I've been furious at Larian ever since the very first gameplay stream revealed that this was not the Baldur's Gate 3 that I've wanted for many years.

XCOM was released before DOS1 and was probably more influential on the mass market. There are plenty of other examples. Nice try, though. Actually, you can compare this directly. How many games look like they are actually aping the particulars of DOS1's turn-based combat? I can think of 0. XCOM? I can think of many that seem like straight up clones.

Well, I just have to disagree, man. I still haven't seen a single scene or quest or anything in BG3 that holds a candle to the metric shitton of homosexual perversion in DAI.

The bear sex and maybe Karlach (if it's a tranny) is about the closest it's gotten to that. Everything else, especially the gameplay, is by FAR incline compared to that train wreck of a game.

"Gather the 6 items to do x" over and over just so you could go on another errand for your literally gay party members that get forced on you at the start of the game. Nah. I'll take BG3 all day and just avoid the Astarion x Bear scene.

That's fine, but disagreement doesn't make one's views ludicrous. I admit we often can do this to each other on the Codex when we have firmly held opinions. All I can say is personally I have found the decline infinite, and it is remarkable how what used to seem the depths of misery becomes in 5 years time not as bad as it used to look, because the new thing is even worse.

I'll admit a lot of my butthurt with Larian comes down to change more than it does the particulars compared to, say, Bioware. I expected trashy dialogue from Bioware after decades of decline. Larian just pivoted from DOS1 to DOS2 massively by completely changing their writing staff. It reminds me somewhat of the Fallout 2 to Fallout 3 transition. When something you used to like is gutted and you have new people wearing the skinsuit of the old thing it is really jarring.

Imagine all the good computer software could have done if it was developed in a way that benefited brain function. Like those kid learning games we messed around with when we were kids, but far more advanced obviously. Yes, and this is half of why I still defend Larian. Because I remember that time well and the level of difference between FO2 and 3.

Go back and imagine for a minute that it was Larian making FO3 instead of Bethesda. If the worst we got back then was bear sex, but still got turn-based combat, super mutants that weren't big yellow orcs and no towns being nuked and simply transforming into ghouls, it would have been PARADISE by comparison. Even having it be top-down would have at least been SOMETHING.

When Bethesda remade FO3 and turned it into an FPS, that meant that all future Fallout games would be FPS's. He killed the franchise for the fans by making it an entirely different genre. Not to mention that the BG sage was already over. There was nothing left to cover unless you made it a divine campaign somehow, and no one but Beamdog was likely to do that.

It's one of those "is it really that bad?" scenarios. I just don't see it as being that bad, since I've seen much, much worse.

Also seems to me by that standard BG3 DOES kill BG as a series? Like, personally I like turn based and wasn't highly attached to RTWP, but if you were a fan of BG 1 & 2 for mechanics, then BG3 DOES permanently bury that legacy.

The saddest thing to me about this is after DOS1 & and when DOS2 was in development and they were first previewing the dungeon master mode, I found myself saying, THIS is the studio who should develope a new D&D game/a new NWN. They have the mechanics already nailed for D&D, they just need the license. If only I had known they'd do it in such a way I'd find it completely despicable. The monkey paw curls... that being said, the issue is really deeper than Larian at this point. It is D&D itself being unrecognizable as someone who first played with it in the 80s and 90s. It's a bit unfair to heap that all on Larian's shoulders in a day and age where dungeons are wheelchair accessible.

the problem with bethesda "Fallout" wasn't that they took 2 and "remade" it. they literally just took oblivion, made some fallout-esque assets, slapped a half assed vats system ontop and rolled with it. hence oblivion with guns.

The FA2 to FA3 transition is the same as the bear fucking in BG3. In a FA3 you are forced to engage with the FPS gameplay and in BG3 it’s impossible to progress unless you fuck a bear after each quest. Same thing.

To clarify, I am using the funny meme as a standin for the writing in general. I played BG3 on a torrent when the EA first released, and was immediately turned off from the first storybeat from the writing of the companions. Really has nothing to do with the bear stuff in specific, it's just an easy allegory for the deeper issue. When every character I run into that I'm supposed to want to party up with makes me want to kill them--really, EVERY one, I didn't find a single one I found tolerable in the brief time I played--you just have to accept you have irreconcilable differences from the devs as to what is "fun" or "believable" and move on.
