It can be called whatever they want as long as they keep making good games.
It's hilarious that a bunch of old gamers who are stuck in the past think they're better judges of what Doom is than id.
id doesn't even know what Doom is anymore. The franchise pretty much started and ended with the original Doom, if you think about it. Doom II was just shitty DLC, Doom 64 wasn't even made by them, and Doom 3 tried to be Half-Life but even worse. 2016 and Eternal very much fit into the mould of modern-day shooters.
I feel like id Software is renowned more for their technical expertise under John Carmack than anything else. Because their games are rather crass and basic by more modern standards, and their Gen X rebellious attitude during the 1990s made certain that the original team was at each other's throats almost constantly. They lacked a defined leadership structure, and everyone was in it for themselves. And after Quake, you can see the decline in quality, both at id and their spinoff companies under John Romero like Ion Storm. I appreciate Doom and Quake for their simplicity and unique aesthetics, but I'm not going to pretend like they are mechanically deep games or haven't already been far surpassed by future iterations on their mechanics (i.e Duke 3D and Halo).

100% current id devs have no clue what doom is. Useless mongrels raised on gamepad shooters (gow or cod most likely).
Now we know why nu-id is so retarded.https://www.ign.com/articles/how-doom-64-influenced-doom-eternal-ign-unfiltered
Not only is DOOM 64 a primary point of tonal inspiration for DOOM Eternal, but it's also the first game in the series that Martin ever owned, and it's his personal favorite.
I liked 2016 waaaaay more. They Marvel/Disney'ed the fuck out of the tone and lore in Eternal and made the combat less fun by adding all that pointless micromanagement bullshit. Eternal was one of my biggest disappointments that year. Atleast I got a free remaster of Doom 64 out of it.I wasn't feeling Doom Eternal either at first, but it turned out to one of the best modern shooters out there once you get past the gamey aspect of it.
This is a Day 1 purchase.
Check out Tarkov on twitch, that is biggest oneCouple of days ago i learned what an extraction shooter is. Still have no clue what they actually look like, but i have a feeling whoever things this is an improvement over Doom Eternal may end up recanting on that opinion.
Anyway, graphics look nice i guess.

Eternal is way more fun than Doom 2016, unless you suck at it.
