Hahaha, I don't want to talk about that yet but I promise that you will enjoy the character creation process.

It's a party based single character game dude, the party members are part of your character's build and so depending on which members you generate you have different stats. It's like having some old black dude follow you around saying "don't do that, that's 5 to 10" every time you think of breaking the law.

Party contains: Wise old blues-guitarist (+5 to street smarts), stank ass hobo (-5 to diplomacy but +3 to intimidate), and your younger cousin Joshua (find random items on ground but suffer 10% accuracy for having to keep an eye on the little shit).

Or something.

Probably something.

Which city in Quebec is your artist from?

Give my regards to my compatriot.
Haha, it's that identifiable, huh? He's from just outside Montreal. Almost half the people on the team are from Canada and Brian and I have seriously considered moving there for work.

You know . . . I am Canadian and demand money. Move to Canada and give me money (through employment)!

I saw his French name and recognized where he was from right away.

I also know that there is another studio from Montreal which specializes in pixel art games, they released Wizorb, and they had a successful Kickstarter for a Metal Slug clone. No clue if he worked for them.

Sure there is lots of game studies in Montreal due to the ridiculous tax breaks, but it's mostly grunt work for low pay under bad conditions among gigantic 100-300 men teams on generic AAA megaproductions, so I'm not sure it would be that enticing to you.

Once again, Quebec is the sweat shop of North America. Some things never change. There would be no AAA industry without it, which is troubling.

kinda slowing down
We have nearly 200% of our goal. We could not possibly complain. Things slow down after the first week.

I'm not sure he's ever worked with them on their commercial titles, but he's good friends with them. He's also good friends with a lot of the dudes at Bioware Montreal, including the the senior designer on Mass Effect 4, who just happens to be a big fan of Barkley. He was apparently pretty surprised when he found out Frankie was working on Barkley. Frankie's actually streaming right now a bunch of the old games we've made together that are going to be in our $60 reward tier.

Pay? Grunt work?!

. . . How do I join?
If you're actually serious about this, email contact@talesofgames.com with some more info, but this isn't nearly as glamorous as it sounds. I know it looks like we have a lot of money, but we're going to be living on less than minimum wage for the duration of this project. We're hoping the "payoff" comes when the game is actually out. The real payoff is that we get to make our dream game, but if we actually make any money that's just a bonus.

Please add some sidekick character like Morte, Barkley definitely needs someone to argue with. Obviously a flying robot skull would be good idea :)

Looking at the pictures of Barkley 2 it reminded me instantly at The Chaos Engine. Will the combat / weapons be like that if you know the game cboyardee?
Aaaaaa sorry for the late response. Been very busy, was hoping this announcement would be even bigger but it looks like we'll have to wait a little bit longer.

The combat itself is mouse driven (think Soldat but topdown or Crimsonland but with an emphasis on more strategic combat than killing hordes) but we're looking at Chaos Engine specifically for area design and how it handled having good enemy encounters on such a small screen. Combat is pretty different, because in Barkley you have 360 degrees of movement whereas in Chaos Engine you have just 8, but there is a lot of overlap in the general premise. The gun's system (the apostrophe is intentional!) is a lot like Borderlands' though - gun's have a (huge) number of parameters that are randomly generated when you pick them up. The idea is that you get really crazy combinations, like machine gun's that shoot ooze or automatic rocket shotguns or all kinds of stuff. There are also going to be unique gun's that have their own effects, but we're really excited about the flexibility of the system we've got now. ALSO, we announced a stretch goal tonight about sharing gun's between friends. If we reach this goal, we'll be able to give gun's seeds and let friends share their gun seeds, which could potentially be really, really cool.

And before you ask why we're using Borderlands' gun system, we thought it up before Borderlands was even announced! The core Barkley 2 idea has been around since 2006 at least!
