The practices of those people varied massively by nation though, asceticism and/ or abstinence was a common theme in some religions but there are also plenty where cannibalism, loose sexual morals (shared women and open homosexuality) and human sacrifice were present. People in the past weren't any wiser than us, they were adapted to their specific environments and made rules that worked for them.

Nobody denies the retardation of certain religions and abuses but I would wager religion had a net positive impact on society, especially compared to where we are headed now.

Man and society needs some form of moral code and spirtuality to fill the void and defeat nihilistic tendencies, religion was the solution for that. What do we have now?
