Well come on now, not-sequels selling over a million copies is pretty decent. Just not Bethesda numbers and just a million or two shy of Bioware numbers.

This is why I believe Bethesda sells bucket loads:
  • They barely innovate. They dumb it down a bit at each iteration, but add some features that fit well with their games without revamping everything up. BiowarEA, on the other hand, has completely revamped the gameplay at each iteration of ME and DA, it's like the have no clue what they want to do;
  • BiowarEA games are locked down. You can't change anything relevant about them, while Bethesda lets you mod the shit out of their games. This makes their games last longer and a wider range of players will be willing to buy their stuff if they know it can be adapted to their liking;
  • Bethesda doesn't rely on (b)romances to sell their shit. There's no faggoty emotional engagement or any of that crap;
  • In Bethesda games, you spend about 99.5% of the time playing the game, instead of watching cutscene after cutscene. You can walk away from scripted scenes and don't look back most of the time, which means that if you're not in the mood for their artistic integrity bullshit (not that Bethesda has ever pulled that card, mind you), you can completely ignore it;
  • Bethesda, unlike BiowarEA, knows they suck at writing and keep dialog interactions down to a minimum. You're not forced to watch 20 minutes long intros (ME2) on their games, or go through a whole jungle of dialog trees composed of nothing but retarded dialog that accomplishes absolutely nothing, gamewise. Bethesda offers you the necessary interactions with NPCs to keep the game going without bothering you. This is another point that Bethesda could easily improve though, like adding more relevant dialog options on their games while keeping it simple;
  • At least with Skyrim, Bethesda has patched the game up considerably and offered quite a few new additions to the game. It might be minor stuff, but people like this and it's another reason to justify why they sold over 10m copies of it;
  • Bethesda markets their games as games instead of C grade movies;
It's not only down to one company's PR department being better than the other. Bethesda actually makes games, unlike Bioware, even though their games are kinda crappy, they still allow you to have some fun.

This is a big one. I think that they could elevate above "shit" status if they really got serious about improving their writing. I wouldn't count on it though, because I genuinely think that their intellect is on par with their shitty writing and there's nothing they're ashamed of.

In the "Looking Back at Looking Glass" panel hosted by Harvey Smith last year, Emil Pagliarulo basically admitted that Bethesda dumbs down their games' text on purpose to "emphasize immersion in the world", or something like that

I feel like with Bethesda's later games there isn't enough underlying interrelation between different parts of the game. You're not going to read a book about some cave and then accidentally wander into it, or find faction members doing anything outside of their guild halls. Every setpiece dungeon/scripted sequence, while maybe cool the first time around, never really fits into anything else. I was forcing myself to push on with the main quest thinking maybe that'd be the part of the game where all the interesting stuff is, but it's even worse than Oblivion in that regard, and the stuff you do in the MQ isn't vastly different from anything you'll be doing in side quests. Everything just feels equally unimportant and equally...mediocre.

It's as if Todd literally locks every person in their cubicle until the day is over, and they each are supposed to work on their assigned NPC/location/model without any greater context or idea of what it's supposed to fit into.

Didn't Bethesda get some awards or something for writing? There you go. How could they even consider their writing is shit when they get awards for it.

You won't get any improvement out of these big companies as long as there are hordes upon hordes of sheeple blowing them all day long.

My question is, did Skyrim really sell over ten million due to marketing, or because Bethesda is the only player in the industry making this type of game?

When you have a monopoly over an entire subgenre, your entire fanbase has nothing to do but queue up and wait to buy your next game.

Bethesda can sell ten million of copies precisely because they don't just sell to their "fanbase".

My impression is that the guy on the street thinks only Bethesda makes these types of games.
I think you're right on this one.But what do you think makes a difference between one rpg and another for the guy on the street if it's not marketing ?

no they can not. Beth's lvel of writing has always been so. Their strong point is world design and ease-to-mod game engine.

"I was wondering when the Pretty Princess would rush in to white knight his hero. The result: Underwhelming as per lately."

Don't be a liar. I have no heroes except myself, and even that's debatable.

:hmmm: Radiant Story? Meet a few Companions doing quests outside, you can bandits outside fighting patrols or even bandits impersonating dead legionaries/stormcloaks unlike Oblibion the shit is randomized a lot and as result you got bored a waaaaaaaaaaaay later. Also you fund books about location but unlike Morrowind they're magic GPS devices. :roll: Say what you want but lately Bethpizda is inclining quite a bit to the point their company and games being hated less on Codex than Biowhore's.

Cannot what? And one could argue that their world design isn't even all that great. Maybe in size and volume but that's not worth the price in quality.

This has always been a dumb, hyperbolic meme. I've also seen almost nothing but praise for ME3's multiplayer which makes it particularly ludicrous.

I've never had any fun with a Betehda game. I've had more fun with games like POR2 and SOZ or even soccer games and I loathe soccer.

Great, one multiplayer game released less than a year ago. Reputations need to be built over time, Roguey. Bethesda has been doing that for over a decade.

They can not raise their level of writing, is what I mean. Look at their earliest game to now: it's always been so-so. Even their apex, Morrowind, is not any better. Anyone think so has shitty taste in reading.

What's their strongest point, that elapse any defiency in writing and make fanboys cream in their pants, is open world design, and make a game engine that is very easy to mod. Just look at their world, not at the background depth, but the variety of landscape and difference in details. In a combination it makes for a game that run fairly smooth, look halfway realistic (important point, this), and beautiful even if you dont use bloom. I know because I run Morrowind on a shitty rig, and its views took my breaths away.

In fact, their strongest points are so strong they make their fanbois blind to any defiency may exist in their game.

You're right laclongquan.

From what I understand Bioware is really good at animating sex. If they just keep perfecting it like Bethesda perfects their open-world design, fanbois will cream their pants. Literally.

The only problem, as this whole thread shows, is that when you get good at animating porn, your fans want raunchier and more disgusting content. The old stuff just doesn't get it up anymore.

Not true! You can make interesting porns and sell it. Make it more and more raunchier is just taking the easy way out, ie investing in new ways instead of perfecting the old way.

Bioware, actually, is specialized in NPC romances. Nothing wrong with that, really. What's wrong with them is their bowing down to fan pressures and doing what THEY want to get more customers, instead of doing what BIOWARE is doing best which is making RPG with romances. The two things are not the same, chaps.

Anything wrong with BG2 with romanceable NPCs? No?

Even then the last decade of Bioware hasn't been significantly worse than the average AAA dudebro shit as far as gameplay goes. They're almost all shallow with an emphasis on presentation.
