If the studio system is so awful, why do people not just form their own game development coops and produce quality content that they share all the profits of?
Probably because the average game developer has the talent of a wet fart and wouldn't be able to produce anything of quality if their life depended on it.
The big misconception is that "Corporate suits are coming in and stopping developers from making GOOD GAMES!!!" but generally designers get what they want. Every game now being filled with boring and extraneous crafting systems, empty open worlds, and lackluster mechanics is not because of some corporate mandate. The designer genuinely thinks it's a good design.
