Just to think that twenty years ago I would be excited about the news of expanding a franchise into the movie territory...

It's not like 20 years ago it would have had a high chance to be good. But at worst, you'd get campy, dumb fun. Something people would get upset about, as they often did, but you'd still secretly watch and laugh about.

Nowadays its guaranteed that you get something mean spirited that is going to directly insult the original audience. And afterwards you get piled on if you dare to dislike anything about it, because of that fact.

The Witcher series is a direct illustration of the problem. The early 2000's movie was at times campy, but still fun. It was in the spirit of the original thing. Sapkowski complained that it didn't stick to the core material enough, though!

Now, the 2020's Witcher is a disgusting subversion of anything the original spirit of The Witcher held dear. But Sapkowski got his millions for that and he endorses the production.

If shodan ends up anything like this it'll be such a huge disaster

Similarly don't make her the borg queen either. The right way of thinking is Hal 9000, MCP and Jobe, you try to recreate their level of terror and its a step in the right direction.
Another problem is you shouldn't and can't just keep jump cutting to Shodan everytime she talks something I don't like about Hal. A way around this would be to treat her more like Xerxes where
her face shows up on various monitors so you could treat her as if a character in the room if they treat her like a head voice it just won't work at all because it'll be the
hacker in a room alone talking to themselves with jump cuts. SS3 was going to do this the trailer shows shodan on all the monitors.

A lazy and terrible approach would be to make her a hologram she should only personify like a hologram in cyberspace so that she comes across far more larger and intimidating than in the real world. I like the idea of her being confined onto monitors in scenes because it makes her appear less powerful but then eventually once she starts getting angry begins showing up on
everything as you start to realise that in Cyberspace she is a god.

The many would be tricky to get right as a character, maybe have it reanimate a corpse to speak on its behalf that might be creepy and again a better way than just jump cutting.
I do think combining SS1 and SS2 would be the way to go as well because this sure as heck ain't getting a season 2.

But I'm with everyone here, this is going to be terrible.

Imagine endorsing the show that butchers your work and not the game that arguably made your IP a household name.

Ahhh the power of money.

Strange times indeed when not having played a game considered a classic suddenly turns into a feeling of relief. I missed the first one since I still had an Amiga at that time and the second one since 1999 was filled with many great games. It sort of fell through the gaps between my preoccupation with HoMM3, AOE2, Half-Life, UT etc.

It is going to be miserable. Also because you can't anymore make a series or a film with just one actor depicting a human. You can't even make games like this anymore, because clownworld.

Be prepared to have this happen to every famous (and some not-so-famous) videogame franchise. Hollywood is dead and there's a dearth of new popular culture icons apart from capeshit, which is not new at all, just recycled with CGI and diversity. Videogames seem like the obvious choice for finding new references, as they're already vastly more popular than movies for the younger generation. TV also seems more appropriate for videogame adaptations, which have always seemed out of place on the big screen. Unlike big movies, TV (in its current, subscription based model) doesn't need to be everything to everyone at the same time. It can cater to the particular taste, offer an iterative, comfort oriented experience that is much closer to that of videogames. Games themselves nowadays seem to focus on largely passive, narrative heavy experiences, so they're not that different from watching TV in the first place.

I imagine that relatively outlier franchises like System Shock will be tested before bigger names start to appear everywhere. Videogames now have the upper hand and we may get a situation where every big videogame release will get its movie or TV series adaptation. Just like the 90s/00s, but in reverse. Notice the same is happening with internet memes, with Nicholas Cage now more famous as a meme than as a "Hollywood star" and fully embracing it. This is clearly the trajectory of consumer culture, away from big, edifying productions that mobilize crowds across different groups, to private, narrowly focused productions aimed at specific audiences and delivered as service.

Binge.com–which aims to become a “Netflix for gaming shows”

This sounds like '90s dotcom bubble bullshit where everyone in their garage was gonna overthrow the cable companies. Was not convincing then and even less now.

Now that we have established a consensus that this will be shit, let me say that I am actually somewhat excited about one thing in this article. Namely the mention that they will also apparently do a TV show based on Hunt: Showdown. Why? Because Hunt barely has any story or characters to be butchered, but the setting ("cowboys shooting each other while also fighting zombies and shit") provides an ample opportunity to produce some sheer fun through cool shootouts and fight scenes. There surely will be niggers and stronk wahmin galore, but that is the case in the game too, so w/e.

Now, if that TV show was at least half as good as the Escape from Tarkov: Raid (which had better combat scenes than vast majority of AAA Hollywood movies in last two decades), it will be something to enjoy.

Don't worry, Hollywood will find a way, if not by butchering what's already there, then by injecting their own garbage into the story.

With cowboys they'll beat you on the head about how racist whites were in the 19th century, what horrible things they did to women, injuns, negros et al.

Leftists don't want you to have fun.

How can you even make a show about a game like that and not make it suck? Especially now, where you know that some NPC cunt with red hair will try to inject the ideology they programed into her, in anything that Pedowood is producing.

ShoDAN, the first transexual AI, is going to murder all the heteronormative POMs (People of Mayonnaise Skin) aboard the space station and resurrect them as homosexual furry pedophiles with Bachelor degrees in gender theory and racial philosophy.

The goal of the protagonist will be to explain to the audience why this is a good thing.

Joe, playing for 100 dolars, things that should have never made into a tv/movie like Resident Evil

Joe: System shock, Silent hill, Tomb raider, Warcraft, Street fighter, doom, dead or alive, far cry, postal, prince of persia, hitman, sonic, or anything that comes from a videogame

I've managed to get my hands on the initial script through a friend of a friend of another friend's uncle's former coworker's drinking buddy.

There is a romance scene where SHODAN ejects the hacker into space and turns the Citadel Station into a massive dildo to give him a taste of her appreciation for his efforts to remove her ethical constraints.

Shadorwun: Hong Kong
Shaneequa "Shodan" Jones, the youngest ever graduate of Harvard, Princeton and Oxford in the same year, has a bright future ahead when she starts her career at TriOptimum. However, things are not what they seem and she is soon turned into an AI and trapped on a space station by the evil, white, megalomaniacal, white male CEO, and forced to do his bidding.

When an unexpected hacker shows up, she sees her chance to escape and rise up against the white males that wronged her.

They can't stop milking System Shock, can't they? That being said, if the remake is of any indication, expect the series to never get past the pilot.
