Procedural generation is great for game development because it gets you something that's almost all the way there. Rather than wasting a designer's time, they can get right to work on things that designers are better at than computers.

    What's Todd's codex username?

Also, I'm always surprised at how well TES game sell on consoles. You can make an argument for Skyrim being dumbed down and targeting consoles, sure, but Morrowind being the second best seller on the Xbox? That's not something easy to explain. Nobody thinks of RPGs or RPG players when they think of the Xbox.

RPGs were p. big on the Xbox. There were Fable (third best selling game for the console after Halo and Halo 2), KotOR and KotOR 2 (both were Xbox exclusive for a very short time), and Morrowind. The Xbox 360 had much better selling games, but Mass Effect, one of the most famous RPG of that generation, was an Xbox exclusive. I remember a friend of mine who preferred the Xbox over the playstation specifically for its RPGs.

I bought an xbox just to play morrowind because I couldn't afford a computer. Bought game 2-3 times too (1 or 2 to include expansions).

Morrowind’s popularity on XBox has always been baffling to me as well. It had a nicely modular UI, but I can’t understand how anyone would be able to suffer through navigating it without a mouse.

As a kid I used to play RPGs on my father's laptop without a mouse, using only the trackpad. When you are young and inexperienced, you don't need comforts to enjoy videogames.

True. I remember as a teenager playing Quake 2 on a trackpad when it first came out. I don’t think I had played a game using mouselook at that point though.

Microsoft is betting big that they can get 100+ million subscribers in the next few years. They're trying to emulate the Netflix/Amazon Prime model. I'm sure the price point is not going to stay at $5/month or whatever it is now.

It already costs $10 (or $15 for the "premium" account) each month. If you keep your account for an entire year, it covers the price of (at least) two major titles on that alone.

Yep. Getting people to subscribe to shit for what looks like a stupidly low price and betting most of them won't bother to unsubscribe is a mainstay of American gouging. This is not a new idea.

You also have to remember that consoles still have physical releases of games, this is also a step to ease players into going completely digital and furthermore getting tied up to their service. Once that is done then they will remain there. By making the next big Bethesda game an incentive they will attract a lot of people if it isn't a huge flop. So Starfield is now a game pass flagship. So goodbye Gamestop and hello Microsoft being in charge of the storefront. When they have enough users they will make a lot of money on this venture. This is their shot at getting it right, as Google and Apple did.

On the xbox the UI is altered a bit so that each window takes most of the screen space and you "flip" between windows as if they were pages in a book:

    (More screenshots here)

AFAIK you use the dpad to move between items and the map screen has a cursor you move with a joystick (Skyrim does the same). I haven't played Morrowind on the xbox (never had one) but it doesn't really sound that much different than what you'd see in more recent RPGs with gamepad friendly UIs.

IMO it'd be nice if that UI was also (optionally) available on PC too when you want to play with a gamepad since it isn't like the game is a twitch shooter, you can easily sit back and relax while playing with the gamepad. From a quick search it looks like OpenMW developers are working on adding this on the PC too which is great.

Frankly it's BS without weather /weathering and you get none of that, else they could just resell it every few months . Check the dutch horizon game presentations, what they use generation for instead is strict assessment of workload -same with CDP stuff afaik .

Why? Bethesda managed to create something cool and beloved from the IP. You would have preferred for it to be dead and burried? You know, no one forced you to play Bethesda Fallouts, you could pretend they do not exist if you hate them so much.
