I understand the idea of freedom and doing whatever you want in TES games, but it's interesting that this whole max-out thing is one of the very few aspects of the game, where TES fans don't give two shits about realism, as long as they can be supreme rulers of the galaxy, and enslave mankind.

Anyway, I've always had a beef with the Elder Scrolls' broken skill system, like with the levelling up and stat crap, but worse yet, the downright silliness to make a system based on usage, and then not have it react to non-usage.

Skill decay would add a lot to that system. You could have varying decay functions (so that, say, your majors would never fall more than ten or so points off of their peak no matter how much you neglect them, while miscs would crash) which would add more weight to character development (not to mention adding a sense of time to the game, which was really missing in Morrowind). I can understand why they don't have nerd-porn character development systems like skill trees or 3E D&D feats of which hard caps would be reminiscent, but inevitable ubarization isn't too interesting.

I don't know, it could get frustrating. You stop training for a few days and oops you suck. It would be nice if the decay would be caused by raising other skills, and the worse the skill the more decay in it. This way you would shape your class during the entire game. Something like:

You raised your 'sitting' skill. Is the sum of all your skill points greater than teh_ultimate_cap ?

No? Ok.
Yes? Well, then for each skill except the one that was raised do the following:

Skill = Skill - (1 - Skill/SumOfOtherSkills)
plus some correction for negative numbers

You could completely change a class in this system if you would want to, but it would take some work and you couldn't be good at everything at once.

Exactly! A key aspect of MW's suckage was the way they idiotically decided to completely remove the effects of time. Daggerfall had timed quests, guild reputation and rank decay, seasons, blah.

Morrowind had no time effects whatsoever. Not even mother-freaking npc schedules. Someone ought to point out to Team Toddling that making a 'timeless game' means making it really fucking good, not literally creating a gameworld that's some kind of bizarre stupid void of unchange yer big bananas

Obviously it should be much slower than that. Going from "great" to "sucks" should take a really long time. Decay should be slower than advancement. there are many layers on how you could do this realistic.

Ok, but couldn't you be a Jack Of All Trades if you trained all your skills frequently enough? Some people go from dungeon to dungeon, some like slower exploration of the wilderness. I'm not sure if this system could be balanced for them all.

you can be jack of all trades, but not master of all trades. Just like real life. Obviously I would suggest a system where it is harder to keep really good without continous training and where basic training can be kept for a long time. Balanced? Of what consequence is that? The only balance needed is that someone trains hard at something will be better than someone that does not. Someone that does like slow exploration will enjoy his game even if he doesn't become über as fast as someone doing his best to max out as much as he can. you don't become the best by slacking.

I don't like that idea...
I hope I can hold my max. on everything I've trained.
That's a good idea for an extremely realistic game, but I kinda like having all my stats at 100
"IMO" it would completely ruin the game. I for one LIKE to be able to learn a skill I was at first not good on later in the game and not have my other skills go back to 0 when I want to use them again just because I decided to play with something different for a while.
And, the best:
Let's go forward. Not back-wards.

#9. More Jiub Than You Can Shake a Stick At

Remember Jiub? He was the guy on the boat who asked you your name and said a total of maybe five fragmented sentences. Everyone agrees that he was the most lovable and three-dimensional character in Morrowind. TES scholars have come to a consensus that he was the real Nerevarine and you were just a pawn in his masterfully played game. The player should be Jiub's sidekick in Oblivion. Hell, maybe the player should just ask Jiub his name in the beginning and watch him save the world.

Hah! There's so many levels of satire to that one. It should have been #1. Extra points for the Tap reference.

Soil erosion helps immerse you in the experience

I suppose you'd like mountains that look like rolling hills like in Morrowind? Red Mountain was really imposing wasn't it? Soil erosion allows for realistic surfaces.

This sounds like an im passe then, I personally will simply download a mod for the nine divines and I don't see the absence of spears affecting my experience at all, whereas soil erosion and good voice acting (from Patrick Stewart or otherwise) will greatly immerse me.

-Oblivion characters look like sh#t, see the uncany valley

I've always liked the Uncanny Valley theory. Makes a lot of sense. Wikipedia Link

Terribly irrelevent, but I had a question about the uncanny valley theory. In the wikpedia entry, it used zombies and prosthetic hands as examples of objects that evoked negative responses for being "too similar" to a human. But how about fantasy creatures like Tolkien elves, sprites, the rusalka, etc? They seem closer to human than "humanoid robot," yet I don't believe they evoke negative emotions like the theory would claim. Is it because they are past the trough?

While the theory seems interesting, it seems terribly subjective and dependent on the example you use. (C'mon, a CORPSE?) And I would argue that Spirits Within failed not because the characters had no visible perspiration, but because of fundamental problems in the plot.

Likely, if the theory is true. If you want to continue in the Tolkien genre, consider the hobbits' reaction to Gollum. They were particulary repulsed by him because what he most resembled was a corrupt, twisted version of themselves, which would plop him squarely in the valley. Tolkien's work is full of examples, elves->orcs, ents->trolls, humans->wraiths.

As for an individual response to a corpse, I don't know if the theory is really meant to apply. With most social theories, you need a large sample size.

i hate you :P
mounts MIGHT be available, shields would be nice, spears are just another type of weapon.
to take armor off dead people is so NOT GOTHIC. and the churches thing too. and about the spells : i think all the makers have to do is balance it out a bit, and finetune to have most spells suited for most people. this is GOTHIC Gothic remember, not The Elder Scrolls Gothic. i agree morrowind had a lot of nice stuff that i too would like to see implemented in gothic, but the goal of gothic is not to make another oblivion. its to make a game with this gothic feel we all love so much. don't forget that my friend.
From the Gothic III forums.

I can GUARANTEE that Oblivion will blow your mind the first time you see it running and actually PLAY the final game, and it will continue to do so for many months and even years afterwards.
...
And what's wrong with that?
