It's not an apples to apples comparison. For one, I don't believe those numbers capture 21 years of sales for the first game. More importantly, unlike Deus Ex, Human Revolution was released on 3 platforms with a large marketing push. It also had the benefit of being a sequel to a well-known franchise instead of a new IP.

The relative budgets and total size of the market was also vastly different 11 years later.
I'm just trying to point out how AAA publishers think. It is much less likely to be Deus Ex 1 it is more likely to be another Human Revolution title. Even if they do a remake its just going to be Human Revolution with a Deus Ex 1 skin because that's obviously what Eidos Montreal would do, they're not going to just throw away their technology.

valid however its not as high as you'd think though.

The estimation for Steam is around 500k-1M install base. So effectively a doubling of Deus Ex's unit sales - this is current.

Invisible War barely even registers at 100k.

Human Revolution (DC) is 1-2M - the base product is even higher however its an unreliable figure.

Mankind Divided is sitting at 1-3M

Those are current numbers that pretty much back up what Embracer are implying that Nu-Deus Ex has a higher number of sales. A AAA publisher will always preference continuing on a trend rather than break a trend. That said Mankind Divided was a disaster - but so was Invisible War and Invisible War provably was a bigger one. Also take a look at the uptick in numbers, it had probably its biggest surge when Deus Ex Human Revolution was released - this is because I believe the first game was included as a pre-order bonus.

I'm not sure the numbers from the sources posted at SteamDB are accurate, but even if they aren't and the game has sold 3 million copies in the last 20 years, that would be more likely the result of the game being discounted to $0.96 a myriad of times to the point it probably didn't make them as much revenue as even a $60 title selling 100K copies on release...

Deus Ex is such a mess on current systems and has some major unfixed bugs it could warrant an actual remaster (as in from original master files) with no non-bugfix changes (except maybe an option for PS2 graphics). Wouldn't be something to put Eidos proper on though.
Works fine for years via Lutris.
It's funny how Linux has become the defacto best way to play old Windows games.
Also best way to play new ones that don't have third party malware. Somehow Linux has a small, but appreciable, performance advantage over Windows for many new games (less than 4 years old). Not sure how that works beyond Windows being shit, but it does.

I can attest that I have a Steam copy of IW that I got for a few cents due to a bundle with the original. Barely played it because it's stupidly unstable. I suspect that's most IW sales.

Unfortunate but not surprising. 'Early in production, will be expensive to make' seems like the first thing on Embracer's kill list.

Full text of the article:
The Swedish gaming company Embracer Group AB is canceling a video game in the beloved Deus Ex series after two years of development and will lay off a number of employees as part of an ongoing initiative to cut costs, according to people familiar with the moves.

Eidos, the Montreal, Canada-based studio behind the game, will instead focus on an original franchise. The canceled Deus Ex project, which had not yet been announced, was slated to enter production later this year, said the people, speaking anonymously because they are not authorized to talk to the press.

The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Following a period of massive expansion during the pandemic, Embracer Group has lately been making widespread layoffs, game cancellations and studio closures.

The sci-fi Deus Ex series has been critically acclaimed and sold more than 14 million units worldwide. It was acquired by Embracer in 2022.

Lars Wingefors, the CEO of Embracer, will suffer eternal damnation in the mouth of Satan, between Brutus and Judas, without rest or mercy, for the damage caused to the world.

Embracer cancels Deus Ex game in development for two years

UPDATE: Eidos Montreal confirms 97 jobs lost.

UPDATE 6pm UK: A statement from Eidos Montreal has confirmed 97 jobs have been lost at the studio, following the previously-reported news that its Deus Ex project has been cancelled. The studio employed 481 people, as of 2022.

"For the last 17 years, our teams at Eidos have worked on some of the most beloved brands in the industry, combining deep storytelling and innovation into unique games," the studio wrote in a statement posted on social media. "We have created memorable multi awarded experiences that we are proud of and we know our teams members have put their heart and soul in all of them.

"The global economic context, the challenges of our industry and the comprehensive restructuring announced by Embracer have finally impacted our studio. The difficult decision has been made to let go 97 people from development teams, administration, and support services.

"We are working to support all impacted personnel through this transition. These very talented, highly experienced people are entering the employment market, and we want them to find their next projects and are helping to do so.

"As we navigate these difficult times, the well-being of our team is our priority and the continuous commitment to creating games that players will be able to enjoy."

ORIGINAL STORY 5.30pm UK:Eidos Montreal's new Deus Ex game has been cancelled by Embracer Group, prompting an unknown number of layoffs at the studio.

As reported by Bloomberg, the upcoming project had been in development at Eidos Montreal for around two years, following its acquisition by Embracer in 2022. The decision to call an end to this project was part of the Swedish conglomerate's ongoing restructuring and cost cutting measures.

Those who remain at the studio will now shift their focus to an "original franchise", Bloomberg said.

According to the publication's sources - who chose to remain anonymous as they have not been authorised to talk publicly about the project - the now-cancelled Deus Ex game was expected to enter full production later this year.

There were previously rumours a Deus Ex game was in the works, but the project was yet to be publicly announced.

Eurogamer has asked Embracer for comment.

This year has seen multiple other companies announce layoffs, including League of Legends developer Riot Games, Black Forest Games, Unity, Behaviour Interactive and Lords of the Fallen publisher CI Games.

Last week, Microsoft announced it was laying off 1900 employees across its video game teams. In an email sent around the company, Microsoft's gaming head Phil Spencer called this a "painful decision".

Meanwhile, earlier this month GDC published its 2024 State of the Game Industry report. Here, it said 35 percent of game developers had been impacted by layoffs in the last 12 months. Additionally, half of those surveyed said they are concerned more job cuts are on the way.

It's about time Embracer shuts down itself.

There was a 4chan post last week that claimed the new Jensen game had been scrapped but a Deus Ex remake (not made by Eidos Montreal) is far along in development and may be released later this year.

Do they even have anything else going on besides Coffee Stain Studios (Sanctum, Satisfactory) and Ghostship Games (Deep Rock Galactic)? What an absolutely shit publisher.
