I wasn't feeling Doom Eternal either at first, but it turned out to one of the best modern shooters out there once you get past the gamey aspect of it.

This is a Day 1 purchase.

Video games being gamey, how terrible. How retarded to oppose such a concept more like. But yes, good post for once. Doom Eternal is pretty gud for a modern game, though the gameyness is the best part. People will cry and they have my allegiance: it not really being something worthy of the Doom name (e.g level design complexity or lack thereof), the almost comical look, and the memeification of tone/atmosphere/writing all keep it from greatness, but as a game it is simply a respectable and engaging effort in its own right. It should just not be called Doom.

It wont be a day one purchase for me, one should always wait for the marketing campaign and shill army to let up, unless it is clear as day from footage + trusted sources that shit is good I suppose.

It can be called whatever they want as long as they keep making good games.

It's hilarious that a bunch of old gamers who are stuck in the past think they're better judges of what Doom is than id.

id doesn't even know what Doom is anymore. The franchise pretty much started and ended with the original Doom, if you think about it. Doom II was just shitty DLC, Doom 64 wasn't even made by them, and Doom 3 tried to be Half-Life but even worse. 2016 and Eternal very much fit into the mould of modern-day shooters.

I feel like id Software is renowned more for their technical expertise under John Carmack than anything else. Because their games are rather crass and basic by more modern standards, and their Gen X rebellious attitude during the 1990s made certain that the original team was at each other's throats almost constantly. They lacked a defined leadership structure, and everyone was in it for themselves. And after Quake, you can see the decline in quality, both at id and their spinoff companies under John Romero like Ion Storm. I appreciate Doom and Quake for their simplicity and unique aesthetics, but I'm not going to pretend like they are mechanically deep games or haven't already been far surpassed by future iterations on their mechanics (i.e Duke 3D and Halo).

Bro the game isn't Doom, the proof is in the pudding (game design), and id software 2024 isn't id software 1993 either. An entire different entity in all but name. A corporate mill, not six passionate uncompromising dudes in dad's garage. You're such a smoothbrain, please level up.

Aww man first good post from you I've seen and you just had to blow it right at the end :(

Also even Duke 3D does not outright surpass Doom. Overall, I think it is the better game, but there is some pretty core issues and aspects Doom did better.

Well, I can't say I don't like the trailer, it looks fun and trying different and interesting things. Also, and not less important, it's a real GAMEPLAY trailer.

If I can point anything it would be...why an origin story? We had the original Doom. Besides...lore is not the main reason to play Doom. We have already demons, hell, cool weapons and the doomguy, that's enough! Anyway it will be a secondary thing, so not a big deal. So, at the moment, good! Much better than most of these bullshit MCU movies wannabe trailers.

What?! The Dark Ages? Doomguy is still a guy? What in the world?! That's crazy!

I have a feeling (a bad one) that from now one they will milk and milk and milk the name until it will become something riddiculus like DOOM: PAPA SMURF TOMB RAIDER LEGO EDITION™ or reboot the whole thing and make Doomguy an END LEVEL BOSS DEMON-MAN and put a lady as a protagonist.

100% current id devs have no clue what doom is. Useless mongrels raised on gamepad shooters (gow or cod most likely).

But a game like Doom Eternal is too HECKIN' fast to play well on a controller. Unless they were fans of Painkiller and Serious Sam, they probably stumbled into arena-style FPS games by accident. The original Doom 4 was planned to be a straight up Call of Duty clone, which shows how creative id truly is, and after a lot of prototyping they found this happy little medium, which coincidentally inspired almost every "boomer shooter" indie FPS to come.

Not only is DOOM 64 a primary point of tonal inspiration for DOOM Eternal, but it's also the first game in the series that Martin ever owned, and it's his personal favorite.
Now we know why nu-id is so retarded.

But there's already a medieval Doom, and it's been out for decades at this point.

Eh, can't say I mind. Both Quake and Unreal were playing with that arbitrary, heterogeneous mixture of sci-fi and fantasy in the late 90s and early 2000s, there was something Heavy Metal about it and it worked.

Couple of days ago i learned what an extraction shooter is. Still have no clue what they actually look like, but i have a feeling whoever things this is an improvement over Doom Eternal may end up recanting on that opinion.

Anyway, graphics look nice i guess.

I liked 2016 waaaaay more. They Marvel/Disney'ed the fuck out of the tone and lore in Eternal and made the combat less fun by adding all that pointless micromanagement bullshit. Eternal was one of my biggest disappointments that year. Atleast I got a free remaster of Doom 64 out of it.

Eternal is fun as fuck on higher difficulty.

The only thing I didn't like about it was the rainbow loot drops, and it only took me 30 seconds to install a mod that changed the loot to look like Doom 2016.

Tone was definitely better in 2016.

The lore in Doom Eternal is retarded in a way a lot of people don't realize, since you were all likely smarter than i was and decided not to read any of that shit. I did, and it was quite painful.

Yeah I didn't bother reading lore past first couple entries. Writing is utter garbage. The other thing Doom 2016 had going over Eternal was prettier lighting. However, it also had this issue where enemies would sometimes blend into surroundings, so visual style of Eternal served gameplay better.
