Share some details on the character system. You won't be using DnD, so what do you use then?

At this time, I can share following details about the character system:

Classes: Fighter, Warlord, Paladin, Cleric, Wizard, Rogue, Ranger, Warlock
Attributes: Strength (STR), Dexterity (DEX), Intelligence(INT), Wisdom (WIS), Constitution (CON), Charisma(CHA)

As you can see, our gameplay will be purest classical roleplaying from the time of the first computer RPGs. We have no intentions to create something new regarding the gameplay or regarding High Fantasy Worlds. Kung-Fu Pandarians (introduced WoW lately <- WTF) or other crackbrained "innovations" of modern MMORPGs will not be part of our game. D&D is our religion.

This just really appears to be too good to be true. Seems like a godsend but recent years have taught me not to believe such bullshit. Will postpone my admiration until gameplay vid or something more substantial.

Shit, doesn't work. I'm aroused.

If this is for real and not some sick practical joke like JA:BIA I'm very interested.
I can't tell any details about our previous project JA:BIA since it has been a work for hire production, but both projects are totally different in every way. Chaos Chronicles is our own project and the last years we worked hard (i.e. commercial games) to get a chance to realize it. JA:BIA has been initiated by a publisher who acquired a well known brand (Jagged Alliance). That's all I can say :)

Fuck C&C in this game. There is a time and a place for everything. I want to kill shit good along with great character customization. Maybe a good story and some cool character interaction.

I like all the different kinds of RPGs, but this game seems like a ToEE-crawler with a story. The surest way to fuck up your RPG is to go beyond your scope.

True as fuck, although it may hurt many. Can't really remember when I had so much fun with a game than with ToEE. This is not a thread about AoD but the direction it went killed the whole fun part for me. This, basing on the scarce but very promising info from the devblog, seems to have a heart in the right place.

Sounds too good to be true!

HobGoblin42: You say the ruleset isn't D&D, but the classes you listed are the classic classes of D&D4e, especially the warlord and warlock, which are not present in Pathfinder or any other rpg. Why is this? If you are making your own rules, why copy D&D exactly? Why not have cool classes that D&D doesn't (in core anyway) like Dark Knight (aka Blackguard aka Anti paladin) with cool abilities, and stuff like that.

Note, that is not reinventing the wheel, you can still have your classic classes like Paladin and Fighter, just that these 'cool' classes will make your product stand out and attract more ppl, maybe get better reviews and increase sales while still providing the same tactical gameplay goodness.

What's the magic system like? Will there be a warrior-mage (gish) class?

Do you have a rough release date in mind?

While I would appreciate some odd stuff to add flavour, like a Valkyrie or Blackguard, creating cool classes is a thin line to walk...

And honestly, I don't think that having a cybernetic egyptian dog as class helped Sacred 2 sell more... :P

Yes, the combat is turn-based but in contrast to ToEE it takes place on a hexagon grid. The exploration (moving through dungeons until the next combat takes place) and travelling over the worldmap is real-time without any kind of grid.

Our combat system will be significantly influenced by D&D, D20 and Goldbox SSI games like Pool of Radiance (Stinking Cloud ftw!)

5 or 6 (+ 1 NPC slot)

You can create your own character(s) from the scratch with dices and you can recruit existing characters in the guildhall. Furthermore you will meet character who could probably join your party. Characters of the last category will have their own agenda and ... secrets.

It's fully 3D and you can rotate and zoom the camera (zooming will be limited though)

Yes, there is an epic main story and we don't have any kind of random content, every item and dungeon is designed by hand.

you're saying all the right things...

:bro:

Is the party system set to stone? Wouldn't it be possible to have 3 generated chars + 3 NPCs?

Regarding the zoom and taking into account the current screenshots, it would be great if you could zoom out a bit more, so that you can have a strategic view of the battlefield, or even the location you're exploring.

And will there be a pre-defined camera? The reason I'm asking is because sometimes the rotatable camera becomes a pain in the ass.

I'm no D&D expert or anything remotely close, so take this question with a grain of salt... But was there any reason for going with your own D&D system, instead of going for Pathfinder's OGL which is free?

will you be using any kind of reputation system in respect to characters or factions?

and any ETA for the game? Q1/2 2013

I know where you're getting at but I still have to disagree on this.
I'm not saying C&C would be mandatory (because I'm sold already), but it can make the difference between allowing for 1 playthrough or 10... besides roleplaying.
It doesn't have to be some deeply intricate, complex and bug prone thing. I would be happy with the type of choices that results in different endings with corresponding slide shows à lá FO or ToEE.

Most important is for them to not rush anything.
And with the KS thing, if they're running out of $$$ then it would be a possibility to guarantee the best game possible.

And yeah... also wishing for a nice story and character interaction.

For the lazier ones (and also as a note to myself), some interesting snippets from the blog entries.

Therefore in Chaos Chronicles you’ll explore a whole continent that has been overrun by the forces of evil centuries ago. You will explore the ruins of cities and experience both hints at their former glory as well as find out the details of their downfall.

If Ultima gave us a world to explore and Pool of Radiance gave us tactical turn based combat, the AD&D ruleset and the sense of wonder carried by strange NPC encounters, Wizardry gave us the feeling of accomplishment for surviving every single step of the way.
...
And this is what we want for Chaos Chronicles as well!
(good bye, casual mainstream target audience).

But the thing we wanted for Chaos Chronicles here was that a class or its skill actually was necessary to solve a puzzle. So you would have advantages of having a wide spread of characters in your party that is not just focused on combat.

bitComposer announces Chaos Chronicles

- The classic role-playing game is coming out in 2013 for Windows PC -
Eschborn, August 13, 2012: bitComposer Games is announcing Chaos Chronicles, a classic, turn-based role-playing game (RPG) for the coming year 2013. The game is being developed by the Munich-based studio Coreplay, which was also responsible for Jagged Alliance: Back in Action. The fantasy RPG will be available for (Windows) PC.
Chaos Chronicles leads PC gamers into a lost empire full of legends, thrilling adventures, and dangerous opponents. Players can explore numerous ancient ruins, mystical places, and mysterious dungeons alone or in a group of up to five players. Chaos Chronicles unites the typical characteristics of classic turn-based role-playing games with modern graphics and a gripping atmosphere. The sophisticated gameplay will captivate veterans of the genre as well as newcomers.

About Chaos Chronicles
Over 200 years ago the flourishing kingdoms of elves, dwarves and mankind were consumed by chaos.
Undead hordes lead by archwizards of the dark arts overran
the land. Only few were able to escape. The survivors build their new homes on small, secluded islands off shore.
A few years ago the Order of the Holy Flame sent its knights to lead an expedition to the mainland.
Even though the old cities lie in ruins and orcs, goblins and other creatures of evil roam the land there seems to be hope for a return to the land of their ancestors.
The big harbor town Rethgard has been purged of the undead and the inner city has been fortified to stand ground against any kind of attack.
Driven by their love for adventure the player’s party enters a boat in order to take part in rebuilding the kingdom.

In many ways Phantasie might be one of the most influential games for Chaos Chronicles. Most of all what we want to achieve with Chaos Chronicles is that sense of wonder and exploration through a world. Finding books, scrolls and tomes that hint at a large treasure hidden in a dangerous dungeon or revealing the tale of the location you are exploring. If we do our job right you will be looking through the world of Chaos Chronicles until you have revealed its last secrets!

As a small developer we are not really interested in filling a world with things that the player might just skip through or pass flying over. We want you to do your own travelling from one town to the next. We want you to have some sense of vastness that invites you to explore! There is this small path into the woods that strays from the broad and comfy road you are travelling on. Might be worth exploring! Maybe you will find the ruins of a small village that surely holds some treasure.

And an interview here: http://www.nisute.com/2012/08/15/ch...iving-the-old-school-pen-and-paper-style-rpg/

If you’re a fan of class RPG and enjoy a challenge this is definitely one to look out for. There is no release date yet as the game is still in alpha, but it will be released on steam somewhere in Q1/2 2013.

Absolutely astounding, the screenshots looks fabulous, the art direction is superb in this game. Finally something with style something not cartoony and world of warcraft like. But more important than graphics the classic references and design choices announced , this all good, like a messiah of rpgs. I dont see anything to add , they know their classics , they obviously know how to design a game or at least what a real rpg is, and thats already really a lot nowadays.
I hope its not just a sick and cruel joke , like announcing exactly what we want and throwing in some fake pictures, or something that will be shelved like bg3 , van burren and such.

our previous project JA:BIA
How can you live with yourself?
Oh, my! Didn't realize they are the same guys. Are you going to pull that shit with asking fans if they prefer RT or TB, than do as you like, again? Or maybe skip that step this time, HobGoblin42? In b4 RT with pause.

No matter what bullshit excuse you come up with (it was the producers fault, waaa), as far as I'm concerned, you don't get any good will or benefit of the doubt. I suggest Codex stops all coverage of this shit, as they don't have any gameplay to show. It's all just plans, stories and "good intentions" and we all know what happened the last time. Don't be naive idiots and let them use you for cheap promotion.

:mob:
When they commit to TB and show us the combat gameplay, then you can proceed to :bounce:

We decided to take those classes because they cover the set of classes of traditional CRPGs very well. Since the player is fighting against evil hordes, there is no playable evil class like a BlackKnight/AntiPaladin available. D&D (first edition) was the root of most CRPGs and when in doubt we are going the same path.

What's the magic system like? Will there be a warrior-mage (gish) class?
No, we have Wizards and Warlocks with magical firepower and Fighters, Paladins and Rogues with advanced melee skills. The cleric will have few magical attack spells as well, but those are specialized on fighting undeads. We will not offer to mix or combine different character classes; you choose your class on character creation and that's it. Fortunately, as party based RPG you will have up to 6 character slots to fill :)

Do you have a rough release date in mind?
First quarter of 2013.

Yes, you can use the default camera setup which works fine in most situations. But sometimes you maybe want to rotate the camera to get a better view, especially when it comes to ranged combat.

I'm no D&D expert or anything remotely close, so take this question with a grain of salt... But was there any reason for going with your own D&D system, instead of going for Pathfinder's OGL which is free?
I guess the reason is very simple: we are not very familiar with Pathfinder, but with D&D and traditional CRPGs. And Pathfinder is inspired by the same roots, so I think the look&feel of the combat and character system in Chaos Chronicles will be similar.

will you be using any kind of reputation system in respect to characters or factions?
Yes, just one example: the party can accomplish quests from the local townhall to clear Goblin camps nearby. After that, the citizens of that town become friendlier (which results in better prices and new city options) and the travelling in that region safer.
