If you ignore the cross-fertilization of ideas (which is a given in this kind of argument), then either continent could replace the technology from the other.

Most desktop computer tech is from US companies (Intel, Nvidia etc), but most mobile tech is from europe (e.g. everything in the iphone) and either could be cross-purposed.
