Forgotten Realms don't really have a strong aesthetic personality as a whole, you must choose which region you want to concentrate on and adapt the artstyle to fit that. It would be very easy to do something unique for Thay for example, but Baldur's Gate the city is as generic medieval as it gets, you have to concentrate on motifs and color schemes maybe.
I like the artwork of BG 1 and 2 in particular, Baldurs Gate isnt over the top fantasy and more late medieval style with fantasy touches, this is good to make things relatable. It had slightly desaturated colours and an earthy tone on the colors that with the Ui that many times resembled old paper and stone, those things made you feel you are dealing with an down to earth world and made the fantasy elements stand out more. The interesting thing is that this style made even fantasy looking buildings look realistic and avoided that dreaded Disneyland look that many fantasy works have. The dude that chosen the art style for BG 1 and 2 knew what he was doing.

Indeed, and that's what many of us want, instead of this mobile Disneyland fantasy shit all games are going for this days.

The whole "Adversary" angle seems a bit too obvious, though on the other hand I suppose not many people interested in the game know much about Forgotten Realms lore, especially concerning a topic as marginal as mind flayers.

If we are on the quest to remove the plot device, then I expect Vampire Spawn players to have to face the drawbacks of playing as one.

In before you learn to "control" it and use it for even more superpowers mid-game.

"When an illithid undergoes ceremorphosis, it can occasionally take on some elements of the absorbed host creature's former mind, such as mannerisms. This typically manifests as a minor personality feature, such as a nervous habit and/or reaction (e.g., nail-biting or tapping one's foot), although the process that determines the type and number of traits so inherited appears to be stochastic. An adult illithid has even been known to hum a tune that its host knew in life. Usually, when a mind flayer inherits a trait like this, it keeps it a closely guarded secret, because, were its peers to learn of it, the illithid in question would most likely be killed. This is due to an illithid legend of a being called the Adversary. The legend holds that, eventually, an illithid larva that undergoes ceremorphosis will take on the host's personality and memory in its entirety. This "Adversary" would, mind and soul, still be the host, but with all the inherent abilities of an illithid."

It might be that the Illithid that infected heroes is the adversary (he killed all his brethren on the ship), not PC.

I've been reading very contrasting opinions when it comes to the size of the old games' fanbase. On one hand, there are those who claim they are a significant chunk of potential buyers, and possibly alienating them is not the best idea. On the other, I've read several opinion pieces arguing that they are a small, very vocal minority, and Larian Studios is making the correct choice in changing up the formula to fit a more modern audience.

Why not both? I imagine that both groups are fairly large. I don't really think Larian needs the BG fans, divinity+d&d is probably sufficient to generate enough interest.

I suspect that the Adversary is actually the mind flayer piloting the nautiloid in the intro sequence. He's infected the PC and the rest of the party with specially bred tadpoles that gives them superpowers instead of turning them into mind flayers, to advance his inscrutable agenda.

Plot twist. He is the Bhaalspawn who becomes the Adversary due to his powers. His real name : Abdel Adrian.

Yeah imaging people bringing their nostalgia about Baldur's Gate in a game called Baldur's Gate 3. Totally unreasonable.

People can have as much nostalgia as they want. Lord knows I'm filled with nostalgia for tons of stuff. Difference is, I don't judge my newer games based on nostalgia for the older ones. The only thing that matters, at all, is how much I enjoy BG3 as its own game. The fact this is a divisive opinion is example 1,562 of humanity's tendency toward retardation.

Sounds interesting, but in the cinematic intro we see bodies of other mind flayers in the chamber. If anything, it looks more as if he broke onto the vessel.

You're too quick to facepalm/shit this post, guys, it's not without a grain of truth, actually, even if it was an irony (some people tend to fuck each other very quickly). Which doesn't dismiss a huge point above about resources and doesn't override the fact that making every companion to be bangable regardless of her/his gender is beyond ridiculous (unless it's a porn game).

Thing is, the size actually didn't matter (in this case). Here their producer explains it, and I think he's fairly honest.
"It was never really a question," Design Producer David Walgrave says. "We've been doing turn-based for a while now. We're pretty good at it. Dungeons & Dragons is turn-based in itself, so it makes a lot of sense. Even after we implemented the Dungeons & Dragons ruleset, the result was so different from what we concocted with Divinity: Original Sin that we saw that the combat designers would have to do it completely different, so that was a challenge. And we're doing things that we haven't done before, so for us it was the best choice."
There's nothing limiting the engine to 4 party members. Plenty of user-made modules use more, and there's mods to enable more in the base game.
But what about simultaneous session by 6 people, is it easily possible as well?

The Adversary is an already existing character though — Strom Wakeman. He's the canon character that wrote The Illithiad, he spread the rumor of The Adversary to make the mindflayers paranoid.

The majority of buyers of any game are casuals. Most gamers don't go on forums like everyone here does, maybe they'll go on Reddit but even that is still a minority. It's always more profitable to appeal to casuals. These are people that don't care a ton about learning the mechanics or even what the mechanics are behind the scenes. So what you've heard is true, most of their buyers won't care or even know there's something to care about. If advertising is good they'll see a game that looks interesting from pr releases or metacritic and buy it. The only thing hardcore gamers are good for is posting guides and builds and helping the casuals when they go online to seek help. On this forum I see the same 20 people posting while their game will sell multiple millions. Their numbers won't be affected, gamers just don't care.

Don't get me wrong. This game will still be decline but that's not what effects sales.
