Diablo 1/2 is two of few "classics" I've never played. Should I? I've ignored it thus far as I have always assumed it is an autistic skinner box stat grinding simulator. I've always assumed the core combat you basically mash buttons and watch numbers instead of factors like aiming, positioning, dodging, timing etc being relevant. I assumed the level design to be basic bland and boring. I assumed the whole thing is combat instead of the usual ARPG blend of combat/puzzles/platforming/exploration, And I assumed the RPG systems to not even be that interesting in the first place.
This could all very well be ignorant shit, never played it. Like I said, all assumptions. The game is clearly popular, but I need a monocled gameplay enthusiast to clear the air for me. Classic or shit taste simulator? Most gamers have terrible taste, and these people must be getting bred somewhere. Was it with Diablo perhaps? Or is this a golden oldie I have been a fool to shun?

What do you lose by just trying the game yourself for a bit? Judge for yourself, don't rely on retards here to tell you what to think.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me the mechanics autism was brought to the game later on by the fans, and then the developers, and developers of many such games after, indulged those kinds of fans.

When I first played D2, it was because I liked the sword and sorcery theme, setting, art, animation, music, pace, and it did have a palpable atmosphere. It wasn't about grinding for uniques, optimal build, dps, it was about the virtual adventure of fighting evil hordes in a dark fantasy world. If anything, that was the skinner box: running around and wrecking fools in an immersive environment. putting on a new weapon or armor if it was better AND looked baller. I was an arcade player for years, the simplicity didn't bother me, and the different, distinct characters were something most arcade games didn't provide.

Time. Takes a good few hours to fairly judge a game typically, + time to download, install, patches and potential mods. Many times have I felt robbed of my time by shitty games, and that's no fun.
Given it is an old game I am open to just biting the bullet and giving it a try regardless though.

None of this is gameplay. My appreciation for these things you list is strong yet comes second to that.

This is all gameplay, what primarily draws me to games, if it is not shitty gameplay. To my understanding it is mediocre/OK in Diablo, which you all are echoing right now. A game with shit level design I consider to be a shit game, and [insert many other standards in gameplay faggotry], so this isn't going to work out between us. I'm sorry.

There were no synergies in the earlier patches of D2, so there were just the abilities that are mathematically better against non-resistant enemies and the bulk of them that were worse. There isn't that much build autism in D2 because if you can read and you can add multipliers, you can make an effective build. The runewords are a little complicated but for most play you don't ever need to even make one. The stats barely matter so it's not actually that big of a deal what you put points in: there's just some optimal ways to do it.

One way to make the game fun (and even Diablo 3 fun) is to only play HC. That also gives it a more meaningful end point than just grinding for gear. If you can beat hell in HC you won, go make a new character.

There you go then. Honestly, you are not going to miss out by passing on it. If it did not have any of those other qualities I mentioned, I probably would have shelved it after an hour or two, like I did with most of its clones.

Curious and had a little look

First impressions:

-Inventory looks very appealing. I love grid inventories.
-RPG systems seem pretty basic, but servicable.
-The art also looks good in every respect
-WTF is this level design? Is there ever any: differences in elevation. traps, obstacles, falling hazards, enemy ambushes, tricky enemy placement and occasional scripted encounters, puzzle elements, navigation challenges (e.g a maze), hidden secrets? Just looks like a flat plane with all enemies just wandering around, you run up to them and bonk them on the head, grab the loot, rinse and repeat.
-What is the stamina bar for? Looks like it serves no actual meaningful purpose.
-Do you really just go around bonking things on the head? Mechanically-speaking is there not ranged weapons you have to aim and manage ammunition? Blocking? Dodging? Jumping? This is barely an ARPG by the looks of things. Edit: there is bows and arrows at least.
-Quest design also looks like total shit, but I don't mind that nearly as much as the core gameplay looking basic asf.

It is basic when low level, gets more interesting as the game goes on. Also Barbarian is pretty much the most basic character.

I honestly think you'd be able to determine whether you like the game within the first hour or so. But fair enough.

You're looking at the basic melee class at level 1 in what is basically the tutorial quest there.

There is some more complexity in level design but it's all static map tiles that are fake 3d. 90% of it is randomized and enemy placement is also randomized. Some areas are semi mazelike (nothing anything like a REAL maze but what a casual would call a maze). Stamina bar is basically a joke indeed. Diablo 2 has a number of features that are sort of vestigial. It's like a hunger system in an RPG where food is everywhere and you can carry infinite amounts of it.

I saw enough preview vids. Its not the ugly character art and "woking" shit that is the deal breaker to NOT buy. It is the rinse and repeat of old. Once someone pointed out what to do to play on modern computers and use old mods, that sank the blizz ship. The hype is utterly lost on me and the art just irks me to no end. So much for honoring the original art and putting on the EDGE-FACTOR 10 in.

The game is a circus now

I'd think about a D1 remaster but never really liked D2 (of course I preferred IWD). Tried the beta a few weeks back and it was ok but not something I feel the need to go back to.

Apparently they did 3d art for all set and unique items in game.

:shredder:

Playing right now D2 without LOD expansion. It is a shame that they didn't remove patch 1.10 which added synergies from that version as i wanted to play release version D2 rather than that with synergies which i didn't like much.

Is there any way to make the character go faster? It's annoying how slowly he walks.

Why not pick a female character to play?

The Sanctuary mod by Xtimus will be supported by D2R, since it is a text based mod, and the D2R team did also expand what can be modified by text files as well, and so there might be more kinds of modifications as well.

It depends on what you mean by "play" and "should". It will keep you entertained for a few hours no doubt, but making it your "primary" hack and slasher won't be a good time. There is a severe lack of endgame content. If you ask me, there is zero reason to play Diablo 2 when Grim Dawn exists.
