I agree, missing isn't fun, that's why you strive to raise your attack bonuses so you miss less...

I think it's more of a perception problem. Increasing your hit rate from something like 50 to 70% isn't obviously visible, so instead of seeing that your attack is too low you think your rolls were bad and you'd win if they were better. Which is true, but not the main point of the excercies. It probably goes double for the general public.

Hey, that article confirmed you'll be able to control your party so it looks like it'll be more Dragon Age Inquisition than Dragon's Dogma.

In other news, I popped on over to Lilura's blog and learned how 5e removed stat penalties from races
Dragonborn
◦ Strength +2, Charisma +1, Draconic Ancestry, Breath Weapon, Damage Resistance.
Dwarf
◦ Constitution +2, Darkvision, Dwarven Resilience, Dwarven Combat Training, Stonecunning
Sub-races: Hill Dwarf, Mountain Dwarf, Duergar.
Elf
◦ Dexterity +2, Darkvision, Keen Senses, Fey Ancenstry, Trance
Sub-races: High Elf, Wood Elf, Dark Elf (Drow)
Gnome
◦ Intelligence +2, Darkvision, Gnome Cunning
Sub-races: Forest Gnome, Rock Gnome, Deep Gnome (Svirfneblin)
Half-Elf
◦ Charisma +2, Two other ability scores +1, Darkvision, Fey Ancestry, Skill Versatility
Half-Orc
◦ Strength +2, Constitution +1, Darkvision, Menacing, Relentless Endurance, Savage Attacks
Halfling
◦ Dexterity +2, Lucky, Brave, Halfling Nimbleness
Sub-races: Lightfoot, Stout
Human
◦ All ability scores +1, Extra Language
Tiefling
◦ Charisma +2, Intelligence +1, Darkvision, Hellish Resistance, Infernal Legacy

If you think half-orcs can't be just as smart and halflings and gnomes can't be just as strong as any other race then you are a bigot. Pillars of Eternity had stat penalties, so this makes Josh Sawyer more of a race realist than the 5e guys (insert FreeKaner meme here). :)

I'm quite sure this isn't the first confirmation that you'll be able to control your party, but this doesn't tell us much. You know, you can in theory control your party in Dragon Age, but do you really need to... this still tells us very little about the gameplay.

We've known there will be party control from the start, I think. The discussion was more along the lines of how, especially when co-op is involved. They can do it like in DA, you click on the portraits and you directly assume control, and you only control a part of the party in co-op. Like D:OS.

First: Why did you go to Lilura's blog if all the informations are available for free in the 5E SRD? Could it be that you are stalking her? Don't get me wrong FxF is OK with me, but try not to be creepy.

Second:
Only if he puts also gender stats penalties then he is fully redeemed.

no stat penalties for core races. Full blown orcs get their -2 int. Arguably, half-orcs are better than both humans and orcs. Eugenics at work.

It's incomplete, human variant gives you one extra feat. Drows have massive disadvantages in light and some bonus in darkness. There's still several race penalties and advantages . Also roleplay solves it all, you can make some races as unwelcome as you wish them to be when you DM.

All ability scores +1 and one extra feat for humans means you can min-max more, though. It essentially gives you +6 more points to put into the stat which most benefits you and faster access to prestige classes. There's a reason everyone picked that one trait in Fallout which gave you +1 to all stats. It depends on how useful the other bonus things half-orcs get.

Steve gets a Kidney but I don't even get a tag.
Remember that feeling of gradually getting more powerful as a melee character in BG1? Finding that first +1 sword that didn't break (they put weapons in that broke Sven), and how it hit just that little bit more often. Then you got your first +2 longsword that hit even more often, and did more damage - but you had to kill a real bastard to get it. Later on you got some gauntlets that simulated melee weapon mastery, but it's unlikely you had a single warrior that could have won the duel without help. Then much later in the game you beat a little brat of a religious nut who hit like an ogre - and it turns out she had a particular belt. And from that point on, you had 18/00 STR and everyone better watch out - especially once you got DUHM. But you still had to be concerned about rolling a 1.

All those trials overcome from starting out as someone who may have had decent strength to begin with, but still had to be concerned about missing and getting critically 1-shot in return if you were arrogant enough to charge in melee without help...

...Yeah well, you're probably not gonna have that kind of experience in BG3 because the developers think missing is dumb.

Probably not. "Fun" is held hostage in the Endless Paths of Josh Sawyer.

Swen, the breaker of chains, will escape the dungeons of no-fun-allowed and terminate the cycle.

He and his Button of Awesome +2.

All too good. Man, that was no fun at all. BG 1 was such a bore. I mean ... goblins could wipe your party. Where's the fun in that? You gotta slice thru goblins illithids like a whiiiirlwiiiind oooof dooooooom!

This is all marketing research, though, they've told him what people like and that's what he's doing. These statements are to appease people who actually follow developments and know about BG's existence. This isn't targeting us, I'm starting to get the feeling it isn't targeting anyone who'd read or hear these interviews. It's kinda scary to think about how large the silent majority is and how many decisions are made to accommodate it, not only in gaming but as a whole. Well, Swen probably hopes there's a silent majority who is going to buy the game, which is very fabulously optimistic of you, Swen.

I think it's better to reveal that it's going to be Dragon Age: Baldur's Gate early, so people can calm down a bit before the actual release. Keeping it under wraps for just before release is a terrible idea.

I wonder how many players thought they got lucky with their characters, when in reality it was that hidden "can't die in one hit at level one" mechanics that protected them.

You mean in games other than BG1? Or did that mechanic apply on less than normal difficulty settings?.

Lilura Deep Gnome and Duergar aren't core races, they were added in supplements.

All ability scores +1 and one extra feat for humans means you can min-max more, though. It essentially gives you +6 more points to put into the stat which most benefits you and faster access to prestige classes.
You don't get both +1 to all scores and a free feat. There are two Human options:
Human: +1 to all ability scores, free language.
Human (Variant): +1 to two unique scores, free feat, free skill proficiency, free language.

Well... you can think of any plus scores your race doesnt get as a stat penalty.
And its not like in DND games you dont find equipment that can boost any stat anyway. Or buff them by magic and other ways. It is cheap but its nothing critical or crucial.

and ive a feeling its going to be the least of problems.

I'll give you halflings, but given that half-orcs don't get any bonus to intelligence, they CAN'T be just as smart as gnomes, who get a +1. (Or tieflings or humans if they have the + in that stat.) Removing penalties doesn't completely level the playing field between races; they'd have to remove bonuses also to do that.
