

Part of the fun of Fallout is the amount of stuff it allows you to do in its open world.

No, it’s way worse with Fallout. There’s still more good Simpsons than there is bad Simpsons. I haven’t watched The Simpsons in over a decade now really, so I don’t know how things are quality wise anymore, if they’ve gotten better or worse than when I last watched. But, even if it’s all been shit since I last watched, they’d need to go like another 12 or 14 seasons before the bad seasons outweighed the good.

Fallout basically just had 4 years. And as good as Tactics is as a game, they also fucked up some of the aesthetic. Bethesda Fallout on the other hand has been going for 15 years, almost four times longer than good Fallout has been going. And in-between that Interplay themselves did that Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel game that just makes you wonder what the fuck Interplay was thinking. They could’ve just done a regular Fallout game on consoles in 3D, could’ve harkened back to the combat system of Wastland on consoles to align themselves with Final Fantasy X , (which wouldn’t have been a bad idea given how well it sold) could’ve made it simple and just remade the first one in 3D for a larger audience that likely never played it; but instead they made console Brotherhood of Steel.

Voted Gothic, Realms of Arkania, Elder Scrolls.

They're just sort of evergreens for me that I keep coming back to, must be a childhood thing.

There's 4 good Fallout games and 4 bad ones. Who gives a fuck about "years"?

Four? Let’s not go crazy. New Vega is nice, but it’s also marred by needing to adhere to Bethesda’s gameplay. They did improve on Bethesda’s total shit combat, but it’s still not good. And the years are an important factor. It’s the unit of time in which we’ve lived with shitty Bethesda Fallout. And the more time that goes by the less likely it seems we’ll ever get a Fallout in the mold of the original games.

If Obsidian was able to finagle their Fallout spin-off game into being more of a true Fallout then things might be different, but they didn’t. I’m not crazy able their version of Vega either. It seems more stuck in Bethesda Fallout’s idea that the world stopped in the ‘50s as opposed to the original Fallout idea of this crazy Art Deco dystopian retro futurism world. Like, there’s no fuck way the 2077 Strip of Fallout’s world looks as plain as the one in Fallout New Vegas. If fucking Bakersfield has buildings like you see in Necropolis then Vegas should be some insane nightmare version of itself even crazier than the actual thing.

They also missed the very easy joke of turning the Oasis Casino into Sodom and putting it next to Gomorrah. It wouldn’t be too hard to think of something that fit the theme if you look at the old Oasis palm tree entrance.

Wait, what? Can anyone give me a rundown on this?

If there's Pathfinder (2 games), there should be KOTC. Also Geneforge/Avernum.

By no means a pretty game, but man, KOTC1 looked so much better than KOTC2 :negative:

OP, you need to add Brigand to the list, it has already three entries: Oaxaca/Nightmare, Panama, and Battles.

Do you mean Atom RPG? ;)

I voted for Dark Souls, for me it consistently delivers and stays true to it's central theme of hopelessness, misery and being resilent in the face of them in all aspects, visuals, music, story, world design and most importantly gameplay. The level design, particularly in the first game is God Tier, probably the best I have ever seen. I also appreciate the challenge, the complete lack of hand holding and QoL features, it has inspired me to mod mini maps, quest markers and other UI elements out of loads of other games so I can enjoy exploring them more.

I'll confess, the first time I played DS1 I went in blind, as I always do, and I just didn't get that you are meant to piece together the story from in game visuals and item descriptions. Once I understood and engaged with this concept I found I really enjoyed it. Obviously I was familiar with picking up pieces of lore here and there in messages and emails and the like in other games, but those tend to be superfluous pieces of kore, I had never experienced having to decipher the whole story this way. I understand that some people may think that it is a cheap way of inserting a story without paying for voice acting, constructing a structured narrative etc., but I love it, so wouldn't care even if that was the reason. Having to put in the effort to understand the story fits with the central theme running throughout the game of putting in effort and being persistent and resilient, so I'm not convinced it was wholly a cost cutting measure.

I have never been a fanboy of any individual or company, Miyazaki is the closest I have to a hero . Here are some of this based heroes' quotes responding to inclusivity obsessed journos asking for an easy mode in Elden Ring

“I do feel apologetic toward anyone who feels there’s just too much to overcome in my games, I just want as many players as possible to experience the joy that comes from overcoming hardship. We are always looking to improve, but, in our games specifically, hardship is what gives meaning to the experience. So it’s not something we’re willing to abandon at the moment. It’s our identity.” This is next level genius, Miyazaki understands that no Western journalist is going to tell him he can't identify as anything he wants to be!

Almost all the 0 vote options are ones people specifically asked me to add.

It's good if the poll has a shitton to choose from anyway. If I just put Fallout, M&M, Wiz, Baldur's Gate etc, then people would go straight for them, but if some weird shit like Ravenloft is on there you might get the occasional person who's like "ooh, yeah, my favourite game of all time, I forgot that existed". Pleased to see people voting for stuff like Dark Sun and Magic Candle.

I can't pick one. Baldur's Gate was my favorite until fag simulator BG3 came along.

I can pick my worst series though: anything made by Larian.

Might and Magic 6,7,8 are very dear to me. Even m&m 9 had some cool things in there. Deus Ex obviously, but mostly the original game and Gothics of course.

But honestly there's a lot of good RPGs on the list I would pick as well

Should specify whether Grimoire counts as part of the Wizardry series, given its development history.

Yes the poll is very unfinished

Grimoire should be in Wizardry, and so should Wizards and Warriors (since its all Bradley)

Wasteland should be with Fallout, since its the same universe (Fallout 1 real name was supposed to be Wasteland 2 but Fargo lost the rights)
What? Fallout was in development as its own thing before it became a proper Interplay project. It wasn't from the start at all meant to be a wasteland sequel, even if inspired by it. Tim Cain is pretty clear about that.

I played 2 total conversions of Deus Ex, offering new maps and campaigns: Zodiac and 2027. Both were quite enjoyable, though inferior to the original game.

Fallouts (1, 2, NV and all the crazy total conversions of 2 the Czechs and Russians made)

While Atom RPG is a cool game, I had actual Fallout 2 total conversations in mind: Fallout: Resurrection (Czech), Fallout of Nevada and Fallout: Sonora (Russian).

Why does Deus Ex and Gothic have so few votes..
:negative:
Deus Ex is probably the only series where both old and new are good. Well, Deus Ex and Baldur's Gate now.
Conveniently forgetting about deus ex: invisible war, I see.
Everyone conveniently forgets Deus Ex: the Fall, an episodic mobile game in Deus Ex universe (and a spin-off of Human Revolution) that found its way to PCs too. However it was so bad no episode beyond 1 was ever realised.

I would've expected BG to have more votes, if not winning this, with the recent release of BG3

just shows that people only play it as a 3D porn simulator

I imagine there's a divide between BG1/2 fans and BG3 fans which prevents many members of both camps from voting for it. Personally I can't stand the originals mostly due to the worst and most mindless RTWP combat ever seen in a videogame (and typically bad BioWare writing, and BG1 just being extremely dull in general), while a lot of BG1/2 fans will be pissed off big-time at 3's big changes in mechanics and tone.

Which is all part of the fun of the thread; no matter what series you pick you're gonna end up voting for at least one game you don't like, which is very amusing.
