For an open game with crafting, they really streamlined weapon upgrading, kinda sad I didn't even think about it before looking at this post.

they streamlined it in Dark Souls 2. And it was a correct decision, because DeS' upgrade system was a massive clusterfuck.

Maybe I'm biased because I'm always making the same weapon in DS they never made anything even close to meat clever, what a cool weapon.

First, whetstones and AoWs are also part of the weapon upgrade system in ER.

And second, the upgrade system in DeS was too autistic anyway, aint nobody got time for that.

Elden Ring's system is just that of Dark Souls 3 but taken to the extreme, but the way that you upgrade special weapons collapses under how long the upgrade track is. Having something like small/medium/large somber stones which you need the normal 2/4/6 amounts for and capping off with a special stone would probably be best.

i wasn't talking about weapons itself, my comment referred to Demon's Souls upgrade system where you had to juggle a ton of different types of materials - sharpstones, bladestones, mercurystones, suckerstones etc. Needlessly convoluted.

I know but still it's better to have different materials than just 2 stones that are weirdly placed anyway same with Dark souls I felt epic when I made my first boss weapon.

Dude, in ER elemental and other affinities are connected to whetstones and AoWs instead of upgrade stones. The upgrade system is not just about two types of stones, it's not THAT streamlined.

whetstones are equivalents of embers from Dark Souls 1 or coals from Dark Souls 3.

Those motherfucking japs, man, I swear to god...

My kid kept nagging me that he wanted to play around in the open world so I reinstalled and he launched the NG+ save. Framerates after the last patch were ABYSMAL. I mean, REALLY bad. I went from an average 45 fps down to an average of 30-35.

Yesterday I decided to try disabling the Steam overlay and the game is now smooth and playable. Don't have an overlay to measure it but I have a pretty good eye and I'd say the averages are more than the 45 I used to get before the last patch, maybe around 50 fps on average with the Steam overlay disabled, up something like 15-20 fps just from the overlay gone.

This is such sheer incompetence that I don't even have the words...

Even speedrunners are downgrading back to 1.02, and not just because of hoarfrost stomp nerf - older version runs faster.

Hmm, I never used them, I just changed weapon types with ashes.

you don't "use" whetstone knives. Finding them simply unlocks the ability to change weapon scalings upon applying a new ash of war. Regular whetstone knife unlocks heavy/keen/quality scalings, sanctified knife unlocks holy scaling, glintstone whetblade unlocks magic scaling, etc. Just like finding different embers in the first Dark Souls.

I mean, it says what they're for, even with one of those annoying tutorial pop ups the first time you pick one up. Can't fault the game for your shit reading skills.

Is the Cipher Pata found in the Roundtable Hold any good? I'm looking into giving a Faith build a shot and a pure Holy weapon with good scaling sounds nice, but I'm not sure how effective it's going to be down the line. I enjoyed Caestus/Vanquisher's Seal runs in DS3 and DS2, so I wonder what this is going to be like.
If you want a pure holy blade, get the Coded Sword, it's much better. Still, keep in mind they're only usable as side arms, not your main weapon, there's many enemies that are deeply resistant to holy in this game (otoh they're really powerful on those that are weak, like undead).

Why the coded sword? because its weapon art is a gigantic arc that staggers in a single hit all the weak foes around you. It's great for exploration. The art is a little slow, but the reach is so big it's not difficult to get it to hit.

For boss fights, the blasphemous blade is arguably the faith build's moonveil. Very, very high damage weapon art, better range than moonveil (and mini AoE so it kills multiple enemies if lined up), solid stagger. If you combine that with Golden Vow, Flame Grant Me Strength and the fire damage boosting talisman, you reach the sort of bullshit damage that dual katanas with bleed do.

Don't underestimate using regular weapons (the ones you can throw ashes of war into and which you can mod the scaling affinity by using whetstone knives) too, they can throw more variety to your moveset when you need like like wanting faster weapons in your arsenal. Bleed is effective even if you don't have a bleed build. Seppuku on two katanas will shred shit no matter what build you're using.

Overall, faith is cool because you can play with many elements which can rip to shred enemies that are weak to them. If you slightly hybridize with arcane, you'll get the cool arcane weapons too, the rot spells (really good damage over time stuff, cast once then sit behind a shield). Experiment, it's powerful stuff.

First, it's not a new system, it's the same as in Dark Souls 3, you absolute troglodyte.

Second, mix and matching ashes with different damage and scaling types is planning. Your autistic ass being too much of a mouth-breather is clearly a you problem and not the game's.

Dark souls 3 is trash, so that explains a lot of why this system is also horrible porting anything from that disaster is mistake

I like how people are endlessly arguing about the meaning of FS games.

Thing is, a lot of this trademark confusion and cryptic character might be due to English translators not actually understanding Japanese

I'm getting really sick of this game being totally incapable of sustaining a connection past about 2 minutes for 90% of connections.

How many fucking times do companies have to learn the lesson that peer to peer connections are fucking trash and have no place in any kind of multiplayer game.
