Here's my last encounter with that guy, in my current RL1 playthrough:

Jeez that's like 20 times the damage per hit that I was doing. I had no problem dodging all his moves (except the roll) as you did but I can't parry. I've tried a few times to get the knack, practicing on guardsmen. I just get hit 95% of the time.

I'm actually pretty annoyed just how powerful bleed is. It makes my build look shit and I've put a lot into realizing it. I hope it gets nerfed TBH, as it seems like it invalidates all other builds. I don't think I'll respec though. I've put more than 100 hours into my pure faith build and I'd like to finish what I've started. I'll see him through to my target stats then probably respec him to a STR/FTH hybrid with the clawmark seal or just leave him and do a DEX/ARC character. That or just switch his development to a hybrid in NG+ and keep the stats he's earned already.

His stats:

Vigor: 40 (Done!)
Mind: 26 (Target 40)
Endurance: 25 (Done. Maybe. 35 would be nice.)
STR: 12
DEX: 10
INT: 11
FTH: 45 (50 with talisman, target base 75 but may accept base 55)
ARC: 10

So far I'm better with a straight sword and shield than anything else I've tried. I love the range and damage on the heavy version of square off, and the light version seems to hit what the heavy doesn't. I've yet to find a better straight sword for me than my +14 Flame Art Lordsworn's.

That's the first weapon I got after my club. I came out of the starting crypt, killed guardsman until I could afford trousers, got my horse and ran for the beast crest heater shield that I knew was there from my last attempt. I got the lordsworns sword and killed a Kaiden horseman. He dropped chest armor. Those three items, armor sword and shield are still equipped now at level 100. I got them all at level 1, before I put any runes into levels or even got a holy seal.

I originally thought "Get him functioning as a shielded caster then take STR and END for a colossal weapon in the late game". I drastically underestimated how long that would take. I'd need so much STR and END to make the switch to colossal it doesn't seem possible without a character of level 200+. I seem to be most of the way through the game at the level I'm at. I've at least explored 4/5 of the overworld map and killed 3 main bosses. Feeling extremely OP in most encounters at level 100. Most bosses included (I had to walk away from the gargoyle twins in the aqueduct. I'll be back for them).

If you've been trying to parry with a regular medium shield, you've just been playing a rigged game. The only way to have a reasonable amount of parry frames is to use the buckler, a small shield, or a medium shield with the Golden Parry ash of war. Just to give you an idea, there's a bigger difference between parrying with a regular medium shield and using Golden Parry than between medium and fat-roll.

fUCK.

I just killed the Radahn fucker.

And the game hung up on me at the loading sign. It's still there. It's been five minutes.

I'm fearful of turning the console off due to the possibility of losing the game state / cutscene?...

edit: 's fine, I think. Jeez. The gang (Blaidd and Alexander) are on the beach. I managed to see the star fall.

Good boss, actually. Will remember him, surely...

You should start to accumulate runes in the end game areas that will enable you, should you desire it, to level up much, much higher than 100. Have you finished all of the underground areas? I only ask because you specified the overworld map and don't know if you meant to include them. I didn't even start farming for runes until after I'd beaten the game and through natural exploration and making sure to kill every single boss regardless of whether or not they were optional I was just over 140 at the end. That character has since moved on to new game plus but I kept a backup to be able to access the end game state, collect every thing possible, and level up super high to be able to practice with every weapon.

As I mentioned above my character is level 223 and the few weapons I can't use are the extreme intelligence weapons, so the better staves and the Dark Moon Greatsword. You would certainly need a fair number of levels to be able to use a colossal weapon competently but I should think you'd be able to work with it well enough with maybe 30 levels or so, which is absolutely not overpowered for the end of the game. Lets say you get up to roughly 35 strength; that is only 23 levels and you already have 25 endurance which is decent but could go to 35 if you wanted (or 40 with the Soreseal), and you could use the Great Jar Arsenal with the Erd Tree's Favor to bump your capacity up significantly without the levels expenditure. That takes care of your carry weight but you may need to compensate with another talisman for the stamina, but if you fight cautiously then that wouldn't be necessary. Most of the colossal weapons or swords have strength requirements below 35, I think one or two general colossal weapons are at 36, and then there is the Prelate's Inferno Crozier at 45 and Giant Crusher (my personal favorite) at 60. For the swords I think there are only 3 that require over 35 strength, Radahn's sword, the Grafted one, and the Ruins one. Even Maliketh's requires only 34 strength and I think it is one of the best.

By the way, are you using many incantations, or are they secondary for you? For my character I ended up using them less and less as the game went on, but I definitely do not regret leveling Faith to 33 (at 38 with Marika's Soreseal). Going into any serious encounter I always use Golden Vow followed by Flame, Grant Me Strength and then switch back to power stance great swords, or two-handing Giant Crusher. The only offensive incantations that I found I could use reliably well are the basic Lightning Spear, Black Flame, and Stone of Gurranq. I've actually not messed around with certain ones that I've read to be useful, like Swarm of Flies, or Pest Threads but I may get around to trying a pure Faith casting build later tonight. If I gain 3 more levels and use the Two Fingers Heirloom I'd be able to cast every incantation with the exception of Elden Stars. I have in mind to try out Frozen Lightning Spear and Fortissax's Lightning Spear, Lannseax's Glaive, the two Ancient Dragon Lightning incants, the three Aspects of the Crucibles, and I'm very curious to see what Black Blade is like once I have the requisite Faith for it. Flame Cleanse Me absolutely made Lake of Rot tolerable to actually clear in full as opposed to just running through to the end, and Ekzyke's Decay helped me with Glintstone Dragon Smarag (shame you need to defeat the eponymous Decaying dragon for it where I really could have used the bonus damage, but of course there is always the regular Rotten Breath). Ultimately I rely on melee for 95% of encounters and beyond buffs I tend only to go for incants when I need to reach a scarab in the air or want to draw an enemy out of a tight space, or if I'm finding it difficult to reliably hit a boss, like Astel for instance. But it is almost always the basic Lightning Spear, charged, naturally.

That sounds so fun. I've kept one of every weapon and armor piece I've found. I don't have the patience to do what you did and farm for everything.

Oh its so much fun! I don't always have patience for farming, but every couple of days I'll feel up for it. I mostly hate it in other games, in fact the only games I've done it in besides Elden Ring are Tactics Ogre and some of the Monster Hunter games. Once I got the Silver Scarab over in Caelid it became a MUCH more tolerable ordeal; previously I'd used the Silver-Pickled Fowl Foot if I was making the rounds repeatedly and not getting anywhere, but they require Four-Toed Fowl Foot to craft and the birds are one of the few enemies I don't bother killing unless I just happen to be passing right by, so they were a rare consumable for me. The only drops that took me a significant amount of time were the complete Banished Knights non-altered set (the chest piece in particular as it only drops from the two knights at Castle Sol, both of which require a bit of a hike to reach), the complete Fire Prelate set, and the complete Blue Silver set (the one dropped by the first generation Albinaurics I detailed my experience with above). Other than that I was able to get most things relatively quickly. I recall one of the Imp heads did take me like 40 or more kills to get, which of course after finally dropping I moved on and have since managed to acquire 4 more of them by chance, and there may be a few others I'm not recalling but in general it really isn't so bad. Do note however that I've killed hundreds, nay thousands of graveyard skeletons and still do not have that Scythe.. that and the amazing looking straight sword that the eagles can drop in Stormveil Castle are two weapons I intend to get this coming weekend.

But yea it is really cool to be able to have such an abundance of options to mess around with as I try to determine my next serious build. I can't make up my mind if I want to stick with the Lionel's Set and power stance the Great Epee and Godskin Stitcher, or if I want to go with my newfound mix-up of Nights Calvary Armor with Blaidd's Gauntlets and Royal Knight Greaves sans helm and maybe the Bloodhound's Fang with the Icon Shield. I have maxed out the Nagakiba and Hand of Malenia and really like how they look and feel, but I sort of got used to doing regular poise damage and critical hits with power stance greatswords or Giant Crusher; even those two heavy thrusting swords can stance-break in four jumping L1s (the greatswords take 3) but I'm not sure how many the katanas take, though I think it is a few more.

I also keep one of everything weapon and armor I find, and with weapons if it is one I like a lot I keep a second copy, where with armor I only keep a second copy of those pieces which are alterable, so that I can have one of both states. Of course most people probably don't care about getting so much of the available equipment and likely stick with whatever they like and move on, but I really, really love this game in a way I haven't loved a game in a very long time. So I thoroughly enjoy trying to get one of everything, because every 10 items or so I like to sit back and read the item descriptions, and it gives me an opportunity to analyze each environment and look more closely at the paintings, the architecture, and get a feel for the history of each location. I'm totally in love with this game and will be playing for a while, the only thing upcoming I was looking forward to is the Monster Hunter DLC set to release in June, but after seeing the trailer and the general direction that series has been heading in, I lost most of my enthusiasm. So its Elden Ring and the omnipresent Amiga or old DOS RPGs for the time being.

I haven't fully explored the underground stuff. Most of it. I got through the lake of rot to the checkpoint earlier today but was over it and went to do something else. I've done the rest I think. I do use incantations a lot, probably about 80% melee 20% incantations. If I have space to cast I'll cast, unless the enemy is no threat at all. I use lightning spear (charged if I've got time, quickly spammed if not). I like to kill those stupid dragonflies with that. Black flame fireball can be good for hitting things that are below or above me. The flame of frenzy has won all the dragon fights for me so far, except the one that does the red lightning. I don't know how I'll beat that. I'll be back for it later I guess.

But for most dragons, including the rot dragon, I just ride my horse diagonally towards them, avoiding their breath, then face their ass, off to the side a bit, and cast that spell. It hits for good damage and it often staggers enemies. I often use that one as a sneak attack too. It's too slow for use in combat. There's also Golden Vow which I sometimes remember to use, flame cleanse me, order healing and the basic low level heal spell (urgent heal?) that is good for topping off my health bar without wasting a flask. I swap them out as needed, I don't like to have more than 4 equipped as it's too slow to scroll between them. I don't know what Flame Grant Me Strength actually does. When I cast it the numbers on my character sheet don't change at all. Apparently it "Stacks multiplicatively" with Golden Vow, but without knowing what it does I just leave it.

I've played my class a lot as a caster, summoning Banished Knight Oleg (who I've just levelled to 10) and then hanging back to either spam spells or blast with Sacred Blade from my morningstar. I don't do honorable duels if I can help it. If I can kill a Crucible Knight by vomiting flames on his back, running away and hiding, then doing it again I'd prefer that over fighting the bastard. If I can't use magic I'll try to guard counter, backstab or spam an ability that does big damage and stagger like giant hunt, square off or lion's claw. I also have a light crossbow as a left hand secondary that I use to kite enemies out of groups and kill them one at a time, and if I can't easily kill an overworld boss I'll figure out where he disappears and resets back to idle and use that to take breaks to heal and rebuff during the fight.

So far as weapons go, I just got a dope new one that should keep me happy until I finish my casting build. I used one of my numerous larval tears to put 2 points into dex and 4 more into STR to qualify me for a knight's greatsword, levelled it to +12 and chucked the giant hunt enchant on it with the flame art affinity. That move is fast, has range, good damage and a manageable FP cost. Not to mention it knocks down humanoid enemies. I love it.

Still, I'm a bit pissed of at how many more weapons have INT scaling than FTH. I console myself that certain aspects of the game which give pause to other classes are trivialized for me though. Like scarlet rot and death birds. Sacred blade melts the health bars on death birds. They're trash mobs to me but I've seen others complaining about them. I'll keep this save close to what I started him as, a cleric/paladin archetype. But my next playthrough is going to be INT or ARC with DEX. So many more options for weapons, even big weapons.

I'll probably leave STR and DEX where they are now, and finish my FTH so I can grab a few ranks of arcane and try the dragon spells. I want the rot breath one, and that's only 3 points of arcane so why not? Once that's done, if there's still enough game left I'll level FTH to 60 then start working physical stats. I have a colossal sword called "greatsword" that I'll make flame art and put something broken on it. It needs 31 STR, so I'd need quite a bit more endurance given that I've had to take my helm off just to wield my knight's greatsword. I'd also like a tower shield but I think that would definitely have to be NG+.

Remember, that if you have not been playing this game blindfolded and with a concussion from a hammer blow to the head, you have been playing it wrong and should start over :martini:

The Pest Threads incantation is extremely valuable against large bosses that can be hit with many threads, although it has fairly short range and to maximize the number of threads that hit it's best to be alongside or, even better, underneath the enemy.

How is magic in this game? I saw some videos on youtube that make it look quite satisfying. Is there any control magic and mobility magic, or is it all just blasting?

Flame Grant me Strenght gives you both a +20% to physical damage AND a +20% to fire damage for 30 seconds to ALL your attacks (both weapons and spells), which makes it really good for either flame art infused weapons or for the many faith weapons that natively have fire damage on them.
Just in case you don't know, the fact that it stacks multiplicately (as do all buffs in Souls games I believe) means that Golden Vow + Flame doesn't give you a total of 1+0.15+0.20=1.35 of your base damage, but rather 1*1.15*1.20=1.38 of base damage. It might not look like that big of a difference, but when you also add the cracked tear for fire damage (+20%) and the fire scorpion charm (+12%) then suddenly your fire damage (all fire damage, so both your flame of frenzy/black flame and the fire damage of a sword will benefit) ends up looking like 1.38*1.2*1.12=1.85 of base damage. Also add the Faithful talisman (+4%) and you've now almost doubled the damage (1.93 of base) of your black flame and flame of frenzy.
(had it been additive we'd be looking at only 1.71 of base damage with the same buffs)
If you really want to murder something fast then you could also add the buff from the jelly shield weapon art that adds a flat 20% to all your damage output (for a total of 2.3 of base damage) and the Ritual Sword Talisman for an extra 10% when at full health, so we're ending up at 2.5.

Let's say your Black Flame was hitting for 700 dmg, now it's hitting for 1750 dmg. And you could even buff this further by using Godfrey's icon that buffs charged spells.

You can do the same shenanigans with all your damage types (so also applies to holy and lightning effects) as there is a Cracked Tears and a Scorpion Charm for all of the elemental damage types, except there's no equivalent to Flame Grant me Strenght for the other types.

EDIT: Forgot to also add the Godslayer's Seal for +10%, so we're at 2.75 of base damage, or 1925 for our example Black Flame.

Point being, by combining talismans, flask of wondrous physick and spell buff you can stack damage through the roof.

There's more variety in magic than in other Souls likes I'd say, but not so much so that it's unrecognizable. Some spells have control elements by staggering or knocking down their targets, proccing a status effect like freeze (can also be done through weapons) will trigger a stagger effect as well as whatever the status does - freeze impairs stamina regeneration and causes a defense debuff on the target, etc. There are also the usual stealth spells (move quietly, become more or less invisible, etc.), darkness spell to hide what you're doing, spells that cause projectiles except they don't necessarily come from you which can cause issues for people or computer enemies trying to dodge them.

So basically... yes, but it all still revolves around combat since it's an action RPG or a few utilities like in prior Soulslikes.

Thanks for the information; so for instance, it could be useful against bosses like the Ulcerated (or Putrid) Tree Spirits, Astel, most dragons, Fallingstar Beast, Magma Wyrms, Erdtree Avatars &c assuming no immunity? Perhaps even the Fire Giant? I am curious to try out more of the incantations, I just seem to forget about them when I'm engaging a boss or group of enemies, again with the exception of maybe a Lightning Spear once in a while. Golden Vow, Flame, Grant Me Strength, and a Wonderous Physic with the Opaline Bubbletear and the Thorny Cracked Tear were my default go-to pre-battle preparations for most of the end game serious bosses, but once the battle begins I become completely fixated on the melee dance up close and personal, and tend to roll into attacks or jump over them to stick right on the opponent, with certain exceptions of course. Yet I have all of the memory stones and the talisman that gives you another two memorization slots, and at all times have the basic 10 slots filled. My usual loadout is, in order:

1. Golden Vow
2. Flame, Grant Me Strength
3. Flame, Cleanse Me
4. Lightning Spear
5. Frozen Lightnin Spear
6. Ancient Dragons Lightning Spear
7. Black Flame
8. Stone of Gurranq
9. Flame, Fall Upon Them
10. Ekzyke's Decay

But I end up only regularly using the first two for bosses, then either rest it, or let it rest on the third one or the fourth one, depending on whether I need to heal environmental hazards from consuming my health or the utility of hitting things that are out of reach without having to equip a ranged weapon. Flame, Fall Upon Them is actually a surprisingly good incantation I've found, or at least for my character it is. I was able to kill the Malformed Star that you can come upon in either the Altus Tunnel or the Perfumer's Grotto from the Grotto with it, and it only took 3 casts to the head to die. I initially came up on that Malformed Star from the Tunnel and didn't have enough FP to take care of it at the time, nor did I have any upgraded ranged weapons at that time, so I ignored it and only came back later to explore the Grotto when I discovered that you can get much closer to it from that side. I probably could have hit its head with my greatswords but it looked precarious to me, because if I locked on to it and it moved its head while I was jumping, I'd either miss or plunge to my death off that narrow root you can cross over. So I charged up three Flame, Fall Upon Thems and hit his head with the main fireball on each cast with the lesser fireballs hitting his body and arms, and he died so easily.

For a long time and before I'd gotten some of those spells that I listed as my basic loadout, I kept Pest Threads in the regular rotation, along with several Bestial incants because I use the Claw Seal. I wish that Black Flame's Protection stacked with Flame, Grant Me Strength but I've read that it doesn't. It stacks with Golden Vow though, which is nice if you are looking to maximize your physical damage negation, but it reduces the potency of healing incants and flasks by 20%.

By the way, this is just an aside as irrelevant to the matter, but didn't anybody really like the Cave of the Forlorn in the Consecrated Snowfields? Its the one with the Misbegotten everywhere where you get the Golden Order Greatsword from the Misbegotten Crusader. At that point in the game I thought there was not going to be any more unique sublocations; I'd figured that all of the ruins, caves, graves, &c where going to share the same rough layout and appearance as the many we'd seen before, but lo and behold when you walk in there and almost every detail of the cave is entirely unique, or at least as far as I'm aware and I'm fairly certain I've been to every sublocation in the game. When I saw that you could see down through the "floor" through the ice I was so excited, and then when I saw the faint red glow emanating from the red jellyfish beneath my characters feet I was ecstatic. It was, and by far, the most gorgeous area in the entire game for me, and I lament that it wasn't much larger. The fact that it is the only location that has these unique aspects makes me appreciate it so much more than I would otherwise, but it was a relatively brief romp to the boss. But my God was it stunning to behold. I wish it were a minor legacy dungeon at least, one that was largely vertical so that you could see through multiple layers of the ice with different colored lights radiating through and it got more demented and scary the further you descend, like when you first enter the meteor impact site and marvel at the changing environment as it turns from gaping hole to waterfall, to storied gothic architecture alcoves, to urban sprawl like a mile below the ground.

Pest Threads deals physical damage, so there’s not going to be any immunity against it.

The woes of being a world boss. Have you had one just sitting in front of the boss to wait for you to get close?
