As i'm not into heavy wizardry, can someone explain to me (layman terms plox) how an engine tuned and set for all three platforms ends up being "too complex" and thus they only focus on its PC port? What can constitute "complex" when you have supposedly already made it backwards compatible? :S

(i thought it was one of the major hurdles that was by now past them, ie come the D:OS EE, they had an engine where they could simultaneously 'update'..'port'..? for everything)

edit: not that i give a shit mind, but thinking of all those Linux people, lol..i kept telling them in the Larian forum how delaying D:OS was good for them, lol, as it would allow the next game to be insta-ported to Linux from scratch..

I was curious about that as well, but perhaps the simple fact of expanding the scope of quest/dialogue options and other AI pushes the resources of consoles into performance issues.

Larian have angered the Linux hordes:

@Every GNU/Linux user:
Please note that "Divinity: Original Sin 2" will not be released on Linux. As the developers said themselves: "On the platforms issue - we really don't want to focus yet on porting it to Linux, Mac or even consoles and instead get the gameplay sorted out on the main platform which is PC."
So don't bother with that shout-out. They will be quite fine without external meddling.

Linux "hordes" have been angry for some time.

I don't blame them for being annoyed by the delay on Div OS, frankly Larian's excuses suck. But the Divinty engine isn't Unity and it was created well before the whole 3 platform release thing became a thing. In such cases it's simply not worth the effort and they all know it. Whether they deluded themselves into thinking otherwise after the fact is another matter. But damn stop turning every comment section and forum thread into a linux thread.

Backed for the boxed copy.
Fucking excited as hell.:bounce:

I'm pretty sure this is gonna be done by other KS soon, where the box copy isn't really a copy it's more like a SWAG bag. I kinda liked the idea of a custom USB key myself, but the disc copies are in the same category as linux, not worth it. But then again Obsidian managed it, maybe they have an influential physical copy fan somewhere in the office.

Eh. I manage Linux servers for a living and spend my work days on a Linux desktop & laptop.

My gaming box is Windows. Because I'm not an insane person.

The fact they are shopping with controller support pretty much means it will ship for consoles eventually.

About the KS pitch itself, the intro video presentation was rather underwhelming, but the info itself about the game got me excited about a few things, like the ability and item combos and the expanded npc system.

Also it's great that they invested heavily in new writers, but if their editorial line continues to push comedy those writers will have their work cut out for them.

One thing developers like larian need to realize, it's really hard to right quality comedy in an interactive medium like gaming, especially with dialogue trees. Games like uncharted manage puns and witty dialogue better because they are structures like movies and not like rpgs.

They will more than likely have a Linux port later. Though maybe the sales of Linux for the first one just don't warrant a port for it?

Anyways almost funded? Fuck yeah!

Except for that romance shit. JFC.

I don't see the problem with romances, it's a character relation like any other. They already assured they're not giving it the bioware treatment.

I actually like that they have the balls to do it instead of going with the no romances that way lies bioware xdd meme to gain points with places like this.

Basically this. People who are angry about romances imagine Bioware romances which are sub-porn games level.

Larian have sent mixed messages about romances in the past, publishing a romance-themed Kickstarter update at one point, then Swen Vincke openly mocking the concept of romances in a Twitch stream later on.

I don't mind romances, but it's nigh impossible to write a believable relationship within the limited time scope of a game.

I could very much believe that members of a group spending a lot of time together would developed some affection for one another and end up fucking or flirting, but these types of 'quests' in rpgs often try to make it about these deep romantic feelings and these contrived back stories of broken characters looking for redemption like Bioware often does.

Well, the ambition that you can start the game as a pair of husband and wife characters already pushes the envelope further than any Bioware game ever did.

I dunno, 100h is pretty long time scope for any character development.

The origin stories provide a convenient time compression as well. Maybe time is ripe for another tragic cRPG romance? Or unfulfilled love. Just what the fans were hoping for, right?

You know, I'm surprised more RPGs haven't tried to do this. Jaheira & Khalid: The RPG.

We know from TV that the romance audience responds very well to couples that are already together (think the Korean couple from LOST), and it's also probably the only way to make a romantic relationship in a game that's truly believable.

The romances are probably going to be goofy/superficial anyway; I can't imagine Larian writing anything like Bioware's emo stuff. Most importantly, I hope that, like the dialogue they promise, they're going to be systemic.

Generally, innovative systems/pushing stuff forward is what D:OS excelled at, so I hope for more of that here.

Well, a "goofy" pregnancy might be seen as tasteless. The writers are probably quite eager to do at least a semi-serious take on the miracle of childbirth.

I don't get the tier structure on this - $25-90 just keeps increasing number of copies and it's not until $125 you get anything physical in addition. Maybe it's just that I never pay attention to the physical rewards but this time I actually kind of want an ale mug. for research.
