Waterdeep used to be a setting in many D&D related stuff back in the day, mostly to exploit its path into the Underdark and those evil, terrible, extremely sexy drow priestess.

Important: used to be. Now it's idealised San Francisco
til Waterdeep smells like shit
Maybe I get older, but I liked its shit odour more when Waterdeep had hookers and coke.

honesty in advertising
Are you saying Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 dishonestly advertised themselves, because they weren't entirely set in the city of Baldur's Gate?
at least for BG2 that case could be made, I think
Maybe Legend of Zelda also dishonestly advertises itself, since you don't actually play as Zelda most of the time.
it's almost as if video games don't always live up to their claims ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The entire Realms of Arkania series is aimed at hardcore RPers, the ones who care more about learning dancing or becoming a jester than combat. A game set completely in a city will probably be aimed at the same audience and will be difficult to sell to the wider audience who cares mostly about combat.

If all of the city they featured in pics is an open world, that's truly impressive, especially if they fill it with content. I hate their writing in previous games, and their companions in this one are some of the worst and most detestable I have seen in an rpg, but on the technical side this is one the most ambitious AAA releases in the last few years.

I'm as optimistic about this game as anyone but don't be an idiot, man. They already said the city is split into three loading zones, there's going to be Rich Part of Town, Regular Part of Town, and Poor Part of Town maps that will each be medium-sized and have some stuff to do but nothing crazy. Like every other RPG ever. The only cool thing is the potential for some emergent gameplay relying on character abilities - stuff like wildshape or teleport has never been simulated properly in a city environment that I can recall. The idea of walking around something like the city hub from Deus Ex: Mankind Divided with the ability to become ethereal or shapeshift into a bird or what-have-you sounds fun.

I thought they said in the presentation that the city would be a seamless open world.

"It's been about 20 years since we last had a pint in the Elfsong Tavern or crawled through the sewers beneath the city streets and, as you might have spotted during the PC Gaming Show, many of these locations are back, and many news ones are waiting to be discovered for the first time - giving you a chance to explore the menacing roads of the Outer City, the opulent estates of the Upper City, and the dark alleys and pubs of the Lower City."

These are three separate maps/loads.

This game would have been instantly better if it were in the Greyhawk setting.

I would love to see something other than Forgotten Realms (Blackmoor, Mystara, even Eberron) but Larian is naturally fitting to FR. Without Wizards oversee it would be more brutal, sexy and crazy, but generally that its their place.

How did you deduce that these are 3 separate maps, there is not a word about it.

'"[Swen] said, like, can't we just connect everything?" reminisces World Building Director Farhang Namdar. "And that was an interesting day."

What's come out of that decision is something we’re very proud of. The districts of Baldur's Gate are now three seamless open worlds.'

PC RPG Website of the Year, 2015 Make the Codex Great Again! Grab the Codex by the pussy Insert Title Here RPG Wokedex Divinity: Original Sin 2 A Beautifully Desolate Campaign Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag. Pathfinder: Wrath
Why is nothing ever set in the Dalelands? They seem like a pretty good canvas for adventures, not too detailed in their description, rife with quest hooks.

Sleazeballs work because they can glad hand and on the surface keep relations level. No one's going to call them a liar to their face because they're powerful/useful. On close inspection they don't have good character, but to the average layman they are charismatic. Not to get political, but a guy like Trump values gaudiness and other emotional arguments to persuade. He's obviously effective in that sense. Pimps, too, are good leaders, dress provocatively, and keep folks in line.
I don't think there's much point in having a discussion about a character we really know nothing about, but FWIW these are things that matter less in a pre-mass media society.
The modern angles are obviously prevalent to the modern day but the same principles apply in different arenas, if anything showing that he's ineffective as a character. Trump would do fine without the internet because he can rile people up, I don't think Gortash has the gravitas to get a Twitter poll running

The discussion is about how the character is portrayed from what we've seen so far, and from what I've seen so far he's a Final Fantasy villain. Knowing more isn't always a good thing, especially with Larian's token quality dip and quirky writing craze.

Bioware built their style by ripping off jrpg tropes and styles and it's no surprise that the whole thing comes back with BG3 having a scruffy middle-aged guy as a villain figure

Turnip prices are going up. This means excellent profit for turnip lords.
