Lmao, they didn't have plagues for two years post release, but they were adding shit like tournaments and 3D royal courts? When you add this to the continuing lack of republics as a government form, the change of focus is clear.

I'm not really bothered by the lack of republics. It's crusader kings not crusader republics. I'm more unimpressed by the lack of political mechanics between rulers and the catholic church.

They took a conscious decision to emphasize the mundane parts of life, turning CK from a GSG about managing a dynasty into "medieval sims+". How many times can the same event aka "activity" transpire before it stops being interesting? I don't deny they look fun, and probably are fun the first time, when a new player is actually attached to his toons.

People keep fond memories and take ownership of stories that resulted from emergent gameplay. The aristocratic fun in CKII lies in being a careful rules lawyer who is ready to improvise on a theme, when the conditions arise from the environment of AI-controlled characters.

Like "that one time" when you were at war with the HRE and just then the king of Danemark offered you a marriage between his son and your third daughter which you previously, luckily, denied to someone else, and this came just in time for you to call Danemark into the war and with their 5000 troops plus some additional mercs you hired, you managed to win. How does something like this compare to "I got measles when I travelled to my uncle's county, lol".

I guess they are going for emergent gameplay that creates such stories to be remembered, but who is the target audience here really? Also, if you try to generate "emergent gameplay stories" every odd hour, they stop being memorable or remarkable.
Paradox fanbase deserve this game and so anyone expecting this game to be about strategy while the devs made it clear they don't give a fuck.

Flavortards should be killed, no new substantial mechanics for years, and if they introduce some mechanics is just "wait until it accumulate, click this and get some modifier". Seriously, they are completely empty of any creativity, at least Johan is returning for EU5 so there is a sliver of hope. As for CK3 it kinda feels like abandonware after these three years.

The one thing that makes me curious to see about EUV/"Tinto" is how they've implemented Johan's claim that they want to model the evolution from feudal armies' recruitment to early modern army recruitment. I imagine they'll do some hybrid between CK's recruitment mechanics - which CK though, 2 or 3 - and the EU mechanics.

Also maybe don't force "exciting events" on the player just so something happens.

You know things are bad when "Johan is returning for EUV" sounds like a good sign.
Johan seems to have realized mana sucks and Simulationism is the future (based), so I guess he's coming around for his redemption arc

I won't hold my breath, but it's really funny how simulationism is the stated goal of EU5, of all things, while CK3 is moving in complete opposite direction.

AFAIK, before mass conscription, the biggest army ever assembled in Europe was around 170k frenchmen in the 1700s, and the King of France literally had to go up and down across the country to muster such numbers
Philip III of France took an army of over 130 000 to Girona in 1285. See "Aragonese Crusade". They were defeated mostly by dysentery after their supply route through the sea was cut.

Romans had campaigns with up to around 200k, but I don't think they ever moved a single force that big. Just too difficult logistically

I'm talking about a single campaign that lasted from the spring of 1284 to the 1st of October 1285 when the only big battle occured, though by that time the French army was not in fighting shape.

The Romans had single armies up to ~100k depending on what the precise count of auxiliaries were in I think 2 cases. But of course their total under arms was much larger. There was never really a situation for them where having 200k in a single battle would have been helpful, though I suspect they could have done it. I believe their highest total military strength ever was around 400,000 and maybe 160,000 of those were actual legionaries. This would have been around ~200 AD.

Yeah the numbers of soldiers the Romans used to throw around was something else. Dudes were legit throwing 50k, 100k armies around like candy. Even before the empire. You simply wouldn't see that kind of thing west of China after the period until the late 1700s. I think it shows how much damage the Fall of Rome did. Also, changing priorities.

Granted, quality did go up in the period, AFAIK a High Roman Army would have been pretty good up to 1000 ADs against peer opponents.
European armies probably also went lower on numbers then because they became a lot more cavalry-based than the Roman Army.
Cavalry-wise, Rome was kinda sad. Heavy Infantry was their bread and butter.

Not only are the reviews in the toilet the the most recent DLC is getting *reamed* on the subreddit right now and also the Steam forums. I feel bad for the devs even. Of course it was their choice to make a half-assed DLC and charge obscene amounts of money for it, so I don't feel *that bad*.

Also damn these raiding events are obnoxious. There's one where you find a doll for your kid that can trigger every time you finish raiding, so 4-5 times a month. Extremely obnoxious and unwanted.

I blame long covid. Remember, all of CK3's problems stem from the fact that it was released during covid.
Now, time to celebrate a great launch with another well deserved swedish spring break.

Any opinions on Godherja? The mod doesn't work now, but I would like to at least try it, but after my experience with the New Order, I'm afraid of a repeat of the graphomaniacal plot of that mod.

You DO realize that the "Unlanded Gameplay" will essentially be a glorified text spam simulator, right?
The landless gameplay is too big to fit well in just one DLC. If they wanted to focus on landless play, they should've made the main game about being a minor noble. Since they missed that, they should now work on improving things that can actually get better with DLC.
