characters, dialog... how will they ever succeed with that?

Nigga please. There are action adventures for this shit. Let an RPG focus on being an RPG for a change.
I'm not asking for a quality novel in the game. I'm asking if they would be capable to write something that won't distract you (because it's so bad).

They don't have to. All the classic oldschool RPGs they are ought to simulate did just well enough without characters and dialogue. And when they did bother to write a line or two, it was awful nerdy fanfiction. Name, job, bye. Good times.

Looks nice, but we all know looks don't make a game. We'll see if anything good comes from this.

Anyway, I am cautiously optimistic with all these "classic-style" RPGs popping up from everywhere. Sturgeon's Law says 90% of them is going to be crap, but we should still have fun with the remaining 10%.

but...
So, they butchered JA because turn-based combat is outdated and no one plays it anymore.

Now they come up with a "turn-based fighting system that will put a smile on the face of every fan of traditional RPGs"?

WTF didn't you use the turn-based fighting system of Jagged Alliance which put a smile on the face of every JA fan?!

I read somewhere that in JA BiA's code you can fin traces of plenty of non implemented features...
If it's true that would tend to show that they had at least some ambition.

Anyway graphics seem gorgeous...

BiA isn't that bad -- the attachment to Jagged Alliance hurts it more than anything actually in the game. (Patched, non-demo version.)

And it's pretty fucking rad for a company to take the money they made off that game and turn it into a fantasy, turn-based RPG. That's not the usual decline we see in the progression of a company's product line. It looks good. I'm excited to see what they do with it.

Sounds good. Too good. I am instantly suspicious.

I don't mind the co-op part, remember that Baldurs Gate 1 + 2 both had 6 player co-ops. It's probably just to attract some dweebs from the MMO crowd, nothing wrong with that as long as the single player experience is unaffected.

Regarding the screenshots, the landscape ones are ok, save they are too low rez. But the character/monster models are awful. Diablo II monsters looked better.

Hey there, I've just registered here to answer some of your questions. I am one of the guys who is currently developing (in my case: programming) the game Chaos Chronicles. In contrast to games we'd developed before, this game is our own project and we are free to talk about it without any control of some hesitant marketing/PR people. And my mission is to find people who share our nostalgia for classical party-based RPGs from the 80s like Pool of Radiance for example.

So they'll use the same arts assets to produce 2 different games: old-school TB for PC, and pope-a-mole for consoles?
No, we don't develop any other RPG beside Chaos Chronicles. Our webpage is actually pretty out-of-date and someone has to fix this ASAP.

Привет мать, the cooperative multiplayer mode will simulate some kind of pen&paper session, that means every player has his own character(s). We have no intention to create some kind of MMO game. In fact, during the last ten years we became totally bored with any kind of MMORPG (that's one reason why we started this project) . Our focus concentrates on a classical party-based tactical epic singleplayer roleplaying experience like Pool Of Radiance, Phantasie, Bard's Tale or Wizardry (and that's already enough work for us).

And finally: our devblog went online: www.chaos-chronicles.com
In this blog, we are writing about traditional computer roleplaying games and why we are trying to revive this genre (because it's clinically dead sinceTemple of Elemental Evil). We want to pick the best parts of all those legendary RPGs to create a new homage with state-of-the-art technology and graphics but with 100% classic gameplay.

We would appreciate any kind of feedback from RPG Fans and since the game is still under development any kind of (constructive) feedback will find its way into the game.

This sounds too good to be true. Best of luck, although, I'm a bit sceptical.

What stage of development is the game in? Do you have a design document done and are now implementing it? Can you share some details on combat system and/or character system? Is the combat really TURN BASED (ToEE) or some shit retards tend to call turn based (Baldur's Gate).

I don't want you to say something you aren't supposed to (and you really shouldn't be describing stuff that you dream of having in the game without any basis in reality, Molyneux style), but give us some insight in the current state of the game.

Also, is the game fully 3D (like NWN) or a mix of 2D backgrounds and 3D characters (like ToEE)?

Judging by the very little info and screenshots, this project looks absolutely awesome. Seriously, those are some of the nicest screenshots I've seen. It looks and sounds exactly like what the evolution of top-down CRPGs should have taken. And you guys seem to have the best intentions judging by the website. This looks extremely promising; I'd put it up there with Wasteland 2 in my level of hype. I hope this turns out as good as it sounds.

By the way, there is a alpha demo impression I found here: http://www.nisute.com/2012/08/15/ch...iving-the-old-school-pen-and-paper-style-rpg/

Another common theme in pen and paper RPG are riddles and puzzles, which will be prominent in Chaos Chronicles. from simple puzzles such as finding three amulets in a mansion to more complex puzzles that will span entire areas.
The developers have confirmed there will be two games modes: hardcore and insanely hardcore. Coreplay is going for a niche audience but wants this audience to be challenged to the point of breaking. In harcore mode, if one of your party members is lethaly wounded you can carry him to the nearest town to heal. In case he dies, there is still a chance he can be revived by taking his ashes to the nearest town. By invested gold and having a bit of luck the character can be resurrected. In what the developers called “insanely hardcore” you will not be able to resurrect squad members. But it goes further than that, the developer plan to only allow save point in towns. So no saving during dungeon, which will greatly increase the challenge to possible extreme levels.
:yeah:

Hi Marsal, we are currently in Alpha state. The turn-based combat is our biggest construction area at the moment because it's also the most important part of the game. We will write more about the combat system in future blog entries, for now I can say that we've played many D&D pen&paper sessions lately (mostly 4th edition).

Obviously, the combat will be similar to previous D&D games like ToEE or Pool of Radiance but with few (minor) changes. One improvement will be some kind of "swarm unit" (a pack of minor Goblins for example). This swarm unit will move simultaneously as crowd, but every single monster still has its own path and position on the board. We added this crowd system because our aim is reducing the duration while the player has to wait for AI turns. Watching 30 kobolds while doing their moves in Pool of Radiance was pretty annoying.

Another change will be the hexagon board (hexgrid). We had serious discussions about that (and those were very rough and loud !) because our hardcore D&D people didn't want their square grid go. At the end, we decided pro Hexagons because the directional alignment and distance calculations feel more natural than on squares.

As I already mentioned earlier, soon we will publish blog entries regarding the combat including first screenshots.

But meanwhile there are already topics on the blog concerning other gameplay elements like travelling on the worldmap - your opinion about those elements would be appreciated as well!

The game is fully 3D, all environment assets, characters and even the worldmap are 3D graphics. You can rotate the camera (and zooming by some degree) while exploring dungeons or fighting in the turn-based combat. While you walk without any grid in exploration mode, the game automatically switches to a turn-based mode as soon as a combat starts.

And most important for us: you can see all items and equipment on your character in 3D.

Before I get insanely hyped and give you all my money, let us clarify some things:
1) will it be pure turned based, like in ToEE?
2) how does the combat system plays out? are you using your own system or something based on OGL?
3) how many characters can your party have?
4) are these characters created or will you meet characters that can join your party? will these be dead on the inside, or will they have their own personality and agenda (eg: may even betray you)?
5) from the screenshots I can see the game is isometric with fixed point of view, correct? will you be able to zoom in and out?

(I have yet to read the blog. Will do tomorrow... feeling kind of sick and have to go to bed)

edit:

6) will there be any major plot line with several side quests, or is the game an endless dungeon crawler?

Sure bro, you're definetly pushing all the right buttons and saying all the right words to be a Codex golden dream game, just ignore the random trolls and welcome. ;)

By the way, I tottaly agree with the worldmap concept posted on your blog. Apart from the ones you metioned, I think Fallout manage to give that "huge world" feeling very well. The time limit for the water chip in Fallout and some other quests meant that trips had to be planned, you coudn't just fast-travel back to far away cities just to get ammo or a secondary item... and even stuff like going to The Glow felt special just on how far they were.

The rest of the blog is very interesting too, it's great to see there are still developers that know and value that kind of experience, and even more, are making a game with that in mind! I'll definetly look foward Chaos Chronicles. :)

Our webpage is actually pretty out-of-date and someone has to fix this ASAP.
Especially the 9998 release date... or that's true?

Share some details on the character system. You won't be using DnD, so what do you use then?

Before I get insanely hyped and give you all my money, let us clarify some things:
1) will it be pure turned based, like in ToEE?
Yes, the combat is turn-based but in contrast to ToEE it takes place on a hexagon grid. The exploration (moving through dungeons until the next combat takes place) and travelling over the worldmap is real-time without any kind of grid.

2) how does the combat system plays out? are you using your own system or something based on OGL?
Our combat system will be significantly influenced by D&D, D20 and Goldbox SSI games like Pool of Radiance (Stinking Cloud ftw!)

3) how many characters can your party have?
5 or 6 (+ 1 NPC slot)

4) are these characters created or will you meet characters that can join your party? will these be dead on the inside, or will they have their own personality and agenda (eg: may even betray you)?
You can create your own character(s) from the scratch with dices and you can recruit existing characters in the guildhall. Furthermore you will meet character who could probably join your party. Characters of the last category will have their own agenda and ... secrets.

5) from the screenshots I can see the game is isometric with fixed point of view, correct? will you be able to zoom in and out?
It's fully 3D and you can rotate and zoom the camera (zooming will be limited though)

6) will there be any major plot line with several side quests, or is the game an endless dungeon crawler?
Yes, there is an epic main story and we don't have any kind of random content, every item and dungeon is designed by hand.
