I was going to agree with Rhalle, because I'd been taught exactly the same distinction, but Merriam-Webster actually makes a more nuanced claim:

Definition of DISINTERESTED

1
a : not having the mind or feelings engaged : not interested<telling them in a disinterested voice — Tom Wicker><disinterested in women — J. A. Brussel>
b : no longer interested <husband and wife becomedisinterested in each other — T. I. Rubin>
2
: free from selfish motive or interest : unbiased <adisinterested decision> <disinterested intellectual curiosity is the lifeblood of real civilization — G. M. Trevelyan>

Disinterested and uninterested have a tangled history.Uninterested originally meant impartial, but this sense fell into disuse during the 18th century. About the same time the original sense of disinterested also disappeared, withuninterested developing a new sense—the present meaning—to take its place. The original sense of uninterested is still out of use, but the original sense of disinterested revived in the early 20th century. The revival has since been under frequent attack as an illiteracy and a blurring or loss of a useful distinction. Actual usage shows otherwise. Sense 2 of disinterested is still its most frequent sense, especially in edited prose; it shows no sign of vanishing. A careful writer may choose sense 1a of disinterested in preference to uninterested for emphasis <teaching the letters of the alphabet to her wiggling and supremely disinterested little daughter — C. L. Sulzberger>. Further, disinterested has developed a sense (1b), perhaps influenced by sense 1 of the prefix dis-, that contrasts with uninterested <when I grow tired or disinterested in anything, I experience a disgust — Jack London (letter, 1914)>. Still, use of senses 1a and 1b will incur the disapproval of some who may not fully appreciate the history of this word or the subtleties of its present use.

God, this is so much more interesting than Dragon Age 2.

Customizing the stats is the only thing that matters. :obviously: Funnily enough this was a compromise that Obsidian figured out years ago way back in the Sith Lords. You could change Kray-Kray and Visas's robes but their looks would always remain the same. Same deal with Zhjaeve in NWN2 although that was a unique model issue.
!

Funnily enough, that "compromise" has been around since the beginning[1]. You could change Black Mage's robes, but his look would remain the same.

It's the default option when you are too lazy to draw new graphics for each piece of equipment (or there isn't space on the disk).

I see it as a bit of a backwards step, one of the (very few) nice things about shifting everything to 3D was the more satisfying barbie dress up elements, but they're being removed to cut costs.

Maybe once we're used to having characters keep a single appearance all game, they'll introduce the totally new and unique idea of giving each character a couple of different looks based on the general type of armor he is wearing, or giving the main character a new look when he powers up midway through the game. Progress!

[1] Not implying that FF1 was the first RPG.

Those words and expressions exist in german too. Interest=Interesse, Disinterest=Disinteresse, Lack of Interest=Mangel an Interesse.
Mangel an Interesse can be used synonymously for Disinteresse. Given the similarity of english and german I have no reason to believe it's any different in english, especially since a quick internet research confirmed it.
Just because two languages of the same family have corresponding words do not mean that they are used in the same way. Word meanings and usages change frequently, and not necessarily in parallel.

I don't actually disagree with your conclusion, just being pedantic. :obviously:

when you try to give examples in german then use the proper word - it's desinteresse :obviously:
Sorry for the typo.

BTW the Gamebanshee dude I ripped the newspost off used disinterest in exactly this manner and he is american, so... yawn.

yeah, like in this case:

eventually means letztendlich in german

while

eventuell means perhaps in english.
two completely different meanings for almost identical words.

the typo ain't important. ich wollte nur meinen senf dazu abgeben :D

A comparison with affected, unaffected, disaffected could be useful or am I missing something?

Disinterested basically means that one doesn't care either way. Example: What kind of ice cream do you want: vaniila or chocolate?

If you don't care either way, but you still want some ice cream, you are disinterested.

If you don't want any at all, or the thought of ice cream (or Dragon Age Complete Edition) makes you sick, then you are uninterested.

Well, google seems to agree with you. While I still think this is just an elaborate cover-up for some American who misused/made up the shitty sounding word "uninterested" where she meant to use "disinterested", it's clear that everyone uses disinterested as "is not interested in/shows no interest in" and not as another word for "impartial". So, as we already have "impartial" and don't need another word that means the same, and nobody uses "uninterested", I'm perfectly fine with continuing using disinterested the way I always have. No matter how elaborate the Yanks make their cover-ups.

So basically, the retailers are not emotionally engaged enough. Oh, the irony.

I really wish that we here in the West could get actual dating sims like in Japan, so that the tards would take their sex and romance and GTFO of our RPGs. Remember when mainstream movies were often hyped for having nudity and sex? We don't see much of that anymore, since genuine porn is so easily available on the internet.

Nudity and sex has never hurt mainstream movies, though. Because it was being done right. But that wouldn't work in the video games. Because in that case all the hawkes and shepards would still retain their pixelated virginities.

This thread has it all, lolworthy pics, Volournian ramblings, grammarnazis, a general hatred towards Bioware.

I am so intrigued by this thought - how long can they keep this up? They continue to piss off people with every game. Look at Bethesda, big studio, release a AAA game, get majestic sales + reviews. Sure it's dumbed down, but it's not anywhere near the level of retardation of DA2.They are basically hugely successful in the fantasy RPG space. They seem to have stayed true enough to their core fanbase while attracting newer ones (I've never played an ES game).

Bioware simply cannot do this. They have this very awkward delivery, somewhere between wanting to be a jock and being a homosexual basement dweller. It doesn't work. It's fucking retarded.

I really hope that ToR fizzles out after a little while and they just lose so much money that it isn't feasible to continue. Then the good devs will go off and form a new company and it will be okay possibly for a few more years.

One thing is for fucking sure, anything they do with Dragon Age now will be truly tainted. I guarantee that they will get next to NO pre order sales this time round. It was a clusterfuck no matter what you say about the sales, the game was fucking horrible.

If they want sales the best moves they could make would be to publicly state that Laidlaw has been "transitioned to another project" and then proceed to actually make a real Dragon Age sequel.
