Looks good. Doom Eternal was great, one of the best fps in modern times, in particular when it comes to AAA. You have to be a special kind of faggot to care about lore in a game like Doom. As long as they keep the difficulty and gameplay as tight as before I'm in.

The lore was good in 2016. Why tf would I not care about it? Had I known Eternal's writing would go full retard then yes I wouldn't have cared.

Looks... fun
I am surprised, because gameplay-wise it seems as different to Eternal, as the latter was to 2016
If that's the case then Hugo Martin and his team get a thumbs-up from me, for having the balls to play with the concept and try something different, instead of just playing it safe and doing the same shit over and over again

I liked Eternal DLCs a lot less than main game so if gameplay is actually different it's probably for the best. Certainly better than going further into direction of Ancient Gods. Last thing I want is a fucking Sekiro FPS.

Eternal is way more fun than Doom 2016, unless you suck at it.

Eternal had better gameplay (and some better enemies), but the pastel visuals and marvel fantasy nonsense were a detriment.
I didn't realize there are actually people who played games like this for anything other than the gameplay.

As for the visuals, the pastel crap is only in the loot drops and some parts of the HUD. For the most part, the game looks fantastic.

I think lighting makes it look more flat overall than Doom 2016 but mostly it looks fine. Also noticeably improved once they added RT reflections.

It looked more pastel and colorful. Some will say "but that's how original Doom was", which, yeah but not really. I mean yes, there's a lot of bright colors but the ambiance was quite dark and the Doom engine played a lot with lighting to create mood and atmosphere.

Anyway, Eternal still looked good and most importantly, the optimization was off the charts for a modern game. Sure, it helps it had no open world bullshit but still. On my 5700 XT i got over 100+ FPS on Ultra, which is specactular for a 2020 game. Also, the nu-Doom engine has probably one of the best implementation of post-processing effects i've seen in any game in recent memory. Everything just blends togheter seamlessly and there's nothing that stands out as being out place and nothing that looks wierd in motion.

Yeah the only unoptimized thing in it are Ice Bomb effects, otherwise performance is amazing. I can go 1440p + Ray Tracing on a fucking 3060 without upscaling and have stable 60 FPS. Except for a rare drop to 55 fps for a second or two when shooting frozen enemies while standing close to them. Wish they patched that effect but it's not a huge deal really. Considering that every other game I tried couldn't even do 1080p with RT reflections without performance going to absolute shit, I was impressed.

I stopped caring about Heretic when it was revealed it was part of the Rise of the Triad universe.
Wait, what?

Also, this new Doom looks retarded. "Medieval" but full of guns. Why couldn't they make it more melee-focused like what was promised in the old Quake vision (before they decided to just do a Lovecraftian version of Doom, but in three dee).

Also, if it has the stupid health/armor/ammo mechanic of Eternal, it's even more worthless.

Yep. Quick summary of how Heretic, Hexen, Rise of the Triad and by extention Wolfenstein, Commander Keen and DOOM all link together:

(starts at 1:36)

And yes, this also means that the two chucklefucks from Youngblood are the aunts of Commander Keen.

He says gameplay will feel more like original Doom than 2016 and Eternal, whatever that means.
Very little platforming compared to Eternal, the game is mostly "on the ground"
The gameplay loop in this one has been designed from scratch, won't be as familiar to 2016 and Eternal players. They wanted weapons to feel new.
Focus on large areas and exploration.
A lot of gameplay elements and control scheme from Eternal have been streamlined.
The development team is smaller than most AAA team nowadays.

A lot of this sounds like bullshit marketing tbh, but we'll see.

The level design, mindless spastic gameplay and being able to effectively fly around (and in turn invalidate almost all threats) were my main issues with Doomy Ternal. So if they're actually going the route of making something that's gameplaywise more deliberate and literally grounded, with proper explorable levels to boot, then this might turn out "alright".

This sounds like it's going to be more Serious Sam-y with its wide, flat, battlegrounds. I wonder how they're going to make it feel as hectic as Eternal does. This talk of streamlining, vehicle sections, does concern me a bit, but we'll see. At the very least, I'll enjoy the aesthetics and the violence.

It means jack shit Doom's gameplay was entirely interwoven with the level design. It was partly about the shooting, partly about the enemy placement. The footage we are shown is wide open spaces. At best, it's gonna be like Serious Sam.

Tone was definitely better in 2016.

The lore in Doom Eternal is retarded in a way a lot of people don't realize, since you were all likely smarter than i was and decided not to read any of that shit. I did, and it was quite painful.

 Yes, I most certainly did not. Doom didn't have story aside from the one the player experienced through gameplay and atmosphere, and that will not change for me unless it is obvious a lot of effort and class went into it.

Anyway, Eternal still looked good and most importantly, the optimization was off the charts for a modern game.

Cuck. I'd take a sub-par performing awesome game over a highly optimized turd. Like the 90s. Not that a turd is what DE is, but still.

If they make it different than 2016 and DE (that I didn't like), with better level design and less platforming, it could be interesting. I'm still sad it's not a new Hexen/Heretic. I'll go play Hexen 2 as I cry.

I don't understand where this copium comes from.

That is the ONE thing we won't see. Ever.

Indeed. Ingenious complex 3D level design that became a standard in the 90s largely thanks to Doom is a dead art, has been for a long time. Even the often alleged best of modern level design, Arkane studios, have absolutely pussified level design with braindead challenge, as well as objective markers to take the navigation out of it, but people don't see that and only care about the fact it is open-ended. Wow multiple ways to tackle the same braindead obstacle, woo-hoo! Just as one example of the inadequacy.

It's called giving credit when it is due.

Always warranted. However you said "most importantly", sounding my graphics/tech decline whore alarm. Sure, you meant that as otherwise you wouldn't really be able to play the game, potentially, but still. I'd rather not be able to play an awesome game just yet than play optimal shit. I don't consider extreme optimization so peasants can play all that important. Simply waiting for your next purchase solves that issue as hardware is continually evolving. Oftentimes in the 90s high framerates was out of the question. Nobody cared. It's still important but should be pretty low on the list of priorities. Game design is most important.

Somebody mentioned the graphics and that's what i was talking about. "Most importantly" in terms of the subject of the visuals.
