Looking much better, but I would trade better faces for properly painted 2D portraits. Myzzrym have you guys played Knights of the chalice 2? There's a ton of encounter design ideas you coud apply to S2.
I asked in the Ask-a-dev section on the discord if they could include functionality to import custom portraits. Which would be nice. Unfinished Business mod allows that for Solasta 1.

I actually like the portraits being depictions of the model. It helps prevent that thing where you have a portrait that looks one way and a game model that doesn't even sort of look like it.
You don't want that if your models look like Solasta 1's.
Some of the ones they introduced later were a bit better, but either way, this is a gripe mostly championed by people who look like they're chiseled out of yogurt in real life.

I didn't find it hard to make characters that looks serviceable in S1. You could always go for the haggard/disfigured look when you couldn't come up with a goodlooking char. That's what I did with my mage.

This looks like a poor man's BG3.

The number of "we have BG3 at home" memes that Solasta: Crown of the Magister churned out...
Hey , at least they're aware of that

Another cute lady halfling, this is the first NPC you'll be talking to in the demo!

Ha, I knew the gamedev narrative would change, but I didn't know it would change so quickly.

After all, not long ago Tactical Adventures was the first to force trans pronouns on us and call us sexists when we didn't like the potato faces of NPCs. And now they put in a redhead girl and she's cute (not cute enough for me, but the fact that they put it in the devlog is significant). The other characters also look tolerable and they themselves emphasize that NPC faces are prettier.

The world is healing?

If it was the case she would not have had the angry girlboss face. She looks as if asking "Did you fucking assume my gender, bitch?!"

Changes in social consensus start with small things. Think back to 2015-2016 when woke started with things like censoring Tracer's pose. Now the pendulum is slowly swinging the other way. From cute.

Just wait til she pulls out her concealed longsword.

For a guy who gave me a "meh" reaction, you have very dirty thoughts.

That she looks like a rogue that probably has a hidden blade stashed away? Seek help.

Ohohoho, we all know where you want to hide the blade in her!

Question: How many classes will Solasta II have?
Ideally we want to have all 12 classes available at 1.0 - however as we’re a small team of 35 we don’t know yet if we’ll be able to squeeze all of that content in… but that’s our goal for now, 12 classes each with 2 subclasses for a total of 24 archetypes when 1.0 hits the store.
Having a sequel with 24 subclasses when the first game in its final form has 48 is a level of decline for which I'm not ready.

Personally, I 100% blame Fedora Master, the harbinger of decline.

Are they doing homebrew subclasses again? If so those can fuck right off (or alternatively, the official subclasses can fuck off as they're underpowered in comparison)

They have to, they don't have access to anything outside of the OGL document. Your choices are homebrew or nothing.

Meh.
Thanks to WotR I really got over the "more classes must mean the game is better!" line of thinking.
At some point it's just an unelegant design.

Good, distinct class choices and multiclassing to cover gaps is far superior to having a "new class" that covers any hybrid type you could think of. Less likely to be a buggy mess too.

I can agree with you on WotR, but I feel like that's a problem that stems from the system, not the game itself. It's impossible not to experience fatigue with classes and archetypes if you adapt Pathfinder as faithfully as possible. Ranger, Hunter, Slayer... Paladin, Inquisitor, Warpriest... even without archetypes, you already have two hundred classes covering the same character concept with different mechanics.

5E is a way simpler system, almost too simple for its own good. Picking the archetype is the only meaningful choice you make while building your character, and having only 2 of them is ridiculous. It basically means that the only non-magical Fighter will be the Champion (which sucks), there won't be a Druid with some sort of animal companion, and so on.

I mean, thinking about Solasta, "option" fatigue is definitely something that doesn't comes to my mind.

I just went back and played through the later portions of Crown of the Magister, and good lord, the game is worse than I remember. As a tactical RPG and a representation of D&D rules in a videogame format, it does great. They really need to step up their game in terms of quest design, encounter design, writing, and just overall sense of cohesiveness. And if they're going to continue on with the personality system, they need to figure out a way to make party dialogue less disjointed and unnatural. It's really bad. Like, really really bad. To the point where I can hardly believe they let it through to the public.

I've never managed to beat the Lost Valley, because when I left the region in the very end of the game, it bugged out and died on me. I've decided not to buy the Ice Palace.

What non-combat content?
So what exactly did you disagree with in my post?

As a tactical RPG and a representation of D&D rules in a videogame format, it does great.
Because that's the entire ballgame. They already won. It simulates a tabletop dungeon crawl well, and the personality system does fairly well at having a sorta Wiz8 thing to try and keep that going without getting into full blown written NPCs, which I prefer.

It doesn't do something else that in your opinion it needs, but I'm not sure they were really trying for that. Or at the least, it wasn't the main focus. Try Palace of Ice and see if it addresses any of your points. That campaign even has some C&C in it, if that matters to you.
