  • Welcome to rpgcodex.net, a site dedicated to discussing computer based role-playing games in a free and open fashion. We're less strict than other forums, but please refer to the rules.

"This message is awaiting moderator approval": All new users must pass through our moderation queue before they will be able to post normally. Until your account has "passed" your posts will only be visible to yourself (and moderators) until they are approved. Give us a week to get around to approving / deleting / ignoring your mundane opinion on crap before hassling us about it. Once you have passed the moderation period (think of it as a test), you will be able to post normally, just like all the other retards.

The conceit is that everything is visible to everybody, but information (both observations and orders) travels at the speed of light

Sorry, I don't understand and I feel like I'm missing something to just go "oh, cool". If everything is visible to everybody, how can observation and orders not be, since they are at the speed of light...Also how can something be visible instantly but observations not be.
I gotta admit my brain just melted trying to even formulate my question here :)

Well if you send an order to a fleet 10 lightyears away it's going to take 10 years for them to get the order.

Likewise if something happens 10 lightyears away the information only reaches you in 10 years.

So the further away you are the more difficult it is to manage. Of course, you can move the HQ to a closer star system...

Ah yea, alright. Think the "everything is visible to everybody" part confused me. :)

Interesting concept.

This is makes any ship which can travel faster than light unnoticeable before it strikes your HW. Also you need keep in memory all visible events across galaxy.
Best strategy seems is just move HQ together with fleet.

Which seems reasonable since it's faster than light.

Not if you need/want to expand, protect allies, resources, etc.
Proper military doctrine, standing orders, autonomous structures are the way to go if allowed. Basically setup fleets as submarines in war situations or something.
Could make for an interesting take on the strategy genre.

True, but HQ near fleet allow you get information much faster while controlling fleet with better reactivity. With equal strength, if you have only 3 turns delay for orders/observation it's easy win against opponent who have 10 turns delay. Game need additional methods except moving HQ for increasing efficiency of control/observation.

Now with proper event handling for several observers (but no AI yet)

Some progress

I gave up on the transparent system borders. There's no way to make them look nice in general.

Also I added a main menu

Looks pretty good. I got an impression that you're not an artist at heart, but still, you've managed to make it look alright. Simple, but good.
ProphetSword could learn a thing or two from your approach. No offence intended.

Taking an AI-class, threw together a 3D version of Game of Life in a hour or two for an assigment after first doing it in 2D (just printing in cmd). Got a pretty cool space ship in the second try!

I've been itching to work on my dungeon crawler, but life keeps getting in the way. I did manage to whip up this little pixel art portrait test today though, while trying out the Aseprite pixel editor. Pretty solid software and easy to use, though lacking in the range of features a more established program like Pro Motion has. I have Pro Motion but I'm still learning the interface, which is a tad clunky. Extremely powerful though.

Any other pixel editor programs people would recommend trying out?

This is a potential portrait style for the dungeon crawler. 64 x 64 using only a 4-color grayscale palette.
The game itself will probably be targeting 640 x 360 resolution, which scales up nicely to the commonly used widescreen resolutions.

Don't know how it compares, but I use the GraphicsGale Animation Graphics Editor: GraphicsGale

Looks great, even in grayscale.

I need to check out GraphicsGale for sure - heard good things about it for years but never got around to it. Thanks for the suggestion!

And thanks for the compliment on the portrait. I'm considering the possibility of even having the whole game be grayscale like that, but not sure if it might be too monotonous after a while. Black and white art has a certain old-school AD&D charm to it, which is something I definitely want to evoke.

SO

What happened to muh gayme while I was lazy busy silent about it?

:shittydog:: Me know, me know, you wasted yer precious time stalking dumdum and nonoriri and masturbating yer way into oblivion.

Here is a progress report:

- Enemy movement is finalized and works like a charm.
- Additional UI stuff is done (limited automap, alerts, additional stuff added to the chargen, and maybe some other stuff).
- Currently working on the combat system, encounters, enemy classes and some UI bits, and everything is shaping up nicely.

:shittydog:: That's all, you lazee fuck? WHERE IS ME DEMO?

It's not much, but hey, at least I'm making progress, and I can definitely say that the demo will be released like, uh, on Tuesday 2016. :smug:

:shittydog:: B-b-but ZZ, where is me demo?

Here, take a look at the vid.

This is a test of enemy pathfinding and movement speed to see how long it will take to take another turn @ runtime.

:shittydog:: Oh dear, this turn-based system will blow every turn-based dungeon crawler out of the water?

:positive:

Hope that comparison is positive, I loved the original Tron movie and that Tron 2.0 game.
Still butthurt about Tron: Legacy tho.

If I received 20 bucks for each comparison to TRON, I'd have enough cash to bribe Pig Dong-yum into nuking every Brazil, Mexico and Poland. Twice. :smug:
