https://rpgcodex.net/forums/threads/avowed-final-previews.151906/Any links at hand?Just saw a bit of the newer videos for this thing. They should've waited before, this looks leagues ahead of that first set of videos and actually looks like it could be fun. That first set of gameplay videos from months ago looked like complete ass.
They're both Unreal Engine games.I wish they stuck with Outer Worlds graphics. This engine switch doesn't bring anything worth losing performance over. I'm tired of new games running like shit, good enough graphics is good enough.
Why would skilled programmers work in game dev, crunch near deadline and risk to be fired when the game flops if they can earn more $ in IT, fintech or military and enjoy benefits/social security instead of risks? The people that can develop engines aren't working at game companies, there isn't money in it for them.
Yeah, Avowed is UE5 which is either much more demanding or more difficult to optimize. And the visuals are not even that much better? They're both Unreal Engine games.
Irespective of others bias, what's wrong with the game from your perspective?Roguey and Infinitron are in full shilling mode. They are either coping hard or are a true obsidian fangirls.

Yeah well, that's one way of seeing it. I don't quite agree. Have you seen (some) of the previews that Infinitron linked a bit earlier? Of course I am not trying to convince you of anything but maybe give them a shot? It's basically fantasy outer worlds.
There isn't enough A for action nor R for RPG.

Agree, wondering if we will ever see future products cater to the "classic" audience? We're not the target audience anymore and that's okay. Let's see if the modern audience, or at least those that survived Veilguard, will be good to this one.
= being fired first.Even a lot of the better developers in the industry are cowards who perpetuate it instead of putting their foot down.
2 years from junior to director - nepotism pipeline.Berto Ritger is Avowed Region director, employed as an area designer in April 2022, promoted to senior in April 2024, probably promoted to director recently.

I like Obsidian and I want them to do well.
But here are two key pieces of evidence that this game will be cringe:

Yes, they're called indie games and they're made by autistic shut-ins who haven't played a new game since 2001 (they didn't care for it).Agree, wondering if we will ever see future products cater to the "classic" audience? We're not the target audience anymore and that's okay. I've noticed over the years, that the even numbered DirectXs are the worst ones. The odd numbered are the good onesAn additional reason why games run worse now is DX12

John Carmack code is pretty clever and well written and he had huge impact on development of 3d graphics. Judging from his 'manifesto' concerning Facebook 3d headsets development, he had not found working there all that fulfilling. Why would skilled programmers work in game dev, crunch near deadline and risk to be fired when the game flops if they can earn more $ in IT, fintech or military and enjoy benefits/social security instead of risks? The people that can develop engines aren't working at game companies, there isn't money in it for them.

Of course I'm not suggesting that he should apply for a job at Obsidian.
What am I shilling for exactly? I'm expecting another solid Safesidian mediocrity.Roguey and Infinitron are in full shilling mode. They are either coping hard or are a true obsidian fangirls.
I don't think they should work in game development at all. It's better for skilled programmers to make their money in a tech field, and then create the games they want to independently as a side hobby or in retirement. Why would skilled programmers work in game dev, crunch near deadline and risk to be fired when the game flops if they can earn more $ in IT, fintech or military and enjoy benefits/social security instead of risks? The people that can develop engines aren't working at game companies, there isn't money in it for them.
The problem with this approach is that it takes 5 years to release ultimate 8-bit game, and a decade for 16-bit dream game.I don't think they should work in game development at all. "[combat] while it definitely has a little jank and awkward animation here and there, combat feels more impactful than it looks which is hard thing to convey over video"
This guy is fucking retarded. If it's hard to convey over video, how the fuck will I feel it differently in a VIDEO game you fucking soap muncher? Is the game shipping with a full suit of armor you gotta play it dressed in?
