Arcanum Arcanum is, by far, one of the worst *games* I've ever played... emphasis on "game" and not "RPG"

discussion is mostly worthless as it usually revolves around two circlejerks throwing feces at each other and everything worth saying about most crap has already been said
Not everything worth saying has been said, I think. It's just that the quality of the debate depends on the quality of the participants. If too many of them are shit flinging monkeys who obviously have no senses for the qualities of what they have been playing, this gets reflected in their descriptions of a game and in their arguments.

not seeing the forest for the trees.
Exactly.

Arcanum is good for telling what kind of RPG player you are:
- "Inventory and pathfidning are shit, combat is unbalanced, 2/10"
or
- "The world is huge and original, the quests are varied, the story and writing are very good, 8/10"

i.e. you're an rpg player or an adventure gamer
Or perhaps a combatfag vs storyfag/immersionfag.

or perhaps an rpg player vs non-rpg player
If you are an RPG player who refuses to play a game because its combat is unbalanced or its UI is shit, then you shouldn't play any RPGs, hence you are... not an RPG player.

So I take it you are in agreement with me, that Arcanum is a good game.

Yeah, I'm in agreement with you that you're not an RPG player +M

So, from now on, if you want to know what kind of an RPG player Darth Roxor is, he would rather play a game with good UI and balanced combat, than a game with good worldbuilding and characters. +M

It's kind of telling how superficial your appreciation and understanding of games is when you essentially rate a game based on inventory handling and UI. I pity you because it is clear that you suffer from some kind of autism or OCD which prevents you from focusing on other things than the UI, or maybe you completely lack the ability to appreciate the rest of the game in other than a cargo cult sense. It's surprising that you choose to spend your time playing games when you do not understand what makes a good game, but thanks anyway for my daily dumbfuck safari.

So, when you see a list of 17 weapon X, 12 weapons Y, 11 things, 8 stuff, 6 craps, you automatically know what is in there on first look ?
You know everything about modern, medieval, cyberpunk, fantastic, or even original setting weaponry ? (amongs other things) Do you feel like going to wikipedia for each obscure medieval weapon you come across ?

Personnally, i find more efficient to see on first look what looks like an heavy weapon, a sniper, a knive, a flower and a glass of wine. You know it quicker and just grab what you need, instead of trying to remember which category which item belongs to, which name refers to what, or if 9 mm is a pistol or an assault rifle.

Lucas9 >

The problem with your Fallout 3 exemple is that you first have to spend some amount of time on a list of names (some clear, some confusing, some set apart, some similar), before getting said picture (a pictures that is very schematic, instead of looking like it is supposed to). What i prefer, is being able to actually look at my inventory, see my items for what they look like (searching through pictures), and pick what i am interested in (same for looting a body or a crate), and THEN, see the names and descriptions if i wish too.

Pictures being the tool for researching, at give you much quicker ideas of what the item fucking is, and skip the process of scrolling thousand of meaningless names.

Suddenly I remembered Nahlakh with its entire weapon dictionary of telwars and kopeshes. ;)

This faggot made me to play Arcanum again. Found my old save and finished Caladon sewers and Szabo ruins.

Arcanum's dungeons sucks.
Look here:
caladonsewers.gif

This place looks like typical uninspired sewer map. Easy and not confusing. Only it's not. Place seems huge because you need to scroll every three steps. Dungeons are devoid of any interesting features, poorly lit (even with upped brightness setting) and have shitty monsters inside.

Probably they look better in higher resolution. Off to the Dark Elves I go.

Ease of accessibility, conveniences and comforts; these are the things that define this new generation of ungrateful little shits. You know it when their opinions hinge on such trivialities to the point of redundancy.

It got this part of interface wrong or that aspect of combat broken and looks shit and whatnot. You are absolutely correct. I myself was baffled by how they managed to make such a mess of such and such.

But here is what: If your main concern while going into the game was those things and now you are coming here to complain about it, you are... well, not seeing the forest for the trees. Mostly, those are the things any game can get better and neither will raise an otherwise mediocre game to being good. Arcanum clearly had other priorities. It's no accident that the Troika logo forgoes "Art" and "Code" to settle on "Design".

If you couldn't catch onto the quality of world building, quest design, characterizations that stand out from among the entire computer roleplaying catalogue, you ought to review yor priorities..

This is the kind of retard that didn't even read the title or the original post or my first post on the thread. I don't talk about the worldbuilding or other things because I place those in the RPG category. I'm talking purely mechanics and certain design decisions (or lack thereof).

Can somebody really get that butthurt because of someone criticizing bad aspects of their favorite games? Yes they can. And here's another one!

If I lacked the ability to appreciate the rest of the game, I wouldn't be even playing it. I don't give a shit if I look cool for playing Arcanum or not, I play it because it's an interesting RPG despite its glaring flaws as a game.

But I understand the "muh shitty game mistaken for hardcore" sentiment a lot of people share in the Codex, cause we all know nothing makes you look cooler than saying "I play videogames from the 90's 99,99% of the population hasn't played".

As opposed to your contributions to this thread and, indeed, the whole forum.

This is actually a good description of your posting history. Now, while I don't have anything against you as a person, I have yet to see a single post of yours that was original in thought, insightful, funny, entertaining or generally memorable in any way, shape or form.
Instead, I could easily write a script for a bot to replace you that would respond in a dozen or so manners to people on the forum and no one would notice a difference. Here is a few samples of what you (shit)post 90% of the time:
-shitty arty images in the "post random images" thread
-quoting join date
-writing "who the fuck is [user name]?" when someone with a relatively new nickname and / or little or no reputation posts something you don't agree with
-blogging about food
-blogging about handsome guys you saw a moment ago
-whilst blogging, you will be overly enthusiastic and emphasizing seemingly MEANINGLESS words for NO reason to emphasize SOMETHING
-quoting user with the "butthurt detected" emoticon

There's probably a few more, but I can't remember any more atm.
Granted, as this thread shows, discussion is mostly worthless as it usually revolves around two circlejerks throwing feces at each other and everything worth saying about most crap has already been said, but it's no excuse for being a passive aggressive hypocrite.
You like to call others shitposters, but you are one of the worst posters I have ever seen. I mean you're not the dumbest poster or whatever, you just lack any personality in your posts, like a bot who has been programmed to believe it is not a bot.

You got him mayne.

This is OK for consoles, but on PC it looks like a Braille system. It wastes a lot of space and is very inefficient in scrolling or finding what you want. I definitely prefer Arcanum's inventory.

DarnUI makes it look much better, really. I can find my stuff easily (granted, with a carry weight of 150 tops it's easy to find shit as opposed to carrying 400lbs like other faggots do). An auto-sort for sorting things like skill books and so on would be great, though.

You are talking *purely* mechanics, the thing that defines the RP of G, but you don't talk about RP aspects of it because those are the setting and whatnot, and they exist in a vacuum seperate from mechanics.

Uh-huh.

It is clear you haven't got the slightest clue what you are talking about.

As for the title, it clearly says one of the worst. Now, let's be honest, you have got to be a spoiled little shit to call Arcanum the worst in any aspect, regardless of where the emphasis lies and the magnitude of poorly designed elements in Arcanum.

And you are only reducing yourself to a laughable dolt with your retorts, oh the lone thinker and defender of truth against the winds of nostalgia and whatnot. And talking about them butthurts. Teehee. This guy is a riot.

Uh-huh.

I'm talking the mechanics of the UI, the inventory (Jesus Christ, it's ALL in the OP, did you even read it?), things that exist there but aren't the gameplay per se (unlike combat, for example). I don't understand how this is such a difficult concept for some people.

God damn, I wonder how can you even play RPGs with that reading comprehension of yours.

I don't remember, at the moment, any game as infuriating as Arcanum. So yes, it is one of the worst games I remember playing, right there with PES 2014 (which also had a lot of troubles regarding interface, gameplay, bugs and lag).

Codex is a grindfest with a good setting and an entertaining story, that is why we endure the at times poor dialogue with shit NPCs.

The setting is not important in a RPG because it alwas ends up with you beating skeletons to death (sucks in Arcanum), going to dungeons (sucks in Arcanum) and exploring a world with its own rules (sucked for me in Arcanum). If you want a good setting than you shouldn't play RPGs at all.

calling the game "not an RPG", then going on a rant about the inventory and journal?

0/10 wouldn't read that shit again :rpgcodex:

Maybe you should read it again, but trying to understand it this time.

Arcanum is a great RPG, but a horrible game.

FINALLY someone decided to speak out against The Cult of Troika. Arcanum is terrible, it shouldn't be anywhere NEAR the Codex Top 10. Even South Park Stick of Truth has better combat. KOTOR has better combat. Sheer masochism is the only reason to replay Arcanum.

Now we need the same thing happen to Morrowind . Although Morrowind is not as deeply flawed as Arcanum .
