Future of RPG genre isn't in the hands of Bioware, Obsidian, Bethesda
It would be good for people to realize that not only do these companies no longer produce the quality of games they used to, they are also not the same companies anymore. The people behind the old classics left long ago. Only the brand name is the same.

The people who worked on the BG games, KotoR, etc? No longer at Bioware.
The people who made New Vegas, Mask of the Betrayer, etc? Most aren't at Obsidian anymore.
The people who made Daggerfall, Morrowind? Most aren't at Bethesda anymore.

Companies are empty shells. They don't make games. People do. And oftentimes, people who are disappointed with a company's new direction leave.
But consumers are often too blind to realize that, and cling to the hope that their favorite company will have a comeback and produce greatness again.
But they can't, because the kinds of people capable of producing greatness are long gone and nobody of that talent is willing to return to a shitty company like that.
That's why making video games should be much more intimate process, like artist making a painting or writer writting a novel. More and more quality solo indie dev projects are appearing, advancement in technology allows that (Monomyth, Legionary's Life, Stellar Tactics and Manor Lords are recent examples). Dev teams should be 3-4 up to 20 people strong. 50 should be maximum, from such team you can expect some Skyrim+ shit. Everything else is corporate mismanaged bloat, mask for money laundering. We're entering true indie gaming era right now

I'm inclined to believe in the incline. Was actually surprised when I checked out the List of Incline thread that quite a few of the upcoming RPG's look promising, but I cannot remember their names (except Colony Ship).

After trying out Nioh I'm looking forward to whatever Team Ninja does next.
Ya know they made a sequel right? I'm not being an asshole, just letting you know in case you didn't.

Seeds of Incline have been planted, fertilezed by money from Steam Early Access, I expect many a good RPG apple to ripen in near future

Yes, I know, I was talking about Nioh games in general. I've only played Nioh 2 so far, because I've heard it was an all around improvement from the first game, and also because I don't feel like playing through both of them.

All those games except KCD are made by 3 men and a parrot. How much staying power do indie RPG's actually have? Some of them will probably do somethings right but expecting greatness, a culmination of so many intricate (and expensive) moving pieces and mechanics in an RPG, is a futile endeavor.

Their heads might be in the game (outside the Globohomo sphere) but it's still just 3 guys and a shoestring budget. I'm personally sick of indie games (along with the contemporary videogame scene in general) and consider them a huge waste of time, even "decent" efforts like Atom or Underrail. There's always too much missing. If the buck is your precious time, you're never getting enough bang for your buck with them.

6. Legionary's Life Dev's next game (has been in prod for 2+ years, much more "complex" then his previous work, he's very proud of what he's done so far, most likely historical setting)
A Legionary's Life is probably my favorite RPG from the last decade (and it was a great decade, just look at games like NEO Scavenger, Heroine's Quest, Frayed Knights, Grimoire, Expeditions: Conquistador, The Age of Decadence, or Divinity: Original Sin*), so I'm glad the author's making a new game. I hope he doesn't get too ambitious though, that can be a death sentence for any one-man project, and ALL was good because of how simple it was.

I kind of see your point, but indie RPGs tend to have more heart. More importantly they ooze a certain type of quality that you rarely see elsewhere in mainstream gaming. It's a quality that only those who enjoy video games can truly appreciate. Take for example Colony Ship. The developers go through painstaking detail of setting up the world, explaining how the colonists live, their history, how they eat, the factors that lead to the current predicament, the different factions - while also fleshing out their motives, and so on. As well as the complexity for working with different factions, scheming, backstabbing; including the consequences of it impacting the narrative. You don't really see this type of dedication within bigger field of gaming cause developers have to make compromises on their design in order to accommodate the lowest common denominator; this isn't me being pretentious, it's just how it is. An RPG with consequences that actually bite you in the butt wouldn't sell as much as an RPG that fulfills power fantasy which most people desire.

Essentially, what I'm trying to get at here is quite simple: At some point you'll tire of mainstream games. Eventually you'll seek unique experiences that you can't find except in indie developers who are constantly pushing the medium in interesting ways. So don't knock off that lone dev who's working his heart out while playing with a low budget.

Necromancer's Tale is the only game I'm looking forward to specifically because necromancy is rarely ever fleshed out properly, no pun intended. But it's a one-man game, so God knows how long that's gonna take.

Not even sure what you're trying to say. What does Workers & Resources, for example, a one man indie city building game, doesn't have that SimCity 2013 has? Always online component? 1000 DLCs? DRM? Niggers and trannies? Dumbed down gameplay? Triple the price? Your money going to Blackrock for them to buy the World? This example is representative when it comes to comparison between based indies VS anything AAA

Don't worry, you can always play as brave winged trans-lesbian gorilla in Overwatch 3 or purchase Ronaldo's golden sneakers for 99.99$ for him to be 1.2% faster in latest Fifa. Don't worry, there is enough shit out there made by yugeeee teams with yugeeee budgets, you'll never go hungry. Don't you worry

Also one man, or small team indies are making games with better and better graphics, and interesting art style. All thanks to technological development which is actually taken advantage of by them. Look at Colony Ship, Manor Lords or Monomyth. Preview shots of Underrail: Infusion look *chef kiss* - beautiful
