Nah, this doesn't really work as an excuse. For more than one reason.
For one, the game currently doesn't even have a controller UI or a console version confirmed, being exclusive to PC and Stadia. We still know they are coming at some point but they are out of focus right now and hardly a compelling justification.
Second, a M&KB control scheme that would work better and a controller UI that would stick to their stupid system are NOT mutually exclusive.
Case in point: that's pretty much what Wrath of the Righteous does. It controls basically like DOS 2 if on a controller, but uses a classic "RTS-like" control scheme if played with mouse and keyboard.
Do I really need to stress the difference in budget between WOTR and BG3, and why if Owlcat can afford to do it any excuse from Larian in that sense would be pathetic?

Anyway, only now listened to the update. The SWARM AI seems amazing. At 1h06m
My greatest complain about the game ie - lots of low level enemies with a lot of hp that are a chore to fight is now addressed. Since I'm only listening as I'm at work at moment I din't saw much the UI, but the UI also seems to have improved a lot.

I've played the game up until Grymforge (I skipped the goblin dungeon, though), and to this minute I've only encountered one example of this "swarm AI". Not sure if it's a good or bad.

A few minor disappointments:
1) The windmill gnome doesn't react in any way to you being a deep gnome. Other deep gnomes don't have this problem, so maybe the voice actor was unavailable.
2) Sergeant Thrinn is hyped up to be a gnome-hater by the welcoming party at Grymforge, but she also doesn't seem to be treating you any differently.
3) A bard can help Volo with rhymes in the goblin camp. It requires two successful skill checks, but even if you succeed on them, the eventual result is still the same, you don't even get an inspiration or exp for it.
