Played a couple hours. Disappointed by the combat. You character movement feels too fast, it feels weightless and unrealistic. And enemies are more frantic, leaving little time for calculating, timing, etc which was a key in previous games.

It feels more arcade somehow.

I played for a bit today and the formula is really wearing quite thin by now. Game looks ok, runs competently, but it feels too familiar. I think for these sorts of games to work there needs to be some sort of strangeness that takes you out of your comfort zone. On the contrary, this game feels very tame. And the very first 'real' area after the Shrine looks exactly like Anor Londo. I turned it off 10 minutes after having reached that, with no real desire to keep playing.

I want a new King's Field.

Yep, that was my impression too.

What would that look like? The Souls series is the natural progression of King's Field. Unless you want some retro real-time pseudo-blobber. The technology didn't allow for much in the way of a unique aesthetic.

Lol you clearly dont remember people bitching about infinite stamina knights two handing maces with insane tracking? Cause that bread& butter of DS2 mobs. Playing STR character with zweihander i just send all those faggs flying 10 feet high in the air.

Also lol at slow methodical approach aka hiding behind the shield. Real man two hand his axe or dual wield if he is a dex fag

Also actual meta in pvp right now is turtling behind havels shield and poking with estoc so here is your DS1 combat

I always play dex build + two-handed + stamina shield on the back. Which means no parry cheese and no hiding behind shield.

Abyss Walkers solo without parry is insane. With parry or summon is easy. But once the second phase starts it's circus time.
Yea you can even backstab them  but solo no cheese no shield in 2nd phase is insane. Like artorias+ maria on steroids. I loved it but i get that some might find it just too much to quick

Influenced by Bloodborne I guess, I'm playing the Mercenary guy with two curved swords. I like the skill idea but if there's just one skill for a weapon this might get old fast.

I keep forgetting there's no rally mechanics ;) or is there? I sometimes think there is.

I'm only 3 hours in but there have already been quite a few occasions on which I did what I was 'supposed' to do on my first try due to the experience with Souls games. If this was my first From title, the experience would be magical, I guess.

Finished the game, the last few boss fights were great and really stood out. I'd definitely say it's better than DS2, and even DS1. It may have been shorter, but the levels are definitely better designed. Felt great to reach the top of Lothric castle after going through so much.

A couple of questions:

1. Sometimes after I kill a mob, I get one estus flask recharge. Why? Does it have to do with the mob or the way I'm killing it? At first I assumed it was from critical shot killings, but it's not the case.

2. I saved a pilgrim after High Wall and it came in Firelink Shrine. And he gave me a free level... Will this happen periodically or it was a "thank you" gesture?

Funny, that for most of you it took paying huge price for this game to realize that it's reskined Bloodborne cashgrab for casuals. Yet, before the release you were calling me dumb for bashing this product. Thanks to you, little buyers, next year there will be Bloodborne 2 or new Dark Souls. "developer supporters":D:D:D

2nd you got a dark sigil and now every time you die you get hollowed lvl. Every couple lvls you can go to that pilgrim and you get free lvl. After 5th shows up a new npc with certain questline which leads to a "secret" 3rd ending.

A couple of questions:

You receive an estus charge if another player kindles bonfire near you; no, only some npcs do that

Just about done with the game, had to look up how to get to Archdragon Peak (how the fuck are you meant to figure that out? LOL)

Bosses are more spectacle than substance this time around. It may be due to my having played the previous games, but I defeated all of the bosses on the second try. I also agree with the others in saying the game gives up the slower/ seemingly more methodical pace of the previous games for a faster sloppy rhythm.

Game definitely provides some gorgeous vistas toward the finale.

time for the final boss. i played thoughtfully, slowly, explored every nook and cranny. 26 hours and at the final boss. Died mostly to slashing enemies off cliffs and falling off with them.

Enjoy the Revolution! Another revolution around the sun that is.
Goddamn is there really no way to run freely in the Farron Keep marches? No Rusted Iron Ring this time around? Loving the increased difficulty, some enemies are just brutal (looking at you giant tree monsters), but does the game HAS to be fucking annoying in places too?

Also someone mentioned you can get invaded only if you summon help. I think that's correct. At least I've never been invaded while in ember and solo. As soon as I try a summon boom, stabbed in the back by a red.

I've only been invaded twice, and it was in quick succession. The timing was terrible as I only had like a 20 hp and no estus. Summoned a sunbro and cowered behind him untill it was safe to killsteal :M

Equipping a dagger or another weapon with the same WA and using quickstep seems to be the fastest way to move through the swamp.
(quickstep still works when out of focus points, but without the benefit of i-frames)

So is blocking with a high stability shield (and stamina) no longer a thing?

You can, but most enemies attack so fast that you just run out of stamina immediately and then you need to roll away like a real man.

The only real tactic, outside of rolling around like a manly man, is to stunlock enemies, stay away to wait for stamina and repeat. It's very engaging.

I always thought enemies had infinite stamina. Codex complaining game is too hard, isn't this what you wanted?

This game is not even remotely hard. Not that any Souls game except your very first one is.

Not sure why you even bring it up since not a single person has said the game is too hard.

Well my covenant makes me invade every poor fool in the
forest.
and it looks to be a massive hot spot for invasions and summons. So sometimes it is a huge 1v1v2vCrab fight of red phantoms, red/blue phantoms, White phantom, the human player and one giant pissed off crab who wants to smash every thing.

Actually first run of DSII was overall harder to me than first run of first game.
By the way I found out that SMAA works better than in game option. Looks more crisp too. And performance impact seems identical.

This game plays like a combo based hack n slash.

I'm OK with that though, since I thought Bloodborne was nice. I think if you're a minmaxing turbofag that uses boring weapons and plays for pvp, this game won't appeal to you.

Been powering through with rapier for soft targets and knives for harder ones. I use heavy armor because I'm larping as Ricard from ds1, and because shields and rolling is for nerds. I like how this is the only souls game where bows are actually useful beyond abusing aggro.

Magic is still as unfun as it was in the last 3 games though, which is a shame. They attempted to fix it by crippling long range abities and giving mages melee attacks, which kind of defeats the purpose of going mage in the first place. If offensive magic was just removed, I wouldn't even miss it.

I don't really understand why people believe that dark souls/demon souls was "slow and methodical". From what I recall it was mostly rolling around and ninja flipping and annihilating everything with a lightning claymore.

I think it's a first game effect, where your first souls game play through is usually 50 hrs long and half of it is spent crawling towards the next bonfire with your shield up sweating bullets. The game hasn't changed enough to give someone that first playthrough feeling again, which is kind of a shame, but a completely different argument.
