The No Romance is the most based thing about this game and to be honest Obsidian could have easily added some shite romance to please the land whales ands sex starved house wives but they chose not to, which is based. This is why the game is at least worth a try.

Romances has been the bane of RPGs and has attracted the worst scum of gamers possible. Romances in any game will eventually lead the game to become something akin to veil guard down the line. No romances == Massive incline.
Well said brother.

DIfferent developers back then.
I'd argue that Pillars of Eternity was made by creme de la creme of Obsidian and we all know how that ended.
With a good game ?
I tried to find the picture of Sawyer's pathetic engraved watch (kicking myself that I didn't save it initially), ended up finding the saddest collection of old man selfies on the Internet. Enjoy!

Romances can be good, but for this they need to be integrated into the main narrative at a fundamental level, which goes against the shitty pick-your-waifu-and-lets-bang nature of the most of them.
I'd say romantic overtones with Fall-From-Grace in Planescape were well done and several romances in WOTR have been solid because they are intertwined with the story (Arue can attempt to redeem YOU in chapter 5, there's some path specific reactivity, etc.).

The biggest issue with modern Obsidian in that regard is that the studio is composed of talentless femoids and washed out has-beens at this point, neither can deliver anything in that regard.

Are these supposed to be 'beginning of my journey' and '6 months taking HRT' timeline photos?

Competent, not unique or outstanding. For a 'spiritual successor' to older games, they had to play it safe and they did so just fine. Difference being that it's more grounded than something like Forgotten Realms stuff due to Sawyer's autism (which is a positive for the game imho).
Pillars of Eternity 1 did good only because it was sold as the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate (so it got a huge credit of trust before the reality hit in). The direct successor to Pillars of Eternity (Deadfire) did so bad that Josh Sawyer decided to not direct Pillars of Eternity 3, if there would ever be an attempt at one. This came from the mouth of the guy whose brainchild Pillars of Eternity was (as a setting and mechanically). Why Deadfire sold poorly? I guess that's because PoE1 didn't capture the players and they roughly knew what to expect from PoE2.

My problem with PoE1?

They tried to create a fantasy world that was familiar yet different, but the end result was uncanny - there's always something irking me about it. The usage of made-up language that tries to make it seem foreign and therefore more interesting, but due to overuse feels pretentious instead. Or constant exposition dumps, because while attempting to make it a familiar setting it was not, and the writing wasn't great nor was it kept mercifully brief, which didn't help (it isn't as bad as Tides of Numenera, although it shares the same issues).

What about the system? It sounded good on paper, but in practice it was a poor experience. The character creation didn't feel unique and the actual combat was even worse (the disengagement penalty was a horrible idea in particular, considering how easy it was for enemies to close in), especially early on, when you don't have many companions. The overall result was very dull for me personally. And I think not just for me, considering how PoE2 sold after that (I didn't even bother buying it).

With a good game ?

Yeah I wonder where these issues may have came from. Certainly not from the army of retarded faggots who keep performing endless fellatio on Plaseshit borement wait... Unsurprisingly they show up in games built through crowdfunding, where getting the internet loudmouths to have a positive reaction is one of the key factors in keeping the hype and funding going. As a result, what came of it sucked, just like planeshit. REALLY MAKES YOU THOUINGK RIGHT?

I would add that there was also a poor management of the action economy. The game was designed like it was turn based but then made RtwP.

In hindsight it would have been much better for the game to have been turnbased because that is much easier to make and the creators seemingly had very little understanding of RtwP. This would also have enabled the game to sell much better on consoles due to RtwP being extremely awkward without kb&m.

Ultimately though i think gameplay is much less important that people here like to imagine. These kinds of games live or die by their narrative and worldbuilding and it was there the games failed to worst, with the good writers mostly leaving either before or early in the development of PoE1. If they had good narratives and companions people would have forgiven the lackluster gameplay. People don't love F:NV for the shitty creation engine gunplay.

(Worldbuilding itself though was competent.)
No it wasn't. It's either generic as fuck or based on the soy idea of religion

Difference being that it's more grounded than something like Forgotten Realms stuff due to Sawyer's autism (which is a positive for the game imho). The god stuff is the only big divergence, but it's the same sort of deconstruction as with MotB - difference being that they had no preexisting setting to limit the sort of divine metaplot that they could tell (and a comparison with KotOR2 is apt as well I guess due to MCA's presence on the PoE project).

Bioshock was a spiritual successor to System Shock yet it had its own identity and differed a lot from System Shock. So too was Assassin's Creed compared to Prince of Persia. It's only incompetence and complacency that made Obsidian think they have to play it safe with Pillars.

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
Is this game looking so boring that nobody cares enough to meme about it?
Not many people memed about the Outer Worlds either, some even enjoyed it. Even here, in these hallowed halls.

Those kind of games can reliably sort out real RPG gourmets from people who'd happily eat deep-fried cowshit.

Weird to hear that it sold 4 millions, I guess people will buy anything if it has guns on the screen.
People really wanted to stick it to Bethesda after F76 and it was a low season. Plus it was massively hyped by the woke media, at a time when this sort of hype still had some residual weight.

I'm already bored looking at the trailers of this game, it's also getting no marketing / hype. The game also cost in my region is 30-40% higher than most large AAA productions, wtf is this pricing?!

It's very likely a pass for me unless the gameplay is revolutionary (which it won't be). So no story setup as part of the teasers/trailers to rope us in, and I think my biggest problem is the game world / art-style just does absolutely nothing for me. I'm not a fan of the overly coloured art style primarily in the combat effects, ofc its got the trademark western studio drab boring asf ugly characters.. It's boredom personified into a videogame.

Why devs dont work with tone of original art for DnD like jeff easley + gore and nudity is what the people want, why even use the fantasy setting at all if you're going to play 100% safe space for all all audiences etc?
