Baldur's Gate #BaldurGate: Siege of Dragonspear

In the third chapter of the game now. Will write some more impressions once I've finished it. Few comments about the game and the SJW.


There first thing that happens is that there is a refugee crisis in Baldur's Gate. Of course, that has absolutely nothing to do with the current refugee crisis in Europe, right? So you talk to guards and have the option of telling them to be more inclusive and treat the refugees nice and all that, while they are causing a ruckus in the street.

Were these refugees raping the townspeople? Did the major of the town suggest giving the refugees courses, like "Rape is kinda bad peeps, here is how to have sex with townspeople in a more tasteful way", while advising the women townspeople to dress conservatively? Just checking how accurate it all is presented in game.

As you and someone else said earlier, keep that fucking RL shit out of games.

The icing on the cake is the smugness of the writers (or at least one of them). How they are going to "fix" the game, purge "sexist" and "racist" stuff and so on, but on the other hand you have this "dank mey meys", the "isn't that a strange name IN A FANTASY WORLD?" and dialogue like that of the stoners. You wanted to show you are better writer than the previous ones? You failed horribly. This is mod level writing.

Yup. I don't care either way for tranny cameos in games (although I see zero reason for them, just like I see zero reason for jamon serrano references and I do love jamon serrano), but it's really funny how "professional" companies let such things go public. I mean the statement where the writer in question literally says that there was a lot wrong with BG and she's (they're) here to fix it. This coming from a team whose original content so far was absolutely horrible and the appalling writing was definitely a big factor in that. I guess you don't have to be a PR specialist to know that this definitely isn't a message you'd want to send, especially for a game that really rides the nostalgia bike. It just makes you sound like a smug cunt and people gonna get angry. Not to mention that it puts you in a very vulnerable position when the time comes that the actual quality of your product can be judged.

You can murder a whole bunch of them (at least the ones who stole your money) and be a general asshole to them. Comparing them to the crisis in Europe is inevitable, but a bit far fetched. If refugees show up in any game from now on will they be a commentary on situation in Europe?

I'm more pissed about preachy undertones in dialogues. Even when talking to folks who stole your money they speak in IMPORTANT LESSONS. It's shit writing, cause (from their point of view) it is perfectly viable for them to defend themselves with communism - they way it is worded is out of place.

Well I decided to make another character to see what this story mode is (with no intention of playing it) and when I start the game, lo and behold my character sheet:

Note: I dumped STR and I now have 25 STR because of Story mode. I also have Invulnerable, Negative Plane Protection, Protection from Poison and Resist Fear. It's not enough to have 25 STR but I can hit anything with the THAC0 I have.

I decided to go on a murderous rampage through Candlekeep. I wasn't trying to get achievements but anyway these popped up.

Because it should "stay there." This is fantasy and all of it is about adventuring (or Adventure!). Sexuality should come only when it's important like brothels, romance or some religious/political shit. Not like "WHAT A STRANGE NAME IN FANTASY?!" "WHY YES! I MADE IT MYSELF!"

I don't like what I've seen of Carrie Patel's writing. Even if we give the writing in the game a pass because of the "everyone worked on everything" argument (which I don't really buy, but whatever), I read her PoE novella, which unlike the game's writing was not first draft, supposedly, and I still didn't like it. It's just that she isn't good enough in drawing characters, they seem too thin for comfort. Still liked the other novellas, but hers felt distinctively at a high-school level of writing, like a teen who has no experience in how real people reason, form motivations, and act on these motivations. She may yet develop a style and understanding of people, but not "in 2015".

Amber Scott seems like a David Gaider disciple, which is the worst I can think of saying about a game writer, but that's just for now. I will issue my heavy judgement on her after I've seen more of the game's writing.

WTF? I just went back to my current Dwarf Fighter (Legacy of Bhaal difficulty) game and it's changed the difficulty to Story Mode!

It's just that she isn't good enough in drawing characters, they seem too thin for comfort. Still liked the other novellas, but hers felt distinctively at a high-school level of writing, like a teen who has no experience in how real people reason, form motivations, and act on these motivations. She may yet develop a style and understanding of people, but not "in 2015".

Apparently reloading reduces the difficulty level sometimes, so you have to check after reloads
