Admit it: You are going to buy Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

Will you buy skyrim when it comes out?

I won't buy it but I'll torrent it. Anyone that actually gives their hard earned money to Bethesda at this point deserves to be slapped.

Maybe immersion means nothing to you, maybe you don't even know what this word means, but it means something to me. If I'm allowed to have an opinion that is, which I'm beginning to doubt.

I bet you don't know what a double-standard is, right? I mean, 5 year olds have opinions too. I suppose their opinions are just as valid as your own.

Bahahaha!

Daggerfall is way more inmersive than Oblivion... Still, i prefer Ultima Underworld.

Oh, and this:

For every shitty 2010 troll there was a poster who gave me a warm fuzzy feeling when reading their post. Same thing is happening in 2011

Clearly only your opinion is valid.

This same thread will happen again next year, except the posts will go something like:

I loved Morrowind and after that I couldn't wait for Oblivion. Man, was that game an ambitious but flawed gem. Got Skyrim the moment it came out and was, well, disappointed. Very disappointed.

My experience was very different. I started with Oblivion and it just consumed my life. I think I played it for more than a year, exploring and always discovering something new. I couldn't wait for Skyrim, but the gameworld was smaller and I was a bit disappointed. Still, not a bad game though. I downloaded Morrowind but it didn't run on my computer, although judging by the videos I didn't miss much.

"Buy"
Only reason I'll even bother torrenting it is residual goodwill/nostalgia from Morrowind and Oblivion.

Buy it? Never. Pirate perhaps if I become curious enough to experience how they can make a game shittier than oblivion.

Maybe I'll steal it, maybe not. Both TES games I have played were pretty boring after all. I'm not sure that there's any game I would like that involves mostly walking around and killing the occasional rat or pig.

I believe in immersion. While I certainly agree with you that graphics can add/detract from a game's immersiveness, good graphics are neither necessary nor sufficient to render a game immersive. Also, keep in the mind, your counterpoint to Daggerfall's level of immersion is (I presume) Oblivion, a bizzaro world of grotesques and Asshole AI (http://www.somethingawful.com/d/news/asshole-physics-meet.php).

In any case, I had a lot of fun playing Oblivion. It was a terrible RPG, but it was also comedy gold. Even excluding the hilarity, it was kinda fun for the first couple of days. But no, I didn't buy it, and I won't buy Skyrim either.

I agree, but I still think that this kind of self-praise may leave bad impression. ;)

This.

Immersion is essentially the feeling of being there. Graphics and certain aspects of presentation (FPP) and mechanics (RT) may help here, but those details are relatively unimportant as, as any bookworm will testify, plain text can be perfectly sufficient means to achieve immersion.
What is important is certain investment in the world portrayed and consistent application of broadly defined logic of the world portrayed by the medium which leaves the feeling of things clicking together and generally making sense. This feeling may be disrupted by various gaps and dissonances - for example due to typical bandit not being incapacitated by 20 arrows visibly protruding from his chest, no agriculture or characters mellowly discussing the pros of everyone knowing how to pick locks (not having to carry keys) against the backdrop of demonic invasion.

I'll buy it. For me, TES was never about having a great story, it's more about screwing around while going wherever you like whether over a hill (not being blocked by unopenable doors or chest high walls) or breaking into someone's house. I think it's a nice escape and fairly fun.

Details like all the samey voice actors and inane conversations of Oblivion or the wikipedia style conversation topics of Morrowind are simply beside the point just like PST or Arcanum fans think that those games' shitty combat is beside the point.

Hiking simulator or whatever, I expect Skyrim to be enjoyable for the same reasons the past TES titles were even if it's not a great RPG.
