Some people wonder why anyone would buy things day one for $60, and meanwhile we've got people using a VPN and risking bans to play the game 7 hours early.

I've unlocked tons of games early on Steam and never been banned, they only care if you try to buy games with a VPN to circumvent regional pricing. I have Doom Eternal on the Bethesda Launcher since I got a cheap key, I doubt I'll be banned for unlocking it early on there either.

Wasn't judging you at all, I've got it preloading now. Was just saying the anticipation to play things ASAP is obviously is a thing. Many people insist it isn't.

Level Design seems simplified since last game. Secrets are more little areas off the beaten path and big upgrades like Argent Caches seem to be handed to the player instead of being hidden. So far, I haven't found a secret containing weapons before you are "officially" supposed to.

I was and am still really hoping for stuff like the brilliant Plasma Gun secret in the second level of 2016 or levels like Foundry and Argent Refinery. I know the devs read the internet for feedback and I will definitely find a way to bring this to their attention. I don't think we're gonna get Ion Maiden levels of exploration in this. Another thing I don't like is that there are "useless" secrets that don't really contribute to the game. There are more collectibles but in 2016 collectibles also gave you a combat point, so they were not useless.

Combat is definitely the highlight of the game but while it is like Doom in the sense that you need to prioritize enemies and use the right weapon for the right situation, like 2016, it is more about intense arena battles instead of a war of attrition like the originals, at least so far. What I mean by war of attrition is that a mistake has consequences throughout the map while in Eternal the consequences are harsh and immediate but the recovery is just as quick, if you use the right tool at the right time. The game demands that you play by its rules or you will have a swift and brutal death. Pickups are much more important this time around and you run out of ammo real fast. It's not a question of which is better but I can see why some would dislike it. I suspect this design decision has a lot to do with performance. If the fights are mostly arena-based, they can make sure the player won't funnel monsters across the map, which would have consequences for the performance. They can decide how many monsters they can have and how detailed the arena is based on how many monsters there are.

My opinion is that combat is greatly improved, but level design seems more linear and secrets are easier to find. A bit of a disappointment in that regard, since I hoped for more levels like Foundry or even Kadingir Sanctum, but the game moved in the opposite direction, with an overuse of platforming puzzles as a way to, as they put it, keep the player engaged. I think it works but they focused too much on these platforming sessions.

Combat kicks ass and difficulty is brutal. Slayer gates seem ridiculously hard, based on the first one I did, which I swear spawned like 15 imps or gargoyles to come after me in a first wave, then a bunch of hell knights, revenants and dread knights in two waves.

Also, arachnotrons are ridiculously fucking dangerous, and so are revenants and pretty much everything I've encountered in the first 2 (!) missions. I haven't got the hang of it just yet. This is orders of magnitude harder than Doom 2016 so far.

I won't be playing it. I will continue to complain about how retarded it is.

Also it is good to see one fag go to bat for this crap every single time I say a negative thing about it.

Looking forward to playing it, but I'll be waiting a week or so first to see what they patch.

Jesus christ this game is beating the ever-living shit out of me. Either I aged terribly since Doom 2016 or... I've had too much beer. But I fucking suck right now. Playing on Ultra Violence btw.

edit

Pretty sure it was just a combination of me being rusty (first game I've played in over 5 months) and also booze. As I progressed I did a lot better. I know for a fact that Doom 2016 wasn't this difficult, at least in the early stages.

Doom Eternal is a pretty meh game.
I mean, it's a good game, but it's not a Doom Good game.

The micro management of the ammo/chainsaw/health/fuel is terrible. There is almost not a single battle where you don't need to run around trying to saw demons in the middle of battle.
Not to mention that when you glory kill or saw someone, you are not in control of your characters while others can attack you and run around you while you are "stunned" from the animation.

Pretty annoying game.
The multiplayer is also only 3 players from what I understand, and no proper classic death match?
The Doom guy also walks extremely slow, or did I miss how to run in this game?

Anyone who doesn't think PC gaming has had significant incline the last 5 years or so is trying way too fucking hard to earn Codex edge-points.
Care to provide any examples of said incline? Oh, right...

Dragon Age 2 and Fallout 3.

Doom Eternal is an amazing RPG. Why is this thread in the General Gaming forum and not in the CRPG forum? I am level 6 already in Doom.

You know how in Dark Souls that you can't move while attacking and thus have to think ahead about when it's safe to attack?
It's the same thing.

It's the same thing.
So if you are up to 3 stronger enemies and you don't have enough ammo, you are "Doomed"? Because you can't run away from their projectiles, you move slowly, and you can't replenish the little ammo you have because you will get killed.
Maybe you need to plan ahead to kill one of the big guys with the Chainsaw, and then work out from there.
Kind of meh...
It is no wonder the multiplayer doesn't have a death match.
Maybe people like this kind of game, but for me it's kind of tedious.
It plays more like a lame real time tactical RPG.
It's like playing MK via email.

They are nowhere near the same.

If the Doom "Slayer" moved as fast as the Doom Guy did, the fights would be much, much easier, where as movement speed would do nothing in Dark Souls, as you still have to figure how the enemy moves. Dark Souls is finger learning kind of difficulty. You have to memorize the boss move set with your hands so that it then becomes second nature. But in a gun and run game like this the variables are too random. It's all about dodging things at the last moment and you can't do that efficiently because your movement is hamstringed so you have to rely on movement boosters like double jumping, jumping platforms or teleporters, or tricks like the hologram grande.

BTW, one of the best weapons in Doom 2016 was the secondary fire mode for the rocket launcher, the one that allowed you to explode the missile before it hit the target. That's because in the chaos of the fight, relying on the the splash damage was your best bet as accuracy gets thrown out the window if every time you try to aim at a monster your are putting yourself in danger since your movement is too slow to dodge shit in case you get fired on.

the pc is the fatest moving character in game, fast enough to dodge any enemy attack, specially now that you have more evasive options
if you can't dodge them you need to git gud
