Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
Outer Worlds were relatively successful for two reasons only:

- people wanted to stick it to Bethesda
- nothing else was going on in that release window

Without those two factors the game would be lucky to drag itself over the 100k copies sold line.

I finally realized what this game reminds me about. A fucking Underworld Ascendant. Aesthetically, they are like 1:1 match, the same oversaturated cartoony aesthetic with a vomit of purple and greenish colors. It's especially obvious when there's any skeleton on screen.
It may be oversimplifying it a bit, but I feel the same way. And the same way Avowed is (probably) going to measure favourably against Underworld: Ascendant, it's going to measure unfavourably against Monomyth. You know, the game made by one guy. In a reasonably comparable timeframe.

DIfferent developers back then.
I'd argue that Pillars of Eternity was made by creme de la creme of Obsidian and we all know how that ended.
In a pretty good game that was brought down by internet hivemind insistence that planeshit borement dialogue is something people want?

The No Romance is the most based thing about this game and to be honest Obsidian could have easily added some shite romance to please the land whales ands sex starved house wives but they chose not to, which is based. This is why the game is at least worth a try.

Romances has been the bane of RPGs and has attracted the worst scum of gamers possible. Romances in any game will eventually lead the game to become something akin to veil guard down the line. No romances == Massive incline.

Why is combat so slow? Jesus christ.
That and mobs tend to patiently wait until you turn to them so they can actually start to hit you. It looks as an action game for decrepit or retards. Even fucking Skyrim was more dynamic.
I haven't played the second Pillars of Eternity game yet. It's in my backlog and I may or may not play it someday.
It's a decent build-fag game actually.

Nope. Everything about the game was either incredibly average or outright sleep-inducing.
I replayed it last year and I was shocked how good the writing felt today, when we're neck deep in the vegan diarrhoea tinged with hair dye, estrogen and rank incompetence that's the modern AAA video game writing. It was like a blast from the past when Obsidian devs still knew what they were doing, albeit just barely.

Could've used fewer sawyerisms tho. I like my games without lagufaeths and vithracks, thanks))

It's rather jarring when you go from the first game to the second. The writing in the first game is just dry; in the second everyone sounds like a Twitter user.

They nuked a god. Nothing soy about that.
"Gods don't exist, therefore we must invent them" is a non sequitur concept.

(Worldbuilding itself though was competent.)
Yes and not just that. Even nuances like words flowing and sounding nicely, competently, creating an appropriate atmosphere, free of modern degeneracy and lingo like "err... so I'm non-binary" and "I'm pulling a barv".
Codex Revisionism + There's nothing "flowing" and "nicely sounding" about either Welsh or "fampyrs".

The very unmemorable setting did PoE1 no favor. Despite its flaws, Deadfire was much more enjoyable.

Anyway, PoE 3 is a game that I probably would have bought, whereas I've never felt the slightest interest in Avowed.

Yeah obviously the writing is better then nowadays woke garbage but at the same time it was a total decline compared to Mask of the Betrayer, Kotor2, NV and AP. And considering that Obsidian was THE storyfag company at the time everyone expected way better writing, lore and characters. So one step forward, two steps back.

No it wasn't. It's either generic as fuck or based on the soy idea of religion
Competent, not unique or outstanding. For a 'spiritual successor' to older games, they had to play it safe and they did so just fine. Difference being that it's more grounded than something like Forgotten Realms stuff due to Sawyer's autism (which is a positive for the game imho). The god stuff is the only big divergence, but it's the same sort of deconstruction as with MotB - difference being that they had no preexisting setting to limit the sort of divine metaplot that they could tell (and a comparison with KotOR2 is apt as well I guess due to MCA's presence on the PoE project).

In other words: Kwanoids did what they always do with their European heritage: Turn it into bombastic nihilistic mundanity.
