It is fairly evident that Blizzard still doesn't really know why Diablo and Diablo II were a success. I'm not even sure myself what made those games a success, but I'm not paid to know.
I've heard the term "loot" bandied about, I have my doubts. Loot and stats really only attract the autists and aspies.
What I noticed Diablo and Diablo II being better at than most other games, was mainly found in three categories:
Presentation, as in graphics, colors, music, setting, the look & feel. The grim, oppressive, yet alluring setting.
Accessibility, as in how easy it was for most people to pick up and play. The player doesn't have to play it optimally to win, but he can and that's rewarding too!
Refinement, as in how the gameplay feels, how responsive and predictable it feels. How good it feels to smash the enemy with a weapon. How much detail and thought went into items and places and dialogue.
Diablo III was so pathetic, I didn't even bother with it. It failed in all of the above categories. Blizzard garbage.
Diablo IV needs to score top marks in the three, like its oldest predecessors. It has to be the best, by far, in all of the above categories.
Looking at the rogue trailer, it doesn't seem like Blizzard is taking this seriously. It looks mediocre, and for a game in the Diablo franchise, mediocre is a disaster.
