He should have asked Aonuma if he believes the types items of old can be integrated in an open world Zelda, if it's possible to do that kind of progression when you are free to go to any of the dungeons and solve almost any puzzle with the few abilities learned in the opening. That would have told Aunuma the sense of reward that is now missing. The variety of puzzles and the intelligence of the dungeons thanks to different items and limited climbing. But I know video game sites and magazines don't ask difficult questions. They don't want to lose access.

Fucking Link Between Worlds is living proof you can have progression and item-locked dungeons. WTF is he going on about.

What a retard. "Why don't you want to explore an empty barren field full of copypasted POIs like in Ubishit games?"

I’d play more zelda if cutting grass/bushes and smashing pots and rocks yielded more rats to kill.

Or the plethora of metroidvania games that have risen to fill the void classic Zelda left behind. The concept of finding items that radically alter your gameplay AND unlock new areas of the map in an organic, non-linear way is a brilliant one, and it's baffling that they've discarded that tennet.

Whatever. I've got no shortage of metroidvanias in my backlog, more are on the way, and while having a top down or 3rd person style of that with a high budget would be a nice novelty, it's not needed for the basic formula I'm after.

From Twilight Princess alone:

- Gale Boomerang more or less as-is, greatly helps against certain enemies
- Bow as-is, later upgrade to easy bomb arrows and enhanced zooming
- Various flavors of bombs (regular, water, spider bombs) for enhanced functionality
- Clawshot to turn the game into the Legend of Just Cause. Late game item can be a second one to rapidly climb
- Iron Boots to allow for more underwater exploration, especially near the coast
- Dominion Rod to move statues around, of which there can be far more in the open world
- Fishing Rod for obvious use
- Spinner for massively enhanced movement

I tried several times to play the first NuZelda, but I got bored every time after a while.

The whole landscape is barren and almost empty.
Trying to discover more of it is openly hindered by the stupid stamina system, random rain which prohibits climbing, and (to a lesser degree) by the heat/cold areas.
To explore some of these areas you have to rely on the annoying crafting system to create necessary items or potions.

Getting a transportation unit, so you can traverse the extremely wide and empty landscapes faster AKA a good horse is also a chore and luck to get.
You can of course get a very good horse (and many other things) easily, if you use the Nintendo version of Pay-For-Win lootboxes: the amiibos - available at your local friendly Nintendo merchant.

Fights are best to be avoided if possible, since your weapons and shields break after minimum use and also enemies respawn after each "Blood Moon". The items you get are mostly worthless anyway.
So fighting is basically useless.

Shrines are mostly simple, repetitive, boring and/or have annoying forced fights.
And getting the reward in form of hearts or stanima (one of the few permanent upgrades) is also kind of nerved, since the monsters level up with you.

So the game punishes you for exploring the shrines and upgrading your character.
Why should you get the items, if you hardly getting any advantage from them?

The story (as far as I played) was also very boring.
The problem with this Open World approach is, that they couldn't tell a continuous story.
So you only get disjointed story snippets - mostly in form flashbacks what happened years before the game.

And I got the impression from these flashbacks, that a Zelda game in that time period would have been much more interesting.

It seems, you can finish the game in less of an hour (of course skipping cutscenes) by going directly to Hyrule Castle after finishinig the intro quests.
So the basic game that you have to play is very short.

Everything else (over 90%) is extra and optional.
And for me, it also feels that way!

The game would be more fun if I have some fucking stamina and hearts. Stop making me run like a parapegic dwarf and expect me to spend longer building a car I can't steer than running to the next shrine I want to explore.

Knit picking but the change of shrine colours and making the towers into cannons was a mistake. Shrines being orange made them stand out and look important, the green swirl not so much. And climbing the towers as a kind of mini puzzle felt rewarding while falling from the sky doesn't.

The game should not have stamina for running outside combat. It should be only used for climbing, gliding, swimming and for certain actions in combat. There's a mod for Breath of the wild on the CEMU emulator that does this, and it suits the game really well.

I also used a similar mod for Skyrim when I played it, for the character and the horse. It makes the movement way more confortable.

Elden Ring did that with its stamina (it drained just like in these two Zelda games), and it's a vastly superior experience.

Wtf is that? Btw, DO NOT SCROLL TOO FAR DOWN THAT TWITTER THREAD…..

In Tears of the Kingdom that is the most effective vehicle you can build: a single control platform with two fans to allow for fast forward flying. Sure it steers like ass and has no combat capabilities, but if you just want to travel this is one of the best constructs in the game.

How do you steer?

Ah! Go figure.

Note: don't bing/google hyrule diapers as you might get fetish pics which I had no idea existed.

Are you people really this naïve?

Of course googling "Zelda Diaper" is going to bring up fetish shit. There is absolutely **nothing** you can search that will just yield normal results. You can google "Blue" and you'll find something degenerate.

Really, you should know better by this point

Yep. Steering the fan platform is like driving a car in Just Cause 2: you aim your vehicle in the direction you wish to go, get in, press the foward button and pray to Odin that when you crash (not if: when) it's easy to continue on your journey from a point closer to your destination.
